Title: Your favourite movie clips on YouTube
Post by: JK on January 07, 2019, 05:55:31 AM
I'd say keep 'em short--no longer than, say, ten minutes. This is one I come back to again and again, the joyous party scene from the 2013 filming of The Great Gatsby:

Great idea!

Here's one of my favourite moments in a film. The video is good quality except for the sounds of someone turning up the volume in the first fifteen seconds:

I thought this was such a great adaptation of the book. It brought the vivid color (and the dark moments) of the novel to life. This is a great one to own on Blu Ray, btw.

This scene from the Spielberg film 'Empire of the Sun' is one of the most touching moments in cinema I've ever seen:

Set in a Japanese run Prison camp in WWII, this specific scene shows that humanity at their core, even two opposing sides at war, can appreciate a unified love of something otherworldly (in this case: flying). This movie is full of these little moments. Definitely a desert island film for me.

"Police Academy" franchise (& the greatest!):

1. Blanks & Copeland haircut scene, any scene with Hooks, Capt. Harris/ Proctor, "Blue Oyster" club scene, Fackler riding his car with his wife in house robe & hair curlers on car's hood.
2. Mauser/ Proctor, "Blue Oyster", Zed & the gang shoplifting, Mahoney disguised as bandit, Pete Lassard getting graffitied by Zed's gang, Schtulman's house, Jones making real helicopter noises by mouth, Tackleberry's girlfriend's Kirkland fam & his face witnessing his crazy future in-laws.
3. Entire chase scene near the end, Fackler's wife getting into his car & he driving with her...outside on hood (the 1st segment's vice versa scenario), Kirkland-Jr. hilarious boxing match, Zed/ Sweetchuck "Psycho" shower parody, karate lesson with Sweetchuck's tenny flying into Zed's mouth  :-D, the police car driving exam ft. Zed/Hooks, Jones/ Adams, Proctor/ Mauser, the rich guy in limo going to assign to the police academy, then asking Hightower, African strongest tallest officer, to carry his bags ("Hey porter" :-D), each Zed/ Sweetchuck (fight/ feud) scene, return of Blanks & Copeland, "Blue Oyster".

How about a little drama, a little humor and a little music -

This scene is from my third favorite film and I think it’s my favorite movie scene ever, with my favorite actress too:

Though the film it comes from is a talkie, this scene is a brilliant exercise in silent comedy:

I love classic musicals. Here is the queen of musicals, the greatest entertainer ever, doing what she did best:

I watched 2001: A Space Odyssey two nights ago on TV. The entire film is awesome beyond belief (I may just rate A Clockwork Orange a little higher) but the "Star Gate" sequence floors me every time, particularly when the diamond shapes loom into view. ::)

While Ferris Bueller's Day Off was a comedy, there was one particularly poignant scene that has stuck with me.

It can be found at "Ferris Bueller Museum Scene." The scene starts with a bit of a chuckle perhaps, while showing some of  my favorite paintings, and sculptures .
Then Cameron looks at a particular painting...

Says Director John Hughes:
"The closer he looks at the child, the less he sees. But the more he looks at it, there's nothing there. I think he fears that the more you look at him the less you see. There isn't anybody there. That's him."

Edit: Except maybe "Twist & Shout"/ Beatles lipsync scene & everybody dances in the Ferris film.

I identify with that scene because I've had feelings such as that earlier in my life, and to tell the truth, every once in a while even now.
But I too enjoy the parade sequence.

In my opinion (and I know I'm not alone in this), Lawrence of Arabia is one of the best films ever made, if not the very best. It's full of stunning scenes, including this hilarious run-in with an echo: "You can rumpty tumpty tumpty tum!" ;D

"Lawrence" was on TV last night. I caught only the last third of it. It's hard watching it on my tiny TV.
It will be shown again on the Big Screen later this year in the US for a couple of days and I am looking forward to seeing it for the umpteenth time.

That was a funny scene. Another funny scene is when he dons the Arab robes for the first time then flits about on the desert sands but (oops) stops when he sees Anthony Quinn's character and son looking quizzingly at him.

Too many to list in "Rebecca" mini-series with Jeremy Brett. Beautiful picturesque poetic yet with freaky images adaptation.

Lucky you. I don't think I've seen it on the big screen since '63 or '64 or whenever I saw it first. I bought the OST a couple of years later as I loved the music. I'd really love to see it again in the cinema. One day...

Some significant scenes were cut from the version shown in the 60s. At least some were restored in the 90s when I first saw it.
One scene that was restored helped to explain part of the reason why Lawrence went along with the "no prisoners" shouts . The restored scene saw Lawrence coming upon a bunch of civilians the Turks had killed .
Anyway the process of restoration is interesting. In some cases the audio had been lost. Peter O'Toole had to redo those lines. Then they had to make his voice sound like it did back then (as it had been filmed 30 years previously).

Fascinating! The omission of the massacre of villagers sounds familiar. It was definitely there the first time I saw Lawrence in London. Yes, that must have been perplexing for those who hadn't seen the uncut film.

Actually this is from a TV show (as the OP I can takes liberties with my topic). Sherlock has to be one of the most magnificent detective series ever televised. And this excerpt doesn't even include the man himself! Andrew Scott almost steals the show from Benedict Cumberbatch with his hilariously ghoulish take on criminal mastermind Jim Moriarty. (The man asking us to subscribe is series co-creator Mark Gatiss, who also plays Sherlock's elder brother Mycroft.)

Jeremy Brett = the best Sherlock. List'll be:

1. Jeremy Brett (Benedict knew, there's vid with him talking about Jeremy's Sherlock characterization & just Jeremy generally)

2. Vasily Livanov (USSR)

3. Ronald Howard (Leslie Howard's son)
4. Robert Downey-Jr.

Yes indeed. I liked GWH too but LIT has a sort of a personal thing mixed in. But I love it anyway. ;) The interplay between those two! ::) What I do find odd though is that the "Matthew's Best Hit TV Show" episode is drastically cut on my DVD and in the version I saw recently. It was in there complete (bar some cosmetic work) the first time I saw LIT in the cinema when it was first released. Luckily it's here:

Not sure about visiting Japan though--it's a l-o-n-g flight from NL! (A saxophonist colleague moved to Fukuoka five years ago.)

Oh, and I gave the OST a listen last night--one of the best film soundtracks ever:

"Breakfast At Tiffany's":
- Holly's flat party. She sees 2 guys, points at single guy with lit eyes, Paul her new friend says well yes, he's tall, handsome (zoom in Brazilian guy) but she says meant the other guy (zoom in short nerdy plump guy with glasses in stupid haircut), to which Paul shocked "The...other one?". That face he made questioning Holly's taste in guys. Makes me laugh.
- Doc Golightly, Holly's father figure-like husband gets to city to get Holly back to ranch, fam, daughters. Says it to Paul, the guy amazed "Daughters?" Doc retrieves fam pic - Holly, brother Fred, husband Doc, 4 girls. Paul, again, shocked "She's got 4 children??". Funny face, yet again. He didn't expect thin socialite to be mother 4 times! Thankfully, Doc explains with lil quick chuckle "Now, I didn't say it's her biological children. Their mother was great woman..." etc.

I love this thread.  ;D Here are a few of my favorites:

1. Here's a scene from the movie Compulsion where Orson Welles is arguing against putting two young men to death for murder. This is a bit of a long sequence, but it must been seen from beginning to end. This scene is brilliant from start to end. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrjbL4eedkQ

2. This might be the most moving scene in all of cinema, from the great Chaplin. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibVpDhW6kDQ

3.Here's a scene from Inherit The Wind. I had never heard of this movie before, but after watching this and a few other clips on YouTube, I want very much to see the whole film. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMxFOA85A3w

Today (October 15) was the anniversary of the world premiere of The Great Dictator in 1940.
 I love Chaplin's films.
This past year there have been showings of his silent films accompanied by an orchestra.
They had pretty much all been in Europe, but now I'm getting some announcement s of showings in the US, including one in North Carolina in a couple of weeks. I'd love to see Chaplin on the Big screen again - last time was over 30 years ago at a Chaplin festival in Houston.

I hope you manage to get to see them this time round.

We saw a whole bunch of Chaplin flims in the cinema in the '70s--not sure if it was a festival. Every one a beauty.

Many scenes from his films are heart-rending but this one from Modern Times nearly brought about my demise (I nearly choked with laughter) when I first saw it in 1975:

Love that mouth wiping gizmo, and Chaplin's facial expressions when it's used.  ;D

I recall that in the early/mid 1970s, all of Chaplin's features were released in the US. Other than The Gold Rush (which by the mistake of not renewing the copyright passed into public domain ), the other features had been pulled out of circulation when Chaplin went into exile in Switzerland in the early 1950s. Interestingly, since the movie Limelight had not been shown in Los Angeles upon its release in 1952, it became eligible for the Oscars when it finally was shown in the early '70s. Its  theme song which I remember hearing on the radio back then, was nominated for an Oscar.
I didn't see the films at that time but my older sister did. And I remember seeing the movie posters when they came out and thought they were cool (still do).

This scene from The Longest Day has always amused me (it begins nine seconds in). Although a gripping film, it is far too pro-American for my liking, the Brits being made to look like helpless clowns.

NB: Don't look for just Gummipuppen at YouTube or you'll get stuff that has precious little bearing on WWII.  :lol

Yesterday my attention was drawn to this heart-warming song from Oliver & Company:

Riveting dance scene in "I Love Lucy", the best dance. Lucy's at her best & coolest. :3d She didn't skip beats, she went in to stage with cool cheeky attitude, chewing gum to boot. Seeing it, I start reckoning it's billion times better than "Mask" dance/singing. Desi's got jolly nice singing voice/good dancer. But, Lucy's got what it takes here :3d:

Sweet!
Thought I had seen all of the older I Love Lucy shows but must have missed this one.
Thanks!

Bet back in day you could easily repeat Lucy's moves. :3d You did tell that you used to be dancer, IIRC you danced various styles.

Here's really cool dance that Lucy did, it looks really modern, everybody says it in youtube, I agree, & everybody says it's the best version of the song:

You don't need to be stoned to appreciate the beauty of Lucy's moves, but from direct experience the experience is enhanced. She really was a genius despite her deterioration of skills in her later years. Wow!

Funny clip with Lucy, Ethel, Fred, they ruined Desi's "singing with guitar" footage by adding their cowboy clips & kid footage. Result - mishmash, moving-speaking-singing backwards, singing as Chipmunks, really cool given it's 1950s:

Another very funny one. Thanks.
I wouldn’t call myself a dancer. In my group I was a singer and occasional musician. I might have to do a bit of choreography as part of the song. In a handful of times over the 20 years I did have to actually dance. The dancers in the group spent a lot more hours every week rehearsing together, plus some took extra classes (mainly ballet).
