The past 12 months have definitely been a treasure trove for Beach Boys fans -- with a new studio album, a couple of new live DVD's, and two new albums set for the next few months. The industry release sheet Musictap.net posted that on May 21st, the band will issue its sixth live collection, Live - The 50th Anniversary Tour -- with the band's long-awaited deep cut box set Made In California set for August 27th.

Ahhhhhh, WMMR is one of the few good rock stations left in the Philadelphia area. Pierre Robert is a HUGE fan of the band, especially Brian.

Except for release date change, it's the exact same wording from 2012.

Because I believe the more announcements, the better...certainly this one is better for someone who doesn't know that "MIC" stands for "Made In California", and also better because it has the supposed release date right there in the topic line.  Someone with limited time, doing a quick scan of the topics, can quickly find it. 

I have an idea folks!  If I could get another three of these made, connect 'em in pairs with big sticks and fasten some sort of gurney across 'em, I might be on to something!

I know - I just felt like expressing my considerable amazement that someone couldn't differentiate between a 2CD live set and a 6CD box with a different title and release date.

I for one had given up on reading those other posts, they were just going round and round in circles, and seeing your new post was the first thing to alert me to the official MIC release date, so thanks! 2013 is turning out to be another great year for the Beach Boys or should I say fans of the Beach Boys. Live CD set and  MIC box set on the way!

I'd rather see the five touring together but what can you do.

If there were a new studio album coming out this year I think it would be too much Beach Boy product at one time.

Maybe we WILL get a new studio album in 2014.

I'm trying to figure out why you don't chime in more when I or one of the other Philly-area fans start talking Philly radio and the BB's.  :)  There have been several in the past two years.

One of the best was 94 WYSP in the 80's and early 90's. The late and much-missed Ed Sciaky had a show Sunday nights called "The Sunday Night Alternative" where he'd spin BB's, and a watershed moment for me and Philly radio was when he spun the Smile tracks as soon as they became official on the box set in an uninterrupted block of every Smile-related track on the box. Who does that anymore?

If Ed and his free-form Sunday show were still around, I know he's do the same when the new box set comes out.

WYSP also played - uninterrupted and commercial free - entire CD's when classic albums were coming out on disc for the first time. They spun Pet Sounds, the Concert/Live In London 2-fer, and other BB's albums which was great for me as I saved my money to buy the actual discs but could have a cassette to play in the meantime.

Another 'YSP treat was a wild free-form show, playlists be damned, called "The Ricky Mess" with DJ Rick Allen, who worked the overnight shift. He'd spin anything, including BB's deep cuts and Monkees. Very cool.

Hard to believe but I still have a bias against 'MMR going back to when Stern declared war on DeBella and his Morning Zoo on 'MMR, and I never listened beyond that although DeBella redeemed himself and Pierre Robert is a very knowledgeable and cool music guy all-around.

For Philly radio now, related to BB's, check 88.5 WXPN, especially the show "Many Moods Of Ben Vaughn", which airs Saturdays at 5 and is also streamed online as a podcast, I believe. Every few weeks he pulls out a late 60's BB's track or several, and I think the Friends-20/20 era may be his favorite because most of what he plays comes from those albums. The regular hosts especially on weekends and request shows throw in some deep BB's tracks every so often, and that's where I first heard That's Why God Made The Radio on the radio.

If Pierre does do something special for the box set, keep us posted, I'll definitely tune in. It would be great to have had Ed Sciaky on the Philly airwaves as all of the incredible releases of the past few years have been coming out, I know he'd be playing the Smile box for sure, as he would the upcoming set.

I was a teenager in the Philadelphia area in the early 70s.  I remember that "Feel Flows" and other songs from "Surf's Up" were on heavy rotation on WMMR at the time.  I give them credit for permanently ensconcing the Beach Boys as cool within my own consciousness.

The station went from "underground radio" to a more heavy metal/mainstream rock format within several years, but left some room for the aesthetic judgment of the djs -- in the 80s Michael Tearson told me the station was a benevolent dictatorship.  Glad to see that the stations still has some aesthetic credibility.

WMMR used to be - like Boston's WBCN in the 70's - a powerhouse of an FM station, living up to it's rock and free-form cred. But in the 80's I could hardly listen - it was bordering on parody and something of a farce, where they'd have parades of Philly executive types parading down the street in Hawaiian shirts singing "Louie Louie" and other such nonsense that had nothing to do with playing good records. All of that "Morning Zoo" stuff was hard to take, which is why I'm still a little biased against them. A great, rocking FM station was turned into mush in the 80's.

After Stern and 'YSP decimated those Zookeepers over at 93.3 (not just morning drive but all day and night in the ratings), and took all their ratings in a matter of a few years, WMMR tried switching to one of the most well-documented failures in recent radio history, doing a format called "Rock And Jock" radio, where they'd have amped-up jock talkers and sports guys like Howard Eskin talking about the fucking Flyers games in between playing lame metal records. Colossal flop and embarrassment. Soon to be followed by a switch to almost all metal music, then "classic metal", then "classic hard rock"...I don't know how a true music lover like Pierre Robert hung around, but it's good he did.

If they're on somewhat of a steadier ground format-wise, and not playing Scorpions records as "classic metal", I'll give them another try.  :)

But for sure, they were one of the best rock stations in the country in the 70's, no doubt.

Alan removed himself from the project last year, but in November he told me Mike had persuaded him to return to it.

I know Mr. Boyd had some health issues but  it's wonderful to know he is feeling well enough to helm this project.

Wild assumptions or do folk know that Boyd left due to interference by Mike or anyone else? Do we even know he was involved for the outset?

I assumed from that news that Boyd was invited on to the project by Mike who, as a shrewd business guy, saw the success of TSS and invited Boyd on to this project in the hope that his expertise and dedication and previous record and the way he seems to work so well with Mark Linett would help steer this project to similar success.

But admittedly that's just my own assumption.

PongHit, who knows Alan, says Alan left the project and Mike got him to come back. Not Mike had invited him  onto the projecy in the first place, "Alan removed himself from the project last year, but in November he told me Mike had persuaded him to return to it."

Seemed quite weird to me when I heard the Beach Boys Archivist wasn't involved in their career spanning, 6 CD boxset. Seems Alan is quite the gentleman and wouldn't speak ill of a band member. Would not surprise me that a band member  or representative made Alan leave the project in the first place.

Knowing Alan's love for WIBNTLA, I am 100% sure it will be on the box.

If you can remember, how much of the stuff that you heard do you think could be 'releasable' on the box set? Obviously it's just speculation but did most of it seem like stuff that wouldn't have been out of place on the 1993 box set for example?

I'd say most of it is releasable — but rather than the '93 box, I'd say some of the material wouldn't be out of place on HAWTHORNE.

I don't have any inside info, as such, but remember that working on Beach Boys stuff is not all just sitting around listening to unreleased stuff, as you know.  It's really quite a lot of work, and Alan and Mark have often put aside their personal projects to do Beach Boys stuff.  I mean, it's an incredible testament to how much they love the music.  Mark probably has had to turn down interesting engineering gigs, and Alan has all kinds of fantastic film-related projects in development, and of course is such a talented musician in his own right.  One of these days our beloved box-set producer maestri are going to get to sit back on a beach somewhere and get to pursue their other interests, no holds barred.

Several years ago, adamghost made a few posts about some of the recordings that Alan Boyd had on his Ipod(I believe it was an Ipod). From the little that I can recall, adamghost listed some songs that were a treasure trove of recordings from the KTSA sessions/era. Perhaps if adamghost sees this post he might be willing to share any details or song titles. Or perhaps I may have unwittingly just put Adam and Alan in some hot water...I hope not.   :-X

You should do as the British participants in 'Have I Got News For You' do: the editor of satirical mag Private Eye, Ian Hislop, gets away with everything under the sun, by inserting 'allegedly' frequently in his statements, where these are of a politically sensitive or explosive nature.

Or start such references to past events with: 'yesterday I overheard the following in a bar'.

MArk Dillon refers to some KTSA tracks in his "50 Shades of Beach Boys" book. Only passing mentions, in the chapter in which Randy Bachman talks about the track KTSA and just how good the Beach Boys woulda been if he'd been allowed to join.  Me too…

The only unreleased KTSA/1979 tracks I remember from Alan's house were "Why Didn't I Tell You?," and "Little Girl (Sunshine)," which had a note: "rough mix with scratch vocal."

Did the version of "Why Didn't I Tell You" you listened to have lyrics PongHit?

The booted version of "Why Didn't I Tell You" is practically an instrumental "Goin' On" but instead of the vocal intro/reprise you have CRAZY drum solos, completely out of time and place. I think the bass line is a bit different, but nothing too major, it walks up for 2 bars where "Goin' On" goes down, I recall the synth is a little louder too. If you synced the two tracks you'd probably have a slightly better "Goin' On" (though you'd have to remove those really out of place drum solos, I can't imagine where Brian was going with that, it sounds as if the track is having a seizure)

Been a fan since age 9, starting becoming friends with the band at age 18, but oddly have never owned an Energy Dome.

I'm not sure why you think Mike having a writing credit would make any difference? There are dozens and dozens of unreleased Mike Love songs in the vaults (many substandard of course) and he has never pushed for any to be included on a rarities collection as far as I know. There probably should be about 15-20 songs on MIC with a Mike writing credit that weren't on the 1993 box set anyway...

Just figured he'd push for his work to be included.  Not a big deal.  Royalties.

Is "Won't You Tell Me" really a Beach Boys recording?  I think it's from 1969.

Eh, but then they have some weird aversion to Blondie and Ricky, even though they were so cool and looked to have fitted in sweetly with the new era 72 Beach Boys. They were probably the best thing to have happened to them at that point, tbh. But no, you won't hear from them during the C50 thing because they weren't founding members, which I respect, but I'll get back to my petition.

Ricky Fataar is still playing with Bonnie Raitt's band, which he has been doing for a very long time.  The band is phenomenal...Mike Finnigan on keys and Bonnie on Guitar....killer band. Watch their Austin City Limits set if you can find it.

I understand what you mean about Mike but I think the image of him scheming ways to include his songs (and omit Dennis's) is a myth. All of the rarities albums that have been released have included a lot of Dennis's stuff and very little of Mike's.

I would have thought the new box would include songs like Hawaii, Let Him Run Wild, Kiss Me Baby, All I Wanna Do, Big Sur (early version), It's A Beautiful Day, Somewhere Near Japan etc. and a lot more that weren't on the 1993 box. If you add on all of the classic songs that Mike has a writing credit for then I don't think he is going to have much cause for concern.

I have heard that the Ed Carter song, "Surfer Suzie" is really good.  I have never heard it, but AGD's website shows it with a lead by Al.

Far more interesting: Unreleased songs which stand a chance of appearing on the box, but which you'd rather remained in the vaults... And lets just stick to songs that might realistically make the cut (so, you know, not the alternate Hey Little Tomboy).

For me it's 'Everybody's Got To Live', which i know some people love, but which i really can't stand. Why? Well, the song itself is pretty lame, and Carl's vocal is horrible, but it's the lyrics that really get to me:

Yeah, ok, so a pretty wacky opening line. Maybe it's going to be one of Brian's Love You-style quirky lyrics, wherein it should be bad but yet somehow it's great.

As i say, i usually love Brian's goofy lyrics (I could happily spent an entire evening listening to Solar System - in fact, i just might) but the lyrics to EGTL aren't goofy or fun - they're just nonsense. Psychotherapy codswollap. Crap, basically. I know the song isn't credited to Landy, but to me these lyrics have his influence all over them.

So yeah. I hope Everybody's Got To Live ain't on MIC. Any other suggestions?

Except Mike's duet on Do You Hear What I hear with Mary McGregor.

A part of me is like burn it with fire.

But then another part of me is saying if Mike enjoys singing songs like that then more power to him.

Here's another song which I would think realistically has a chance to make it: "Living Doll" which was released in 1987, and credited to The Beach Boys, although only Brian appears on it. And it's cowritten by Gene Landy and Alexandra Morgan. Yeahhhh.

However, it is an official release credited to The Beach Boys. And if they are considering some of the other '80s crap, I assume this deserves a thought as well.

I'd never heard of that one before and after a quick trip to youtube I wish I never had.

It is possible but I personally think it is worse than most of the, 'other '80s crap' as you put it. Poor production, vocals and lyrics.

Certainly weaker than Getcha Back, Where I Belong, Rock and Roll to the Rescue, California Dreaming, Kokomo, Somewhere Near Japan etc.

I know when The Beach Boys will agree to the release of the "Made in California" box set. They'll release the box set when nobody cares anymore, just like Crosby,Stills,Nash & Young and their box set of 1974 tour recordings(now postponed until 2014, after months of hype). These two dysfunctional bands have no credibility any more, since archival projects are announced, then, usually, they never materialize. For both groups, their interpersonal feuds mean more to them than the continued loyalty of their fans.

Only Mike Love solo song that'll make the cut is "Rockin' the Man in the Boat".

Yeah, that's why I haven't given them my money.  Both of those "Beach Boys 50" video releases smell of what we used to call in the TV world - "promos" or "specials."  A short, slapped together advertisement shown shortly before a release to build excitement and eventually included as "bonus material" on a more substantial video release forth-coming. 

There really should be a "Made In California: Live" -- a corresponding video box set, that would include a lot more (full length) concert footage (old and new), a two-part (2 disc) updated, in-depth documentary and bunch of great TV appearance/specials over the years, etc. etc.  Brain is Back!  You name it.  The whole deal.

I think I'm the only person on this forum who doesn't care about The Beach Boys as a live band except for the early-to-mid-1970s when they were actually very good, and maybe the more interesting late-'60s efforts like the Hawaii concerts.

Me too, pretty much.  Although, I'd extend it to the late 70s - early 80s.  For me -- personally, damn... the years on the DC mall on the 4th of July is pure, manic Beach Boys heaven.  Short shorts, slightly cleaned-up beards, Denny muscling out some primal butt-smashing drum beats -- Brian getting into it, looking thinner -- Carl in Charge -- Al's happy, Bruce is happy and Mike Love in his trucker hat glory...

F-Yeah!!!  That's some good sh-t right there, I'm tellin' you boy!  woooooooo-weeeee!!!

Well, I've never heard Love You-era live recordings so I can't speak to those. Were they as amazingly demented as I hope?

I suppose this may well be a fool's errand, but I'm curious (and though I love the 'Boys, as more of a Beatlefan, I'm less qualified than almost anyone here to offer an educated guess).

As far as I know, the only place you'll find "Do It Again", the 2012 studio version.

We don't know that yet. If that were the case, it would have come out last year. I'm guesing there  is a reason it's taking so long.

Since we still have no news on the box, I was wondering what everyone's feelings are on the song "Almost Summer". I personally think it should be one of the tracks in the set because it was written by three Beach Boys (Brian, Mike, and Al) and features Mike on lead vocals, and what sounds like Brian on falsetto. And it was a top 40 hit. And its basically a Beach Boys song in everything but name. And most importantly, its pretty rare and not available very easily these days. I think the only CD release was on some random various artists comp from the '90s. and it's not on iTunes.

I'd like a decent copy of it. It's better than at least half of MIU.

I would guess that they might not be able to include the Celebration version due to contractual issues. Could be wrong though.

I think there is a demo version that The BBs did though. Or they could include the live rendition along with Cruisin' if they are of good enough quality.

Who is the "we" you are referring to in "We don't know that yet"?  Made in Calif didn't come out last year because the audio wasn't finalized and completed until a little over two months ago.  The Thirty Years of the BB's box was released twenty years ago in June for the summer season, but this one is scheduled for late Aug because that's a great time to release a box set for the forthcoming Christmas Holiday Season.

We as us on the board. (though some on the board d know). Where do you get the 1/3, 2/3s thing?  That isn't conformed unless you'd care to share your insider info.

I would love to share your hopes... but I doubt it. I think the box will be aimed at a general market, people who don't have the two-fers, nor the PSS, TSS, or the GV box set. So the MiC one will present a coherent and comprehensive overview of the totality of the band's career. With all the  (over)familiar hits, with top notch live material from all phases, and with some (with emphasis: some) rarities. Your dream about 50% 'new' is, I fear, a pipedream (and mind: I say this with the utmost respect for you, because I share your wish, of course).

Which means the next set will be for those people who don't have the two-fers, nor the PSS, TSS, GV box set or the MiC box set.

Then they also mustn't have Sounds of Summer, Endless Summer, 20 Golden Greats, Icon, 50 Lashings of Sunstroke, UPF50+, or any of those other summery Best of… Greatest Hits etc etc.  I mean, what's the point trying to force feed them the hits any longer if they haven't already got them?

Where will we end up if that scenario goes on endlessly? Eventually, in 2063, there'll be a box set with nothing but the original 45rpm mono mix of Good Vibrations, like 200 times, for those who don't have that.  And those people, God bless 'em, would probably rather have a handful of grain and 100ml of clean water.

My hope is for a thick set of deep and previously unreleased. If they need to represent the hits, then let it be by using new-to-our-ears live versions, alt versions, rare mixes, new stereo mixes. But no more same-old same-old… pretty please…

The guys in charge of this must be as frustrated as the rest of us by having to retread the same old hits packages. 50 Big Ones is for those who need hits.  MiC is for the fans.

It has been intimated in the past that the 6th disc might be reserved for vocal only versions/instrumental versions etc. For the box set to be 50% 'new' that would mean that the other 5 discs would have to have around 60 obscurities which I can't really see. Especially as there can't be that much from the 60s that remains unreleased.

I'm hopeful that from the 70s to the present day we should get quite a few uncollated things though.

I never saw the appeal of the vocal only versions/instrumental versions. I think they take up space that would be better served by live recordings, or songs we haven't heard. I suppose it's fun to hear once, but I propose that would better served as a themed project of its own. 

Agreed. I like that stuff, actually, but much prefer outtakes...Amazing, how many good outtakes they have.

That's my point, they have stuff in the vaults that is wonderful, a whole host of unknown titles, plus some truly stunning live recordings through 1975 all sitting on the shelf. If none of this existed I think I would welcome these mixes. What they are is OK I suppose, but I feel I learn more listening to a finished recording (even an alt take) as far as how Brian or the others made their records.   I always just resented the space they took up because of what I know to be sitting on a shelf.

I can see both sides of the coin.  On one hand box sets are by their very nature aimed towards the collector's market.  There aren't a great deal of consumers who are going to plunk down the amount of coin necessary to purchase a 6-CD box set when they have the alternative available to them of a two disc greatest hits set.  However, it has already been noted that this is going to be a career spanning set so I think they are going to need to include first and foremost, most (if not all) of the tracks that would be included on a standard greatest hits package.  Then they will have to devote another 15-25% of the space on the box set to more obscure material such as album tracks that are either popular amongst the more hardcore fanbase or more than likely just songs that the band themselves like.  Remember it has been stated in the past that Brian Wilson requested that "Let Him Run Wild" did not make the cut for the GV box and it didn't so I'm thinking a lot of the more obscure material will be at the band's discretion if nothing else.

This obviously also goes for the rarities and unreleased tracks as well but Beach Boys fans are lucky in a sense that they have people heading up this project who are aware of what Beach Boys fans are clamoring for.  So at the very least it could be assumed that some of our suggestions have at least reached their intended destinations.  As to whether or not those suggestions are acted upon is obviously anyone's guess. 

If it isn't 12 discs and 100% new, I ain't interested.

Dunno if it's already mentioned here, but all the MIC tracks should be in stereo (whenever possible). only hardcore fans need mono versions from the mono years and they already have the original LP's or mono digital files so pointless to put out more mono stuff. More stereo Smile stuff and WH would be great for this release.

Wouldn't it be AWESOME if one of them was the radio Luxembourg recording of 'I've got a friend'*...it's the best version I've heard, and in hearing it in decent quality might just make my life.

Even if many of their classic tracks are included, they could be remastered (and many of the songs on previous greatest hits collections could use a better, less bright or compressed mastering) and they could use alternate mixes, whether vintage or newly created mixes.  Wild Honey stereo tracks, Surfin' Safari stereo tracks, unreleased takes from the Hite Morgan sessions (easily could take up half of the first CD), original Brian mixes of outtakes like Trombone Dixie, Child is Father to the Man, etc.  They could easily make MOSt of the set (75% or more) previously unreleased tracks (not songs, but tracks) and they certainly have had the time to do it.

I hope they separate the live tracks from the studio sessions - I never liked how they mixed up the Beatles live stuff and studio outtakes on Anthology.  The difference in sound quality from track to track was disorienting.

Personally, I absolutely love the a capella mixes. Add Some Music to Your Day was a revelation, and Forever is sublime. The Smile Backing Vocals montage might be my favorite part of the box set.

They're not how the songs were intended to be heard, but it reveals the complexity of the arrangements and the deft handling of each part. And the blend. The sound of the pure blend is what makes me happy, and I want to hear as many examples as we can, whether from when the guys were barely 20 years old or from last year's recordings for TWGMTR.

The instrumental-only versions don't have the same effect on me, but they're just as interesting. More vocals-only mixes please!

That very much depends on whether we're talking about vintage or modern mixes. The modern stereo remixes of, say, Smiley Smile, sound much better than the original mono, but the mono mix of Surfer Girl is absolutely revelatory when compared to the horrible 60s stereo version that had been on CD for decades.

I also think that if vintage mixes exist of unreleased stuff, they should be used -- if, say, a completed 1966 Surf's Up was found, with a vintage mono mix from Brian, I would want to hear that rather than a stereo reconstruction from the multitracks.

But if you're talking about released tracks, but ones that have previously only been issued in mono, being remixed into stereo, or including the 2012 stereo mixes from the remasters, then that makes some sense.

I thought the orchestration on the second movement suffered a little on that mix. Glad they held back until 1971 with that one.

Everyday I come here hoping today will be the day we get some news. Every day I'm disappointed. Where is this bloody boxset?

I doubt we'll get any news until June.   Maybe late-June.  TSS box info didn't come out this far in advance.

In 50% I included new mixes; like mono to stereo, acapella, instrumental, alternate/extended mixes. Not saying we will get three cds of vault material (though I'd prefer that). Don't forget the BeaChago tapes and C Hall for unreleased live stuff.

Al told me they were finishing some of the leftover Radio tracks and were going to rerecord some of the CD versions in different arrangements (as that was yet to happen, at the time,  I have  no idea if it did. He said they were going into the studio before leaving for Europe.).

If I were a PR/marketing guy, I'd use the PR campaign for the C50 Live Album to start creating a buzz for  MIC. They aren't going to push the boxset with the live album yet to ccome out.

I made the 50 Big Ones being for the casual fans and MIC being for the hardcore fans comparison a few months ago. It would be nice of this was a treat for the Beach Boys loyal fan base like TSS was.

I doubt it though. Except Barbra Ann and Surfin USA to take up precious space.

There are few artists that take that risk though.  Of the artists I follow only Bruce Springsteen had the courage to release a box set devoted entirely to rarities without any retread through his familiar catalog.  The Beatles did have their "Anthology" series but those were two disc sets spaced out by enough time in between releases where the consumer could choose to go ahead with the series or not if he so chose.

To be honest though from my vantage point, Beach Boys fans have nothing to complain about when it comes to catering to the hardcore fanbase.  Few blue chip bands have gone as far as The Beach Boys have in presenting package after package filled with interesting and rare material that their fans covet.  While it's true that The Beach Boys cater towards the casual fans as well with endless repackaging of their greatest hits, they have also been quite mindful of their hardcore fanbase for two solid decades now.  I also remember Mark Linett saying in an interview last year that he hopes to have future opportunities to continue to bring more rare and unique Beach Boys product to the masses in the future.  But I assume much like anything else it's all a question of supply and demand.  If Beach Boys fans keep shelling out for these box sets and rarities packages, we'll keep getting more down the line.

So before anyone gripes there are tons of other fanbases who would give their eye teeth to have been as spoiled as Beach Boys fans have been in terms of having a team behind their releases that really is in synch with what the Beach Boys fanbase wants. 

The Brian supervised mono mix has never been released - it was not on UM and was discovered after the Pet Sounds box set.  Never booted.  I want it!

I saw a tentative track list many many months ago.  I know it has been changed and changed back since then.

I'm not going to get into specifics so as not to get anybody into trouble, and also I'd hate to say X track was going to be on and then it not happen.  But I was REALLY impressed.  If that track list made it through the approval process (a big "IF") then fans will be in for a treat. 

And I also have heard that Mike did NOT block the coolness.

By the way, over at the Steve Hoffman forums(stevehoffman.tv) there's an ongoing discussion thread about whether (in the absence of "Made in California") people should seek out the "Good Vibrations: 30 Years of The Beach Boys" box set. Obviously, outside of the true believers who populate this forum, most other people have given up on the idea that "Made in California" will ever be released. 18 months after Capitol's initial announcement and still The Beach Boys & Capitol maintain their "Wall of Secrecy" policy....showing total contempt for the fans.

Or maybe they just want to know whether they should grab "30 Years of GV" before it becomes hard to find. Just because a new box is coming doesn't mean the old box won't retain some value.  It has alot of cool stuff on it and not all of it will necessarily be repeated on MIC. Nor will the sound quality necessarily be superior. These are things which remain to be seen. Even still, historically, the GV box is still relevant as a highly pleasing trip through Beach Boys history and will never be totally dismissable....in my opinion.....

In terms  of your wall of secrecy...there isn't any. The box set has been announced for release on August 27, 2013. It' s been announced as being titled Made In California. It's been announced as being 6 CDs. Even if that info were still to change ten times in the upcoming months, there's nothing at all "secretive" about any of it as of now.

Well, I can't really disagree with any of that. It probably is futile. I guess I just found his latest comment to be so utterly baseless -- even by his own standards -- that my usual penchant to totally ignore him got corrupted. I figured there had to be some rational explanation on his part. Shame on me.

I'm really hopeful for the August release, but I'd still like to hear an announcement from Capitol soon.

My feeling is -- and it's purely speculation on my part -- that they're probably waiting until the 2-CD live set is released and on it's own two legs before giving us some sort of track list or official presser for the big box. That is, as not to steal whatever "thunder" that earlier release might have. Perhaps not wanting it to see it get lost in the shuffle.

The Smile Sessions tracklist announcement was made August 27, 2011. Almost exactly two months before its release. (November 1st).
So we shouldn't expect the Made In California tracklist to appear before the end of June.

You don't really believe that...you just wanted to use "vaporware" in a post.

"Vaporware" is a computer industry expression for product that is promoted (or even advertised) but which, in reality, does not exist. As for "Made in California",  it doesn't even meet the minimum criteria for vaporware, since there is no promotion. And Capitol's statement (in December 2010) didn't even mention a title for the box set  project. The title "Made in California" may be nothing more than a product of fan-generated rumor on the internet.

In all likelyhood, given the difficulties of dealing with the dysfunctional , feuding Beach Boys, Capitol(under its new owners) probably doesn't even care whether The Beach Boys ever agree to or deliver the box set project. "50 Big Ones" and the 12 album remasters didn't sell in huge quantities. Capitol has plenty of other, much easier ways to make money: by releasing a CD or download by one Capitol's  contemporary 21st century artists. Such product will easily outsell the mythical Beach Boys box set.  For Capitol, releasing contemporary music (by artists eager to see their music released) is simply taking  the path of least resistance.

So you did simply want to use the word vaporware, since by your definition the box set is not.
 It's been ventured before, and will probably be again, so I suggest:  you swear now that if the box does appear you will never ever darken this board again with your posting. and stick to it.
 If the box doesn't appear, the rest of us will leave this board to you. I swear.

Phil, you never replied to my bet. MIC doesn't come out, I permanently quit the board. If it comes out this summer, you do the same. Time to put up or shut up!

I believe in a concept that may seem old-fashioned to many of you, and it is this: If you make a promise, then you keep that promise. If you say that you're going to release a box set "Later This Year"(I.E. in 2012), then you follow through and you DELIVER THE GOODS. The blame for the situation we now have resides primarily with the feuding Beach Boys, and, to a lesser extent, with Capitol Records.

One thing that is certain(and I'm sure that we can all agree on this): None of us music fans are to blame that The Beach Boys have split into two feuding factions. We are not to blame for the fact that they can't get along with each other.

Maybe they (The Beach Boys) should recognize that it is time to put the fans first, and permit the box set to be released. Then, they can go back to hating and suing each other for the remainder of their days. Without the fans, neither faction has a career.

I want the box set as much as everybody, but if new material was/is discovered after the announcment of the box, then I would gladly wait another 6 or so months until said material can be evaluated and properly considered. What if they released the box set tomorrow, and found the lost vocal sessions for "I Ran" next week? Or Dennis's Labor Day?

Do you remember back before SMiLE came out and I said that Alan Boyd whispered something in my ear about it and I went "WHOA?" but never said what the "whoa" thing was?  I even got in trouble for THAT.  I ain't sayin' nuthin', except that when I saw this many moons back, it was enough of a fanboy wishlist that my first reaction was "I'll be amazed if something this cool gets past the BBs."  But my understanding is, after a few back and forths that got resolved, for the most part, it did. 

I did leave a one oblique comment about a particular song in another thread but I think people thought I was making a joke (which was, to be honest, my intent).  So there.

Now I got my own world tour to get ready for...

I'll put this delicately, as I know he posts here intermittently, but I take it David Leaf won't be doing the liner notes for this box. It's funny that he pretty much did everything from the late 80's till....well, 2004. For everything else it was, BWPS was a political moment for the BB's as a whole. Did he jump or was he pushed?

He didn't do anything for the Beach Boys (as opposed to Brian) after the PS box -- he didn't do Hawthorne, Endless Harmony, Ultimate Christmas or the Brother reissues, all of which were pre-2004. And while I believe he is (or was at one point) persona non grata with Brian and/or his 'people', that didn't happen until at least 2008 -- Leaf was at the premiere of That Lucky Old Sun in London.

He was very active with Brian's touring career up to BWPS though. I got meet and greet passes from him a few times. He seemed a lovely guy.

I always enjoyed his liner notes, especially in the '93 and PS box. I felt his input and insight were solely lacking from the Smile set seeing as how he played as big a part as anyone in keeping the flame alive all those years. Just another casualty of the Melanagement, eh?

Personally I am chuffed that Leaf won't be writing the liner notes this time as there was so much BS in what he wrote over the years.

I seem to recall that he was already on the outs with Brian's people before TLOS, but he was indeed at the premiere. As always, AGD knows where the bodies on this one are buried.

I actually spoke to Leaf about his non-involvement in the Brother Years Re-issues after a BW show in '99 or 2000 and his only comment was "Ask Capitol". He ended our chat shortly thereafter...

I wasn't expecting much, maybe some remixes and a single mix here and there.  Maybe some "Sherry She Needs Me," kind of stuff.  All great stuff of course, but we have SMiLE now, so I thought that might have been enough "adventurous material" for this decade.

But now you got me thinking, Adult Child kind of sh-t.   8)  Oh man, oh man!!  Ok...I'm not gonna hold out hope, but for me, anything from the Brian is back-era (and the Brian isn't back, he's home pounding out songs on his piano while Denny runs to grab some McDonald's hamburgers for Brian) - era is what I'm talking about.

You see, the "Rockshow" film( to be released on DVD & Bluray in June with the concert presented in full for the first time; 8 more songs than the VHS or Laserdisc) was filmed (guess where).....at The Cow Palace!!! I ordered "The Monkees Present" set within minutes of it being offered online(today at 3 P.M. pacific time in the U.S.A.). I'm a HUGE Monkees fan, having seen them in July 1967 when I was 11 years old(I was at the 2nd of six shows where The Jimi Hendrix Experience was one of the opening acts), and I've bought all of Rhino's 2-CD & 3-CD expanded Monkees releases. Sadly, the 3-CD box set of "The Monkees Present" will be the final release by the "Rhino Handmade" label. It's not being offered at Rhino's website, but instead it is being offered at The Monkees' own website.

How come Tork is missing from the album art?

Because Tork left the group after the release of the album "Head"(or, more precisely, after the completion of the "Thirty-Three and a Third Revolutions Per Monkee" T.V. special). "The Monkees Present" was the 2nd post-Tork album("Instant Replay" was the first). I think Tork never got over the fact that none of the songs he had written or recorded during sessions for "The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees" were selected for the album, the result being that the piano playing on "Daydream Believer" was Tork's only appearance on "The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees".

Yeah, it was the MIC proposed track list -- at least I assume so.  It didn't have a name then.

My reaction was something along the lines of "hey, it's like someone went through all the Smiley Smile Message Board posts and took notes of everyone's wish lists..."  (I strongly suspect that someone's name was Boyd)

And also, I have to say, every time I get exposed to this kind of information I deliberately try not to pay too close attention to it.  It's kind of the logic that, if someone tortures you, you can't divulge what you don't know (or can't remember).  I confess I did have another "whoa" moment but, well, you'll hopefully have your own soon enough.

Phil, I'm just going to point out something I pointed out last year.

In the space of about twelve months, they put out:  a comprehensive Smile Sessions box set, a new album, two different Greatest Hits, a whole stack of remastered albums, and a second career-spanning box-set.  That's approximately twenty-two discs of Beach Boys material.  More Beach Boys stuff than I think anyone has ever put out, ever, in a similar length of time.

You said the Smile Sessions box set would never come out.

You said the new album would never come out.

You said the Greatest Hits would never come out.

You said the remastered albums would never come out.

Even after the remastered albums came out in Japan, you said the remastered albums would never come out.

Now you're saying the box set will never come out.

You never gave the slightest indication that you felt your statements were in any way doubtful.

It costs time and energy, esp. if the poster in question is very rigid in his/her opinions. I don't think anyone's been particularly cruel to Phil here, with the possible exception of Jay. Jon pointed out to him that he's been consistently wrong in all his complaints, John said that all Phil does is complain, and I made a (fairly poor) joke.

Phil's posts can get very, very irritating at times, when literally *all* he has to say on the topic of the Beach Boys is "the box set will never come out", and his posts on that subject can get very tiresome. I don't think he has any mental health problems (and if he did, as I just said on another thread, mental health problems aren't a "get out of bad behaviour free" card), and nor do I think he's trolling. I think he's a pessimist, and I have a lot of sympathy with that in the general case -- but in the specific case of the Beach Boys he's been proved wrong time and again in the last couple of years.

I don't think anyone wants to shut Phil up -- I certainly don't, he's obviously someone with a reasonable amount of musical knowledge -- but he has made his opinion about the box very, very, *very* clear at this point, and by restating it he is only adding to the noise, not to the signal.

I think if he talked about *anything* else Beach Boys related, the annoyance with him would drop right down. But when he comes along and says the same things yet again, it's only reasonable that people react with exasperation or annoyance.

your hypothetical example, analogy if you will, would automatically lead to intervention of the admins. Well, they made it clear to PC that his submissions were unacceptable in the past. So it's not as if nothing at all would happen if all of us were to behave the way I do. I guess I wanted to say: I don't care about what PC posts. Should others post evident garbage that is inconsistent with their normal opinions, I would certainly say something about it.

Ye, I think it is a truism that certain personalities say things for attention. Making anyone like that a focus can play right into what they are seeking. I want to make it clear one more time that nobody (especially a person who is as dedicated as AGD) should have to take personal affronts lying down, but some people just want to be a talking point. Nope.  "Rock Show" was filmed in New York, Seattle, and Los Angeles.  The Cow Palace is in San Francisco.

An exciting year for archival releases.  We got the Wings set, Monkees Present, upcoming Beach Boys box, and a 17-disc Harry Nilsson box was just announced for late July (And $80 cheaper on Amazon UK than US).

By the way, contrast the Monkees & Wings product with the proposed Beach Boys box set. We have a tracklisting and photo of the Monkees & Wings products, but, after 18 months, NOTHING for the Beach Boys product. As for postponements, I would note, that even during the 4 years of postponement's on Universal Music "The Complete Motown Singles Vol.12A"(the tracklisting and photo were finally revealed today!), at least we were told the reason why(problems getting permission from several artists)

I know that you guys all think that I'm unreasonable, mentally ill or whatever, but I do think that when The Beach Boys box failed to appear in 2012, that some sort of statement should have been issued, to, at least assert that Capitol and/or The Beach Boys were still ATTEMPTING to complete the project, and if not, to simply tell the fans that the project is in limbo, or perhaps not to be.

I've come to this conclusion: that most,if not all of you, think that it's entirely reasonable that Capitol has maintained total silence concerning the Beach Boys box set project . Most people(other than the obsessed fans that populate forums like this) long ago forgot about this project, and moved on with their lives and moved on with their music collecting hobbies.

The obsessed fans were the only ones keeping the flame burning(with our hopes that the box set may yet appear), even in the face of Capitol's seeming apathy.

Phil - this band is unlike any other. They are a constant work-in-progress, and I don't mean any impertinence. I wouldn't venture to diagnose you as "mentally ill."  I'm not a doctor.   ;)

My grandmother used to say, "When the apple is ready, it will fall off the tree." Naysayers had to "eat their words with a fork and spoon" recently with C50 which was reported almost universally as "Never gonna happen." And, it did.

Perhaps, there are emerging tracks, or close "ties" for potentially included tracks.  They'll tell us when it's ready.  

What obsession with secrecy? The Monkees Present box set tracklist has been released because the release date is expected to be July 30, two and a half months from now. There were no prior announcements about that box that I saw, and I'm very active in the Monkees fan community (I may have missed something, but I doubt it) -- everyone assumed there'd be one, but no announcements were made until now.

Personally, I only expect announcements when or if there's something new to announce, not just a weekly bulletin of "yep, still doing it", "still doing our jobs", "on holiday this week", "still working"....

Assuming the late-August release date is correct for the Made In California set, and that Capitol/Universal runs to the same timescale as Rhino/Warners, then we should expect information in about a month.

(And I for one wouldn't dream of assuming you were mentally ill, but nor would I think any worse of you if you were...)

This idea just occurred to me: What if Capitol did decide to announce a track listing, and it turned out to be an anti-climax, sort of like the 17-disc Moody Blues box(which has several hours of unreleased concert recordings, but not ONE unreleased studio track) . We may yet find ourselves saying, "So this is why they didn't want us to know anything".

I suspect that some people will find the tracklist an anticlimax no matter what it is, given some of the conflicting demands that have been made in these threads. That said, Adam Marsland said earlier in this thread (and AGD said this went with what he knows) that he'd seen a provisional tracklist, which he understands to be close to the final one, and that it's a Beach Boys fan's dream.

My guess is that we don't have too much to worry about, but if it turns out not to be very good, then the solution's simple -- just don't buy it. I won't, if it doesn't look any good.

Alan Boyd has kindly asked the Professor to pass on to the SS board that all is going well, and he suspects you all will enjoy the selection and the rarities of the 6 albums, with various live and unreleased cuts--many of which will fulfill some announced and tormented longings that I have seen expressed in these pages.  The release date is not firm, but hold on, and I am sure that we will all enjoy all of it.

This is no secret, but he was also not sanguine about a BB album for this year (it's only the silly Professor who thought it possible) and is not so sanguine about the full-show DVD releases that we all dream of (as Andrew H has explained, the licencing is just too formidable).  But AB himself is is good health and spirits on the heals of his Grammy, and the professor takes this moment to salute and thank him for enabling so much happiness and joy. So on all matters BB, I suggest we relax and enjoy the only sure things: the live album, and the boxed set, which are real and which both will be majestic.

The ultimate point of his kind update?  Hold on, dear brother!

Lord help me but I actually do agree with you to a degree on the highlighted part above Phil, yes it would have been nice to have a had a bone thrown when the box was delayed. Still there have been enough subtle nods and winks from people on this board (and elsewhere) very much in the know in the past few months to clear away any doubts about the box's future.

Have to agree that the new Moodies box is a big disappointment but MIC is gonna be awesome. I am seeing some very interesting things in my crystal ball.

There's a key point that needs to be addressed, Phil. There was never a concrete, set-in-stone, 2012 street date for the MIC box. Nor, was there ever an absolute or official announcement for any BBs box set by Capitol in 2012. All that existed in 2012 were internet rumblings of a proposed box set that would *hopefully* be out that year. There may have even been a suggestion or two of it coming out by Christmas. A comment here and there from those in-the-know. But, again, that was merely internet rumblings, hopes and dreams. Thus, why on earth should Capitol issue an update statement on something that was never officially announced in the first place? You're penalizing Capitol for not commenting on *nebulous* "product"...as you like to call it!

Let me put it this way: You're a hardcore music fan. You obviously know that things get proposed, suggested and held-up all the time. Heck, even when things *have* been officially announced. You're a Hollies fan. You certainly remember that "Treasured Hits and Hidden Treasures" 2-CD set (or whatever the hell it was initially called) that got held up for two years, eventually became a 3-CD set, and finally got released as "30th Anniversary Collection." And, unlike MIC, this was something that WAS officially announced and initially, publicly commented on by the powers-that-be. Does that make EMI the label of secrecy and contempt, too, for the delay and about-face? I'll tell you this much, like you, I've done liner notes and annotations on a few occasions for a small label. Nothing fancy or utterly important, but something very real in terms of back catalog material. I saw a proposed title get mastered...artwork drawn up...test-pressings made. Only to have the whole thing canceled for an almost unbelievable reason. And it had nothing to to do with secrecy or contempt on the label's part. So, please stop acting like there's some kind of grand conspiracy, or "mission to divide fans" on Capitol's part -- every single time, and the minute something gets proposed or suggested. Short of a personal invitation to the mastering session, I'm not sure anything will ever satisfy your need to accuse when it comes to Capitol and the Beach Boys. Considering the sheer amount of BBs "product" we've had over the last two years, I'd reckon they just want to pace themselves, for god's sake, before they make a concrete and definitive announcement. Does that sound like contempt?

No one who isn't a big Beach Boys fan will buy a pricey Beach Boys item like a six disc box set. So I guess it makes perfect sense that only the, as you call them, "obsessed" fans care. The casual fans never cared to begin with.

Pretty much exactly what I suspected on all counts, but it's nice to have this kind of confirmation.

Hmm so does this mean it isn't coming out on 8/27?  I wouldn't be surprised to see it get pushed back until the Christmas market.  It would make a lot of folks around here blue if it did but I'm preparing for that eventuality. 

No, all he said was "the release date is not firm". That Monkees box Phil's been talking about also doesn't have a firm release date, even though they're already taking pre-orders. I just bought it, and the site says "Please note: The release date 7/30/13 is not yet finalized and subject to change. You will be notified if there is a delay in the arrival date for your product.  Cover art is not final and may change."

Clearly the record label in that case is just not able to guarantee release dates two months out, and I assume something similar is the case with Made In California. Doesn't mean they're not planning on an August release.

Once again, spoken as one who doesn't have the slightest clue about what he's talking about. Someone should put him out of his - and our - misery.

Here's three givens. The box will happen. There will be unreleased tracks. And Cohen will find something else to bitch about - two seconds edited from "(WIBNT)LA", probably, although as he's never heard it, how would he know ? Never stopped him before, of course: one of the minor joys  about the Smile box track listing being released was him weeping and wailing about the promo piece being omitted, and knowing that it was included, as a hidden track. That was very sweet.  ;D

If you were wondering what, if anything I had hoped for in a Beach Boys box set, I would say: previously unheard 1960's & 1970's concert recordings, more "Smile" material, some "Smiley Smile"/"Wild Honey"/"Friends" vault tracks(if any have been found),some more stereo remixes, and some (officially) unreleased 1970's songs. But I should caution, that, as recording technology matured(with the introduction of 16 & 24 track recording in the 1970's, then the introduction of digital recording, drum machines & computer-programmed instrumentation in the 1980's), that true alternate takes(as opposed to alternate mixes with some different vocal or instrumental parts) became , increasingly a thing of the past. And, as a primarily vocal group(though they did sometimes play instruments in the studio), that The Beach Boys didn't add vocals until  satisfactory instrumental tracks had been achieved.

This was often true for Beach Boys recordings from the 1970's onward, but especially true for The Moody Blues, whose recordings(particularly with producer Tony Visconti) became, increasingly a result of computer programming(as opposed to hand-played instruments). True outtakes(in the 1960's sense) became more infrequent.

You were the one who denounced me for thinking that the "Smile" promo message should be included in the "Smile" box set. That promo message(a reminder of what could have been, but was not to be...in 1967) was part of the "Smile" legend.

That is true. The internet is about the biggest collection of disparate personalities brought together by a common interest -- usually cloaked in some kind of safe haven and often involving carefree anonymity -- that I can think of. I personally still think it's incredibly rude to tell someone who comes bearing credible, first-hand or primary source information, that the information they're bearing doesn't actually exist. Which is essentially what Phil is continually doing. If those same "info bearers" are able to let that roll off their back, I think that's great. That's an admirable quality in my eyes. I'm not sure I could always be that big of a man. Maybe 9 out of 10 times I could, but......I definitely believe in breaking points as well. :)

Not sure if this is true. There were a couple of official Capitol press releases with the promise of a "career-spanning boxed set." No more specifics than that, though.

I stand corrected, as I just found that press release. As noted, still pretty vague though in terms of any specifics, or a specific presser announcing the box itself. Basically, all the goodies they have planned to commemorate the 50th in 2012, including a career-spanning box set.

One thing is obvious about our attempts to extract this box set from a reluctant record company and/or feuding group: There is no joy in this. This is not worth our collective efforts. In the same way that Capitol Records will take the path of least resistance and release music by the label's 21st century contemporary artists, I , as a compact disc consumer, will take the path of least resistance, and buy CD box set "product" by artists and labels who are agreeable to releasing box sets with a minimum of unpleasant, stressful game-playing.

They're working on it, it'll be done when it's done. When it is, those of us who want to will buy it.

Ooh, it's so exciting and heroic to think of it that way though.  The valiant fan fighting against the insidious forces at the tower, sending Tom Cruise in to hover inches off the floor in the secret, sterile Beach Boys Box Set Room.  But no--Mike sees Tom Cruise on his video monitor and alerts a Capitol suit that an extraction attempt is underway.  Mike reaches for his gun as he frantically enters the code to allow access to the room, and sure enough, when the huge door swings open, Tom Cruise is gone with the boxset. 

But it's not over.  Can it ever be over, really?  There is no joy in this.  Brian and Al pursue Tom Cruise on the rooftops of the Argyle Street businesses, shooting at him and aiming to kill.  Cruise only escapes when a feud breaks out between Al and Brian over how to proceed.  We might just have the boxset now!

But no.  Just when Tom Cruise is about to drop off the discs at our headquarters, a dark figure emerges from the shadows.  Cruise was expecting Phil, but instead it's Bruce. 

"I'll be taking those," says Bruce.  "No," says Tom.

"I see this won't be easy," says Bruce, "I admire your fortitude in the face of this unpleasant, stressful game playing."

"It's barely worth it anymore," says Tom.  "This is it for me.  I'm going back to getting boxed sets from artists and labels who are agreeable."

Bruce chortles.  "You assume that you're going to live that long.  My dear friend, I'm afraid that the last artist you'll ever meet is anything but agreeable."

Bruce raises the shotgun he'd been holding at his side and nonchalantly points it in Tom's direction.

"Hand over the boxed set."

"Not gonna happen, Bruce."

With a sickening boom, Tom is brought to the ground.

"The pain you feel is associated with no longer having a knee, Tom.  Would you like to see how it feels to live without a face, or shall I just take the boxed set now?"

Tom is so wracked with pain that he is unable to speak.  He simply releases his grip on the set.

"There were are."  Says Bruce.  Tom starts to try to drag his useless body away, but Bruce interrupts.

"Tom, don't leave just yet, I want to play you something."

Bruce takes one of the discs out of the packaging and loads it into a conveniently located nearby CD player.

"This is a little tune by Dennis Wilson.  It's called 'Wouldn't it be nice (to live again.)'  I thought it would be an appropriate thing to play right now, since in these, your last moments on earth, you're probably thinking the same sentiment."

The track played.  At this point, Tom could only close his eyes and submit to the music.  And although the flute solo was a bit longer than Tom personally would have liked, he knew that that flute solo was the only thing between him and Bruce's terrible, final justice.

Is it so irrational that I should opt to direct my collecting efforts in the direction of CD box sets which are much more likely (than the Beach Boys box set) to be released? Our quest for this proposed Beach Boys box set has brought nothing but frustration. Other box sets, such as the 3-CD expanded edition of "The Monkees Present" or the 5-CD set "The Complete Motown Singles Vol.12A" are almost certain to be released, and therefore bring pleasure, happiness etc.

I'm aware that, even if an August release (or even a Christmas season release) for The Beach Boys box set doesn't happen, that there are some die-hard true believers (on this forum) who will vent their frustrations at me, and then insist that the box set will be released in 2014, but there must come a point where most rational collectors will assume that the project could not be successfully completed, or that all the necessary musician "Sign-Offs" (permissions) could not be obtained. Would December 31, 2013 be a reasonable point to assume the Beach Boys box set is not to be?

It is   irrational when people WHO KNOW FAR BETTER THAN YOU DO (as they are closer to the process) are telling you that the box IS coming out and you completely disregard them. This is the same garbage you pulled during TSS. You still haven't admitted to being wrong there. The fact that you are unaware of the status of MIC's completion speaks volumes; there are some of us who DO know, and let's just say you are very far off the mark here.

And for the final time...the word is boxed set, not 'box set'. The former is a collection of various cds (say, around six) containing music (in this case, music by the greatest band of all time). The latter is a collection of containers and receptacles for permanent use as storage, or for temporary use often for transporting contents and generally square in shape.

There are some people on this forum who CLAIM that they have inside information, that they've seen a proposed track listing for The Beach Boys Boxed set etc., but how do we know if any of these claims are for real? Anyone could invent such claims.

This project should never have dragged on for  this long(for 18 months, or perhaps longer, if work had already been underway at the time of Capitol's original announcement in December 2011)

My own sadness is that whatever BW is working on, with Al obviously involved and maybe Dave (I don't know and Alan did not say) is not a BB album. Will there ever be a BB album?

Unrelated to my report here, but still in my head, is what Mike said in those recent interviews: he wants to write with Brian but was prevented from doing so; Mike has clearly distanced himself from Radio, which must mean that it is not a BB album as he sees it or could have hoped to see it. Result. . . . . .stop hoping for anything unreal and save up to buy the 2 upcoming albums-the live and the box.

I think it comes down to the simple fact and I've said this several times as one of the biggest gathering forums for Beach Boys fans, to have daily pissing contests between essentially two members speaks very lowly of the forum.  I'm used to it by now and nine times out of ten turn a blind eye to it, but I'd imagine that more than one visitor has ventured into these threads hoping to find information on the band and instead have been subjected to page upon page of nasty abuse hurled back and forth between members.  Again it just doesn't speak well for what should be an inclusive, fan-friendly community.  So to quote monicker, yes that is "insanity" in a manner of speaking.

If anyone takes a statement on a message board about blowing up someone's house at all seriously they need to get out more. It's a classical rhetorical device -- going over the top for effect when someone irritates you.

Between this and folks freaking out on the other thread after a mild pushback over the character of VDP, I'd say that folks here could use thicker skins. People have a right to say what they like. But they don't have a right to say it free of any criticism or questioning.

I'm impressed that it only took AGD about 3 days to go from the guy who it was 'nice to have you back' to 'for God's sake get rid of the madman again'.  :-D

I was hardly around on this board this last weekend (sometimes private family matters have priority), but I have just read the last couple of pages of this topic, and thought it would be good to response.

First of all I want to stand up for Billy here.

As most of you probably know we have recently made the decision to make quicker individual decisions as moderators. This means that we don’t start discussing if a majority of the mods thinks we should take action (or not), but that one mod individually can decide if that’s necessary. After all, if on further consideration we conclude we should alter a decision, we can always do so.
Now Billy had a tough decision to make. We know that when it comes to this particular case (it’s not the first time) it’s hard to make a decision that would please everybody here. At the end, Billy did what in his opinion was the best solution for now in order to get things back on track on this board. I'm not sure sure what I would have done, and I'm glad Billy took action. If the language that was used was a bit harsh, then so be it. You don’t have to agree with us, but please understand we don’t do this because we think it’s fun to ban someone, even it’s only temporary.

Now as for this particular case.

Some of you have made some good points on where to draw the line when it comes to banning. Yes, I have read the responses of AGD as well. And yes – if it’s indeed the case that Phil has a mental issue (I really hate to talk about these kind of matters on this board or this topic) – then the last thing that would help is to threaten the guy with physical action (even it’s only metaphorically speaking). If Phil is deliberately doing this (aka he’s trolling) then it doesn’t help either, as he probably only gets a kick out of it anyway. So either way it’s a waste of energy, and apart from that not the behavior we expect to see here.
Now I’m not planning on sending a few extra bans out here right now. Mind you: it is not as if I’m trying to protect AGD, although it might come across like that. I just want to see the emotions being reduced. He has had his share of temp. bans in the past as well, even as of recent. But I do want to encourage AGD to at least distance himself from (and remove) the aggressive remarks against Phil. After all if “the smile you send out returns to you”, so does “those who play at bowls must look (out) for rubs”. (had to look that proverb  ;D  , I hope you get the point)

I'm a moderator on a Led Zeppelin board and I can tell you a guy like Phil would have been banned long ago.  While we have just as much conjecture about unreleased things and the like (and by the way Phil, the Beach Boys can't hold a candle to the level of secrecy that Jimmy Page works under) we simply won't put up with trolling and/or even people that are mentally unstable.  There are a lot of wacko people into Zeppelin and mentally ill or not, it's better for all if they are not involved.  Our admin puts the hammer down on controversial topics, trolls, and psychos.  It works.

Good for you! Maybe listen to the mods on this board then.

And again, for those who are worried about the lack of announcements, the Nilsson box was announced yesterday and it's being released at the end of July. Which suggests that a two month or so lead time *is* the standard for this kind of order.

(Also, for those in the US who want the Nilsson box set, it's actually significantly cheaper for you to pre-order from amazon.co.uk right now than .com, even taking shipping into account. It's £46 on the UK site and $146 on the US site...)

That is something I don't understand.  One explanation we always get from compilers of box sets and why they aren't more expansive than they are is that the record company put a cap on the number of discs they could allot to the box set.  There is also the commonly told explanation that box sets in this day and age no longer sell and artists are discouraged from compiling them. 

Then comes along something like The Nilsson box set and I believe the recent box set by The Grateful Dead and that quite frankly calls a lot of that logic into question.  I'm not going to even get into this other band I follow whose archival output over the past decade plus would have you think that their entire outfit has folded up shop and called it quits. 

The vast majority of the 'bonus tracks' on the Nilsson box are just the bonus tracks from previous reissues - in a way, it's just getting every single reissue under one roof and hopefully remastering them, but just standardising the catalogue in 2013 and getting everything back in print. There's a bit more on some discs, but if I'd been religiously buying Nilsson reissues as some people do with The Beach Boys as they came out I'd be a bit pissed by this box.

That said, I've got 95% of the sh*t on that Nilsson box on bootleg, so it's more akin to The Smile Sessions deal for me  :lol

That's not quite true -- there are at least fifty songs on that box that have never been released in any format, a bunch more that haven't been released on CD, and I don't think the mono mixes of Aerial Ballet or Pandemonium Shadow Show have ever been released on CD before.
Frankly, even if I did own all of the albums on CD (and I only own the first few) I'd think the UK price for the box (£46) more than reasonable for just the completely-unreleased stuff.

I own everything up to Son of Smilsson so buying the box even without the rarities is value for me. Out of print CD issues of p*ssy Cats are very expensive.

I've got most of them (hoarder related) and my feeling was that only 'Nilsson Schmilsson' and 'The point' are killer records, the earlier ones have their moments, and he totally went off the boil after. '71.

Fair or do i need to revisit?

While I feel Nilsson Schmilsson is probably his high point, I still think there is a lot to love after that. Son of Schmilsson is a good album, albeit a little less focused. One can definitely tell it's quite a bit looser than its predecessor and the rockers don't rock as hard, nor do the ballads hit as hard. However, "Joy", "You're Breakin' My Heart", "Remember (Christmas)", and pretty much everything on there is great.

I really like A Touch of Schmilsson in the Night but if you aren't into straight readings of pre-rock standards you might not like this. However, I gotta admit that while I admire Harry for doing this as a labor of love, I would puke if Bruce Johnston did an album like this. But anyways, if you're unsure if you like this kinda thing, check out some samples first.

Then comes the Lennon produced p*ssy Cats which I personally love. "Suburban Homesick Blues" and "Rock Around The Clock" are two are Nilsson's hardest rocking cuts. "Don't Forget Me" fits in with the material from his prior album, but it's a Nilsson original, and even has a few funny lines, despite the despairing nature of the song. "Many Rivers To Cross" and "Save the Last Dance for Me" are also great. Now be warned, a lot of people think he lost his voice on this, and it is true that he doesn't sound as polished on these songs as he did on h is earlier work, I think it fits the nature of this material regardless. Also interesting that Harry Nilsson "losing his voice" still sounded like Harry, while Brian Wilson losing his voice sounded nothing like the same person. Brian's situation is SO weird.

Now I don't know the rest of his discography extremely well except for Knnillssonn, which I thought was extremely strong. It had the "standards" pre-rock type vibe of A Little Touch... but with original material. "All I Think About Is You" and "Perfect Day" are lovely, and pretty much everything on that album is great. Totally mellow album by the way. And "Who Done It?" is a super interesting story-song.

Anyways, hope that helps.

I was away for 2 weeks, just read these last few pages, and like to say that I'm generally pleased with the behavior of the mods, except calling Phil a reincarnated sceptic tank (or whatever the wording was), that's not good behavior.

I'm generally annoyed by Phils monothematic postings too though and think banning him is IMHO the second best choice - the one I'd prefer was displaying all of his posts in, say, yellow color so it would be easier to avoid reading them.

I feel no hatred against Phil, I feel sorry for him, it must be a hard life if you're like that. But as his postings stir up that many bad emotions in the group, the group must be protected. I hope in real life Phil gets some help.

As for AGD... I hope he manages to control himself a bit more when he's tempted to unnecessarily post his extremely negative emotions. That's actually selfish in a way. Unlike Phil AGD has things to say that are worth reading though.

Well, they do stir up bad emotions. Phil adds nothing to the conversation, except to convince that a fraud is going on, which of course is BS. At least Andrew adds insight & knowledge to the forum. We all have rant & raved in here at one time or another and we have all acted badly at one time or another. Andrew is no different than the rest of us. He has good and bad days like everyone else. He's been banned when warranted, by the Mods. Like the Mods say, when things go a bit overboard, either end it or take it to PMs.

Respectfully, the only other person who behaved like AGD, i.e, threatening people with physical violence was Ian Wagner, who was banned permanently. He also had good days and bad days, he brought some good, knowledgeable stuff to the table sometimes, and at other times not. Saying to one of the mods he hoped his family died is unacceptable, I think we all agree. I just happen to think threatening to turn up on Phil's doorstep and beat him up is in the same vein.

I don't think either Ian or Andrew are "evil" people. They just have anger problems. People are saying Phil spread bad vibes by posting unpopular and untenable opinions, but surely behaving in an abusive and aggressive manner is worse.

My main point is, drbeachboy, you and I can disagree politely, it can even get a bit heated, but neither of us are about to start threatening to beat each other up (at least I hope not). AGD seems to think he is indispensable to this board and therefore above the normal rules of civility.

I don't want to single anyone out here but generally speaking people with "anger problems" who are using the internet as a means of venting probably need to take a few steps back and reevaluate the situation.  If someone is angry enough at themselves, someone else or the world at large that they are using an internet post board as means of purging, perhaps they should turn off the computer for a bit and give some serious think time to actually dealing with whatever is causing their "anger problems" to begin with.  In a positive and socially acceptable way obviously.

Maybe we can have an "Anger" thread and a "Blame" thread, and a "He's not a very nice man" thread – even an "I'm telling my dad" thread – so that the MIC thread can feature stuff like, uh, maybe boxed sets?

I try very hard not to let hiding behind the computer screen affect how I interact with people on it. I've had a few moments here and there, but on the whole I try to react here how I would as if you were sitting directly in front of me. I have to admit that this place has been the toughest place to practice that philosophy. When I first found this forum I thought it would it be the easiest place to communicate with other like minded BB fans, but, oh contraire, some of us are far more different and complex than I ever imagined.

But there are a few like that in every community.  You just have to get on with it.

One thing worth noting about this particular forum is at least we have some semblance of intelligence and aren't all genuflecting at the feet of our heroes.  That is something not to be taken for granted when broadly evaluating fan forums across the internet.

I would imagine it'll be closer in size to the GV/PS boxes. After all, the Smile box had to be configured around the vinyl, which this won't be.

Am I right in remembering the Spector box (of CD's) some years back was LP shaped? Quite a few boxed sets are.

It was, but it's the only one I know of. Pretty much all the box sets I own (obviously not a representative sample, but...) are either the size of the PS/GV boxes (like the two Nuggets boxes), book sized (Monkees Music Box, Zombie Heaven, Randy Newman box), or CD height (usually boxes of replica albums).

I condone all of sweetdudejim's comments.  And, since we're talking about those post-Schmilsson albums, Duit On Mon Dei is utterly Van Dyke Parks-tastic, and not only that, but he was in full steel-pans-on-everything flower at the time, so even the record's weaker material is rendered somewhat wondrous by his magical arrangement touches.  (Though Perry Botkin Jr did the orchestral arrangements, as VDP will be quick to remind you if you ever ask him about it.)

(Furthermore, going back to the earlier stuff, I think that Nilsson Sings Newman is the most immaculate 26-minute album ever released.)

I've ordered a copy of the Nilsson box, despite owning all of the previously released stuff on CD already.  I totally needed a fifth copy of The Point anyway.

I know that at this point the boxed set's concept and contents will be all settled, but I can't resist chiming in with what I feel it ought to be.

To me there are only two logical options for a Beach Boys boxed set at this point: "Rarities only" or "definitve collection of all the essential stuff, released or unreleased"

A rarities only collection would be nice, but as others have pointed out the disappointing sales of Hawthorne and Endless Harmony etc will have made that seem risky. Though it's possible those compilations failed because the time wasn't right, or because they were poorly marketed, or because they fell between two stools and made no attempt to be definitive.
Also, personally, I feel that you need the hits and non-rarities as well, not just for commercial reasons, but to put the rairties into their proper perspective. It's like if you buy an anthology of Lewis Carroll you don't complain that "Allice's Adventures in Wonderland" is included, even if you already have ten copies of it. If I ever make a Beach Boys compilation it seems like there's something missing if "California Girls" isn't on it.

As for a definitive collection, I feel 6 CDs is just not enough. (I completely disagree with Andrew Hickey (I think it was him) who argued that all the really worthwhile Beach Boys songs could be fitted onto 6 CDs easily. I'd like to see him try.) At least, it's not enough if the set is intended to be an improvement of "Good Vibrations". "Good Vibrations" did the job of a 6 CD set excellently, (apart from the Brian's unfortunate decision to veto "Let Him Run Wild"). If you want to improve on it, you need more space to add more songs. You can't go around omitting too much stuff that was on it, because most of those songs deserved to be on there. If you only want to revise it a little here and there, say adding "Wouldn't it be nice live again" here, dropping "Our team" there, then why not simply call it "Good Vibrations: revised anniversary edition"?

Teh answer to that is, of course, that a "new" boxed set would look more enticing and sell better. But I fear that in attempting to make the new set different enough from GV, they will have thrown out too many babies with the bathwater. For example, just because "It's Over Now" and "Still I Dream Of It" no longer have that "Previously unreleased" status, doesn't mean they should be left out of any new collection that claims to represent the best of the Beach Boys

I am completely appalled by the other option people have been advocating, the boxed set that includes the hits to pull in the great unwashed, and includes the rarities for the diehard fans, but leaves out everything else: no album tracks, no non-charting b-sides. I understand the pragmatic reasoning behind such an idea, but really, it's a cynical notion that would produce a very weird and disjointed collection. "Surfin' USA" and unreleased writing session from a KTSA writing session but no "Busy Doin' Nothin'? A boxed set only makes artistic sense if it attempts to represent a band at its best, showing all sides of it's greatness. So what if you already have most of these tracks, don't you want a collection that you can send new curious would-be-fans to, a collection that will fairly represent the band for generations to come? If so, do you really think "Let Him Run Wild" or "Catch A Wave" should be omitted?


So, as I say, everything is already set in stone by now, but if anyone asked me what my dream career-spanning Beach Boys set would be, it would include

All the great songs from the singles and albums, omitting only the filler. (Example of filler: "Carls' Big Chance". Example of a song that is NOT filler: "No-Go Showboat".)
All the great previously released rarities, so they don't end up being only available on out-of-print collections
All the great previously bootlegged songs. (I don't have any bootlegs, except a few poor quality youtube downloads.)
All the great previously unbootlegged, unavailable songs. (including anything worthwhile from the 2012 outtakes)
 
By "great" I mean, a song that thrills and improves the life of the listener, making him or her truly grateful to have it as a part of their life. Who is to decide which songs fit this criteria? Why, I'd be happy to do it, since you ask.

NO alternate takes, mixes, mono mixes, stereo mixes, binaural mixes, instrumental mixes, a cappella mixes. Waste of space. (heresy warning #2) I have a tin ear and I can't tell if I'm listening to mono or stereo and I couldn't care less. I just want the songs. The released album/single version is nearly always the best.

NO live versions unless it's a radically different arrangement from the studio version, or a song that doesn't exist in a decent studio version. I don't understand the obsession with getting live versions. I nearly always prefer the studio version. (Heresy warning #2) I'm not even a fan of "In Concert" or "live in London", though I do like "Concert" for its otherwise unavailable cover versions.

Oh, OK. Make that SPARING live versions in concession to the wishes of nearly everyone else on this board.

SPARING use of material between 1979 and 2012. Unless there's great unreleased stuff I'm unaware of.


This fantasy box set would require AT LEAST 10 discs. And for a band as great, popular, and important as The Beach Boys I don't see why that's too much to ask. Especially if Nilsson gets 17. 
 

The GV box only had four CDs of different songs. If you drop all the duplicated songs on the fifth disc (most of which are not hugely necessary, and IIRC some of which are now on the Pet Sounds or Smile boxes anyway) and add two more discs of unreleased tracks in its place, then you'd have a much better set.

And I don't think I said all the worthwhile tracks could fit onto six CDs, but that I think all the *essential* tracks could fit onto six CDs (certainly if you don't count solo albums). Something like, say, Salt Lake City is quite a nice track, so it's definitely worthwhile, but I would never say it was essential.

It'd be a pretty good guess to assume that there won't be any more elaborate box sets containing a significant number of rarities or unreleased material for many years to come after the release of Made In California. If ever. However, the Beach Boys will continue to be a big name and legendary group for decades to come (at least for the real deal of music fans), so who knows. Also, we still don't know how much unreleased stuff exactly there is going to be on the new box set, right? Or did I miss something? :-X

We don't know exactly how much, but I've heard from a few people who've seen the tracklist (some post here, others don't) that it's somewhere between two and three CDs worth, including most of the tracks we'd hope for and one or two that we're not expecting.

(No, I don't know any more than that. No, I don't have any great insider contacts. Yes, those people might be spinning me a line...)

In defense of Nilsson, his box set is a collection of all of his RCA solo albums. So it's pretty much those 14 albums plus a few scattered bonus tracks, and then a few discs of oddities and rarities. So as far as unreleased material getting "respect", I think The Beach Boys got Harry beat.

The only thing I'm desperate to hear, but doubt will make the box, is the alternate versions of "Children Were Raised" and "Great Shape" from the Durry Parks acetates. If they're not in Great Shape, soundwise, I care not.

I know, there's about as much chance of that as there is of a Glen Miller Orchestra reunion, but one can hope.

Maybe some big hearted philanthropist bought the disks and donated them to Capitol. Maybe that's one of the reasons for the hold up.

Brrr, i shudder when i read stuff like this. I live for this kind of material and i am wishing and hoping and praying that the box set is filled to the brim with backing tracks, vocals only mixes, and alternate versions. Actually, my dream Beach Boys box set, other than a really solid, maybe shorter, rarities-only set would be an entire set comprised of instrumental and a cappella mixes. I would treasure that like no other worldly possession.

Also, i'm not one whose got non-BB box sets on my radar much, so i haven't kept up, but i was under the impression that the very quintessential '80s and '90s long, slim design (like the GV and PS sets) are no longer in vogue and now a thing of the past. Or do they still put out box sets like that? If so, do they still have that goofy plastic tray insert to hold all the contents in place?

In the US, copyright term for recorded music is, I believe, life of the author plus seventy years -- and that's only going to keep extending as long as Disney want to keep ownership of Mickey Mouse. In Europe, they just extended it so theoretically the next Beach Boys music to go out of copyright will be in 2033, but that's only if Universal decide they don't want to keep making money off the Beatles in 2033...

Nothing more will go out of copyright until the oldest remaining in-copyright work is still making money for someone rich.

I couldn't agree more wholeheartedly! These tracks are amazing. Much more interesting to me than the studio version of We Got Love or snippets of uncompleted songs.

Some of the later ones - Duit On Mon Dei and Sandman - are fine boozing records. The musicianship is stellar, but if you're looking for a Nilsson Sings Newman it's not there. They are pleasingly deranged.

Knnillsson is rather good, the only dud in his 70's is That's The Way It Is. But Nilsson, even at his worst, was  one of the realest sounding musicians.

Hell yeah, twice! Remember hearing this for the first time on a cassette bootleg (before CD's and Youtube) many years ago and I almost cried. And I never cry except for when somebody close to me dies. But this literally brought tears to my eyes. I doubt they can find a clearer copy; the SOT bootlegger missed it but it was on "Capitol Punishment" but is somewhat hissy and not pristine like much of the SOT stuff. I would be VERY happy if this snippet sees the light of day sometime/somewhere. Brian and The Boys were in top form here as far as harmonies. Unfortunately this part was buried in the mix and you can't really appreciate it unless you hear the acapella isolated. Just fantastic how the vocals weave in and out and Brian's falsetto over the top. I just listened to it again 5 times and I still never get tired of it.

I got a tape copy of this from a collector in the early 90's, and just sat there on the night bus for two hours on the way home, surrounded by drunks, just rewinding this session over and over with tears streaming down my face. Magic moments.
