The next installment of the Bob Dylan‘s heralded Bootleg Series will focus on the development of his electric sound in two crucial years during the ’60s.

The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12, due on Nov. 6, includes early demos, alternative versions and outtakes from a period that saw Dylan release Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde. Those sessions produced signature tracks including “Like a Rolling Stone,” “Subterranean Homesick Blues” and “Visions of Johanna.”

“At the beginning, most songs were fairly shapeless,” Dylan sideman Al Kooper says in the new issue of Rolling Stone, which will be available Friday. “Only little by little did they come together.”

Expected highlights include Bob Dylan’s early attempt at a plugged-in version of “Mr. Tambourine Man,” months prior to the Byrds crafted a breakout hit with it. A take on “Visions of Johanna” includes alternate lyrics. And the whirlwind sessions for “Like a Rolling Stone” are comprehensively explored.

There are also early Blonde on Blonde tracks featuring future members of the Band, recorded before Dylan changed direction and decided to use a group of Nashville musicians. Those sessions differed greatly from the more loosely organized Highway 61 Revisited, said Kooper, who unexpectedly found himself sitting in on organ for “Like a Rolling Stone.”

The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 will be available in three different editions: an economical two-disc size, an expanded six-disc version and a massive 18-disc package, which includes, among other things, sessions for “Like a Rolling Stone.”

Excellent. I'm excited to see the track listing. But if I'm reading correctly, this set comprises only already released tunes (albeit in alternative or working versions)? That's kind of a bummer. Some "new" songs would be fantastic.

OK, seriously, I am just becoming dumber by the day. Apparently the idea of actually checking whether there was a track listing before commenting was too far beyond me. I'd like to blame work, which has kicked my ass/brain recently. Or maybe I'm just getting fucking old and brain-dead. It's one example of idiocy after another with me these days...

But thanks, Bubbly.

Eighteen-disc version ... christ. I don' know if I'm going to go that far. But the six sure looks interesting (said the guy who just talked sh*t a week or so ago about archival releases without new material).

Some new songs would be nice, but I doubt there's any left at this point. The thing about Bob (that's sort of become a cliche) is that the working/alternate versions of his songs may as well be different songs than the versions he released, so that's something. Anyway, there's a ton of stuff here that hasn't been bootlegged (or really even known about, like the electric "Mr. Tambourine Man"). But, the extent of what's going to be included on the 18 CDs is 12 MORE CDs THAN THE 6 CD SET, so we have no idea what may show up there yet.

I only wish for more Blonde on Blonde material, but I'll probably get it on the 18 CD. And the reason I want the 18 CD is this period for Bob is rather special for me. I think Bob is quite possibly the greatest artist of the modern era, and that this period is his peak, so I'll take everything I can get. If you've never read this article (http://www.oxfordamerican.org/magazine/item/186-mystic-nights), it's a really great read about what lies on the Blonde on Blonde session tapes.

That is, if I can get my hands on the apparently "EXTREMELY LIMITED" 18 CD version. Here's hoping.

Probably close to, if not entirely, right. It's not as if we're talking about a guy who loved and lived in the studio. More likely is that whatever songs there are, are more akin to what ended up on The New Basement Tapes' album--written songs, half-songs, but either not or barely recorded.

It's too bad there isn't more written about what lies on the Blonde on Blonde session tapes.

(I might be dumb, but I amuse me sometimes.)

This looks absolutely amazing. This era of Dylan is, for me, as good as The Beach Boys from the Pet Sounds, Good Vibes, Smile era and The Beatles from Rubber Soul through Sgt. Pepper era. Some of the most amazing music ever put to tape.

Holy hell. If it's as revelatory as the Self Portrait set was, this is going to be a major treat.

what I would like best is if someone I trusted got the 18 CD set and made me a 1 CD best-of.

those snippets remind me of the versions that were used on the No Direction Home soundtrack.

Bloody hell. Man, wouldn't you love to see a Beach Boys release like that?

The Adrian Baker sessions? Wink

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

They would be good in Gitmo. They'd make anyone talk.

It's a shame they didn't put any of those 18th CD hotel recordings on the 2 or 6 disc versions. More interesting to me (especially as I have a high toleration level for dodgy sound quality).

I love the hotel tapes, especially "Rainy Afternoon". Definitely an incentive to go for the big box. There's even an heretofore unknown recording called "If I Was a King". I think we can probably expect the recordings to be cleaned up a bit for this release.

I'm probably the only Dylan fan that's not excited about this release. I feel like I've heard plenty of 65-66 Bob on the various Bootleg volumes. I've really enjoyed the last couple volumes - Another Self Portrait and Basement Tapes. Someday I would like to see them do cd's of the 1978 world tour, or the 1980 gospel tour.

Some updates for anyone who cares:

The big box is rumored to be coming out a week earlier than the other versions.

Here's two alternate takes you can listen to in full: "Sitting on a Barbed-Wire Fence (Take 2) (6/15/65)" and "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry". Not sure about the details for the latter.

Here's the YouTube video they made for the announcement (with Penn Jillette narrating): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0azcWTluaQ

Here's a short documentary on the cover for Bringing It All Back Home: http://www.vevo.com/watch/USSM21501763
(and here's the accompanying Rolling Stone article: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/see-how-bob-dylans-iconic-bringing-it-all-back-home-cover-was-made-20150929)

Here's a picture of the "leopard-print spindle" from the big box:

I know that just fills you with desire.

I gave a hint that I want the full 18 disc version for Christmas. And by "hint", I mean I specified that only 5,000 copies were ever going to be produced, that it has the complete recording session for "Like A Rolling Stone", and that I could die a happy man after listening to the complete set in one mammoth listening session. I also made the mistake of mentioning that it's $600, so I'm probably never going to get it.  Grin

I don't even have time to listen to all of that.
