I've been waiting for years for good quality photos from the booklet.
Then buy it.

Not exactly the same thing mate.  I'm an artwork nut and love all the graphics and stuff that come in these types of releases so I obviously see where PJ is coming from.  I obviously plan to buy the box set but would love to have a digital version of the booklet as well.

I already pre-ordered. But I mean I don't have the equipment to scan them. I like making desktop wallpapers and stuff with photos.

Problem is, when you scan something that's been printed, you print the litho screen too. Technically, you can't really get a high resolution image from something that's been screened at 150dpi. Additionally You get a moire pattern, which can be gotten rid of with software - it's just generally a crappy end product good for screen resolution but that's about it. That's why I was so excited that they handed out the high resolution cover art with H&V and GV for the video project. Too bad no back photo or tent shots!

To give you a general idea.

I've been waiting for years for good quality photos from the booklet.

Excellent quality bootlegged copies of the SMiLE book have been out there for years.

Even better, excellent quality copies of all of the original Frank Holmes artwork have been available. Frank Holmes even signed the prints hisself!

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

So what is everyone going to do on November 1? How are you all going to attack this cornucopia?

I've put in for paid time off November 1-2. Here's what I'm going to do:
  • Wake up at 8:00 AM, brush 'em like crazy
  • Coffee and a smoke, although hopefully I'll have kicked the latter
  • Drive to Baltimore's best record store, Soundgarden, and arrive by 9:45 AM
  • Bust down their doors when they open at 10:00
  • If anyone gets in my way, I'll go all Haloti Ngata on 'em
  • Tear out of there with the goods (just the box set), light up another smoke
  • Stare into the inner recesses of the Smile Shop, searching for enlightenment
  • Gingerly tear open the shrink wrap
  • Explore
  • Have an out of body experience
  • Dig out the book, and start browsing through
  • Cig extinguished, sit in car and listen to Surf's Up 1967
  • Start ignition, drive home in silence
  • Get home, slap on the vinyl
  • Sides 1-3 in sacred, rapt attention
  • Out to the deck for another cig and a browse through the book, planning next steps...
  • Rest of the day: total immersion
  • At some point, the postman rings the bell: yippee! My pre-ordered copy of the 2-CD version, the vinyl-only version, and a second copy (for safekeeping) of the box set!
  • Not once will I look at my cell phone
  • I will begrudgingly pause for bathroom breaks
  • Eventually, sleep
  • Dreams

I'm talking about both. The book and all the artwork from the book separately, in addition to the front and back album cover artwork slicks.

Up until now with the digital scans, the artwork available from Holmes has been the best quality in my opinion.

Wouldn't be surprised if Frank offered them again in the near future.

Wake up and be depressed that I have no money, especially not 170 to spend on a box set, and how I'm a failure in life.

So what is everyone going to do on November 1?

1. Wake up at 8:00 am still wearing my Halloween costume. (I am dressing up as Cassandra from Wayne's World. My girlfriend is going to be Wayne and her sister is going to be Garth.)
2. Take off my costume, clean up, go to work. (Yup, still got work... I teach Astronomy Lab.)
3. Finish up my second class around 4:00 pm and run to my apartment! (I only live two blocks from campus.)
4. Check my mail (cross my fingers that I get it that day.)
5. Have my girlfriend come over (she wants to hear it!!)
6. Smoke.
7. Play disc 1.
8. Play disc 2.
9. etc.

I can sympathize. When the Pet Sounds sessions box set came out I was between jobs, didn't end up buying it (or even hearing it) until 1998. This time around I'm in better shape. I still sweat the occasional paycheck, but I'm a shrewd budgeter, and I've squirrled away $400 for this very purpose since I started saving for it in March.

As for failing in life, yeah, I can feel you there too, but once you get close to 40 you just learn to live with it. Smiley

In November, 1973, I attended a Beach Boys concert in Sacramento, CA. After the concert, we walked around the back of the building to watch the band members get into their limos and maybe get an autograph. One of them was Al. Standing next to me, I recognized the owner of a record store that sold used and collectible records a couple of blocks over. He held up a Smiley Smile album and asked Al to sign it. Al stood up and looked over the top of the limo, took the album and looked at it for a long time. He told the guy that he'd never heard the album before! What?? The store owner told Al that he had another copy and Al's limo followed the record store owner down to his shop, where he opened it (at around 11 o'clock at night) to get another Smiley Smile album for him.

Al was serious! I kid you not. He said he'd never heard the entire Smiley Smile album since its release six years before.

Thanks for sharing that, Mikie...yep, that is one weird story.  Now I'm especially curious to hear his thoughts about it (or maybe he hasn't listened to it yet).

Yeah, that's the one part missing from my plan. Oh well, smurf it.

6. Smoke.

I still don't have the Pet Sounds box set. I just haven't ever really found a good excuse to blow the $60.00 on it. But I just blew $170 on the five disc SMiLE set, so figure that one out.  Grin

I plan to:

1. Put the entire 5 discs on my mp3 player.

2. Go into my room at night.

3. Shut the door and turn off the lights.

4. Listen to the entire 5 discs on high quality headphones.

5. Set volume to 11. I want the group singing Our Prayer directly into my brain.

6. Give the music my full attention and not even glance at the booklet.

7. Probably cry like a baby. Multiple times.
