Title: BB Historical Sites Thread. (Please Exclude Current PRIVATE Address's)
Post by: Pretty Funky on May 18, 2008, 05:19:28 PM
Please pardon the grand title, but I mentioned last week the possibility of a link listing Beach Boy locations that may be of interest to fans planning trips to the LA area. Thought if I started a thread others may like to add to it, maybe tell of there visits and give some tips, this may become useful to others planning their journey.
Feel free to add anything of interest however I think private homes of various band members and associates should be off limits. Thanks!

Two locations I am wondering about. I remember reading a story on Jeff Foskett where he tells of meeting Brian for the first time I think in the early 70s and he mentioned passing the glass work as seen on the 'Wild Honey' album cover. Where was this home and would the work be visible from the street?
Also where would the disused pier be as seen in the Tobler book pages 45-48. I have seen these pictures referred to as may be a Coca Cola shoot.

Thank you for starting this thread as I'm sure alot of fans will refer to it before their LA trip.

Taken from JonStebbin's book on Dennis:

Dennis' house (where Manson, et al stayed):  14400 W. Sunset Blvd.

House where Dennis lived with Karen: 31284 Broad Beach Road, Malibu

House where Dennis lived with Shawn: 6120 Trancas Canyon Road

Hopefully, I will return from my own trip with more places to check out!!

That was at the Bellagio house.

Some others:

1) Brian's other house:  1448 Laurel Way, Beverly Hills

2) Dennis boat was at Marina Del Ray, Marquessa Way

3) The firehouse seen in the GV promo is LAFD Fire Station 27, located on 1355 North Cahuenga Boulevard in Hollywood.

4) Dead Man’s Curve (the spot referred to in the song) is located on Sunset near Groverton Place, (just north of the UCLA campus).  Just east on Sunset, near the intersection at Whittier Drive is where Jan Berry had the terrible accident in his Corvette Stingray 427

5) Goldstar Recording Studio was at 6252 Santa Monica Blvd (just E. of Vine on the S. side of the street). The location is now a strip mall (not a strip joint) though.

Radio Recorders, corner of Santa Monica and Orange.

Former RCA studios (Where the definitive Dance, Dance, Dance was recorded): 6363 Sunset, now a Film School.

On the north side of Sunset, between Gower and El Centro is CBS studios, which used to house Columbia's/CBS' recording studio where the Beach Boys cut many vocals 1965-1967.  That is just a short walk from Western and

United recorders, now Ocean Way 6050 Sunset.

On the big cement island in the middle of the corner of Crescent Heights and Sunset was Pandora's Box, teen night club where the Boys did some early shows.

I really could write a book.

And that is, as I understand it,  is where Brian met Marilyn and her sister Diane Rovelle.

Here are a few more:

Murry's High School (and I guess Mike's Mom's and Audree's as well ) George Washington High 180th St.  and Denker

1928 family home of Audree (Korthof) Wilson 1829 W. 84th st L.A.

Buddy Wilson's  1929 residence 9722 S. Figueroa  L.A.

Audree and Murry's  first home together (married March 26, 1938) 613 ½ w. 8th st. L.A. near the downtown campus of Pepperdine.  They moved from here to the Harvard address.

Centinela Hospital Inglewood - Birthplace of  Brian Wilson

A.B.L.E.  4969 Firestone Blvd. Southgate

(Most of the above were obtained from one of my favorite books 'The Nearest Faraway Place').

For Jan and Dean fans (and also Eddie Cochran and Alvin and the Chipmunks fans):
Liberty Records  6920 sunset (just w. of highland – e. of La Brea between Mansfield and Orange) – former site now the Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse (2008)

and if you are back in in Kansas:

726 Sixth Ave. East, Hutchinson, KA.     Murry’s birthplace

On the subject, other items of interest.

Hard Rock Cafe memorabilia.

Kona. A naval officer jacket with the Pet Sounds badge on the sleeve and a guitar hangs on the walls in Kona from the most popular of surf bands, The Beach Boys.

Key West. A five-page typed letter to Carl Wilson from his father, Murry Wilson and Carl's 1963 Fender Jaguar. It was one of Carl's main live and studio guitars in the mid-60's, the Beach Boys' most successful period.

Belo Horizonte. Hawaiian print shirt worn on stage and signed by Dennis Wilson.

Honolulu. Brian Wilson's white Fender jazz bass.

I am sure Brian donated a old family upright piano to NY years ago and think that is in storage.

Does the Hard Rock Café memorabilia stay in one location, tho? One of my family members took a photo of Brian's bass in the New Orleans Hard Rock back in the '90s. It could be a different bass, tho.

Doubt Brian would recognise the place - it's been extensively remodelled.

From here...

Additional info on Brian’s Crenshaw Park apt.
In August 1962, Brian Wilson moved out of the Wilson family home in Hawthorne and into a 1 bedroom apt in The Crenshaw Park Apartments, located less than two miles away at 10800 Crenshaw Blvd. Inglewood, CA 90303. His apt. was in the northeast corner of this building, Apt #29.

Great thread as I'm planning a California trip next summer! What about the rest of California? All the places that's namedropped in Al's songs - Big Sur, Salinas, San Simeon, Monterey, Morro Bay et c? Of course I've already found them on the map, but what's of importance to see there (BB or non-BB related)?

Nice idea, but the target audience for a book like that can't be large at all, which is probably why it hasn't come out (yet). Will still have my hopes up, though!

There are ways to have books printed on a by-order basis, like from places like this: https://www.createspace.com/

Today, the guy who's gradually piecing together our new kitchen over a period of many months, invited me and my better half to accompany him to this warehouse out in the country to choose the tiles. To my great joy, this amazing place full of gargoyles and weird sh*t imported from Italy and elsewhere at great expense turned out to be in Baambrugge, the place to where the Beach Boys and entourage moved en masse to record the album Holland many moons ago.

Poking around while my wife examined tiles, I found hidden away from the prying eyes of the general public this roomful of musty electrical equipment. Damn, it must have been lying there gathering dust for at least 30 years...

Well, what would your conclusion be?

Stumbled on this story.

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/635154125/Beach-Boys-are-fun-fun-fun-friends.html

Turns out the location of the shoot is in Utah. The Saltair Pavillion.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saltair,_Utah

http://bonnevillemariner.wordpress.com/2009/08/19/old-saltair-ruins-are-all-that-remain-of-coney-island-of-the-west/

Quote

This dichotomy is best illustrated by album art from a 1967 Beach Boy’s record.  Photos show the band hanging out at a decaying Saltair II.  My favorite shot is of the boys balancing atop a tall collection of pilings that once served as a dock.  Those pilings still stand, and given their isolation, they probably will forever.
The unknown guy is Bill Hesterman, a radio DJ at the time. Also on the cover of Vol 19 of Unsurpassed Masters.

If you spend just a few minutes on a search engine, you can find the exact street address of where someone lives currently. :)   (Then again, one thing I found said that said person looking to sell; don't know if they actually did sell it though...)

I guess I'm not as good at searching, because it took me a while to find it. Nice looking, but it's overpriced which is probably why it's not selling; or maybe the Indian migration is over and they've bought all the houses on that street they want.

Hey Guitarfool2002. You seem to be the man for cutting and pasting pictures. Any chance of adding some shots to some of the sites listed on this thread? Should only take a few weeks out of your life! :lol

I'm sorry I missed this thread until now, I would have replied sooner! I'll see what I can do, depending on how much I'm able. The GV film was a labor of love, I've been obsessed with info about that thing for some time and the flood of info that week was incredible.

Always like the 'then and now shots' myself!

Look forward to seeing any results. :thumbsup

Here's a cool video of the Turtles bouncing around outside of Pandora's Box (I assume the same one as Brian and Marilyn fame?) which I stumbled onto the other day and thought was semi-relevant!

Long Beach Civic Auditorium. Site of the first concert New Years eve 1961. Site now the Long Beach Arena??? More info please.

The original Long Beach Civic Auditorium was demolished in 1975.  The Arena was built a decade or so earlier, adjacent and attached to the old auditorium, but the auditorium was then torn down to build the current convention center.  The arena is still there but there's nothing left of the original auditorium.  Old photos for anyone interested:

as it would have been in '61, the auditorium jutted out into rainbow lagoon

later, with current arena, lagoon being filled in

Nice picture H, I was standing in the same spot back in February, did you manage to find the monument ok? I ask as google maps has it a block away from where it actually is.

We found it fine, although it is a little tricky.  Fortunately, we were familiar enough with the general area that it wasn't too tough to sort of track the freeway.

By the way, to anybody who thinks it's a bad neighborhood--it's not.  It's a very nice, pretty quiet neighborhood, especially considering it's proximity to the freeway.  But if you think it's a bad neighborhood, you are a sheltered rich person.

Also where would the disused pier be as seen in the Tobler book pages 45-48. I have seen these pictures referred to as may be a Coca Cola shoot.

Stumbled on this story.

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/635154125/Beach-Boys-are-fun-fun-fun-friends.html

Turns out the location of the shoot is in Utah. The Saltair Pavillion.

Thanks to the KNAK Radio Spot Thread for this additional info.

Are you talking about the near 90 degree turn just east of Groverton, right at Westwood Plaza?  I read somewhere that the actual stretch of road was altered after an accident involving Mel Blanc.  Any truth to this?

Never mind, I found it.  pmugghc's description is about 2.5 miles off.  The curve is just west of Whittier.

Not... exactly. Murry may have lived there, but he & Audree separated not long after they moved from Hawthorne to Whitter. Murry bought her a house a block or two from where he lived.
