That's Why God Made the Radio is the forthcoming twenty-ninth studio album by American rock band The Beach Boys, scheduled for release on June 5, 2012 on Capitol. Produced by Brian Wilson, the album was recorded to coincide with the band's 50th anniversary, and is the first to feature original material since the release of Summer in Paradise in 1992. The album is also the first to feature guitarist and backing vocalist David Marks since the release of Little Deuce Coupe in 1963.

Preceded by the single "That's Why God Made the Radio", the album's overall aesthetic is said to be similar to that of Pet Sounds (1966) and Sunflower (1970).

Flatulence is the expulsion through the rectum of a mixture of gases that are byproducts of the digestion process of mammals and other animals. The medical term for the mixture of gases is flatus, informally known as a fart, or simply (in American English) gas. The gases are expelled from the rectum in a process colloquially referred to as "passing gas", "breaking wind" or "farting". Flatus is brought to the rectum by the same peristaltic process which causes feces to descend from the large intestine. The noises commonly associated with flatulence are caused by the vibration of the anal sphincter, and occasionally by the closed buttocks.

Nitrogen, the main constituent of air, is the primary gas released during flatulence, along with carbon dioxide. The lesser component gases methane and hydrogen are flammable, and so flatus containing adequate amounts of these can be ignited. However, not all humans produce flatus that contains methane. For example, in one study of the feces of nine adults, only five of the samples contained archaea capable of producing methane. Similar results are found in samples of gas obtained from within the rectum.

In late 2010 reports began to circulate that the surviving members of the Beach Boys would reunite for a 50th Anniversary tour and album. Despite some uncertainty and initial denials, on December 16, 2011 it was announced that Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks would reunite for a new album and 50th anniversary tour in 2012 that would include a performance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in April.

Wilson and Love discussed the upcoming album and tour in a interview on February 16, 2012. The duo said the album was halfway done with Wilson doing most of the writing and stating that all of the songs will flow into each other. The album will end with a Pet Sounds- and SMiLE-inspired suite. The suite, originally six tracks ended up to be the final three tracks on the album, "From There and Back Again", "Pacific Coast Highway" and "Summer's Gone". One song "I'd Go Anywhere" was left off as it was unfinished, along with a couple other tracks.  The title track, "That's Why God Made the Radio" is considered by Wilson to be one of their best.

The gas released during a flatus event frequently has an unpleasant odor. For many years, this was thought to be due to skatole and indole, which are byproducts of the digestion of meat. However, gas chromatography testing in 1984 revealed that sulfur-containing compounds, such as methanethiol, hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell) and dimethyl sulfide, were also responsible for the smell.

The incidence of odoriferous compounds in flatulence emissions increases from herbivores, such as cattle, through omnivores to carnivorous species. Such odor can also be caused by the presence of large numbers of microflora bacteria and/or the presence of feces in the rectum.

According to Bruce Johnston, all but the title track are originals and there are no guest musicians on the album. Each band member sings lead on at least one of the songs while Johnston contributed one song titled, "She Believes in Love Again", a song he wrote in 1985 (and was recorded and released by the band on that year's The Beach Boys); however he said he was unsure if the song would make the final cut. Johnston compares the album to one of the band's least-successful albums but fan favorite, Sunflower while Al Jardine said the album is "very lush, very PetSound-ing".

The major components of the flatus, which are odorless, by percentage are:

    Nitrogen: 20–90%
    Hydrogen: 0–50%
    Carbon dioxide: 10–30%
    Oxygen: 0–10%
    Methane: 0–10%

Flatus is brought to the rectum by the same process which causes feces to descend from the large intestine, and may cause a similar feeling of urgency and discomfort. Researchers investigating the role of sensory nerve endings in the anal canal did not find them to be essential for retaining fluids in the anus, and instead speculate that their role may be to distinguish between flatus and feces, thereby helping detect a need to defecate or to signal the end of defecation.

Many of the songs have a considerable history: "That's Why God Made the Radio" was written by Brian Wilson, Jim Peterik, Joe Thomas and Larry Millas back in summer 1998. The track "Summer's Gone" was originally meant to be the final song on the final Beach Boys album, according to Brian, although he has since changed his mind. Songs like "Isn't It Time", "Shelter" and "The Private Life of Bill and Sue" were written for the new album. The song "Daybreak Over the Ocean" was originally recorded in 1978 by Mike Love for his first, as yet unreleased solo album, First Love (and also re-recorded for his equally unreleased solo album of a few years ago, Mike Love Not War a.k.a. Unleash The Love: this is the version - with additional BB vocals - that appears on the album).

The sound varies depending on the tightness of the sphincter muscle and velocity of the gas being propelled, as well as other factors, such as water and body fat. The auditory pitch (sound) of the flatulence outburst can also be affected by the anal embouchure. Among humans, flatulence occasionally happens accidentally, such as incidentally to coughing or sneezing or during orgasm; on other occasions, flatulence can be voluntarily elicited by tensing the rectum or "bearing down" on stomach or bowel muscles and subsequently relaxing the anal sphincter, resulting in the expulsion of flatus.

The first single from the album, "That's Why God Made the Radio" made its national radio debut April 25, 2012 on ESPN's Mike and Mike in the Morning. It was released to the band's YouTube channel later that same day, with accompanying lyrics. In addition, the song has been released and is now available as a single in digital outlets such as iTunes and Amazon.

The band has appeared on various television shows talk shows throughout the tour performing the song including an hour long performance and interview segment on the shopping channel QVC in which 14,000 copies of the album were sold. QVC will give away an exclusive eleven track greatest hits CD with the purchase of the album. The hits CD will not be available anywhere else.

Rusty trombone is a euphemism for a sexual act in which a man stands with his knees and back slightly bent, with feet at least shoulder width apart in order to expose the anus. The other partner typically kneels behind the man and performs anilingus while reaching up beneath the testicles or around the body to manually administer rapid up and down motions of the penis, mimicking the motions of a trombone player. The act is defined primarily by the physical orientation of the partners and the combination of analingus with manual penile stimulation; however, other positions and variations are possible.

As of late May, the title track and "Isn't It Time" have been the only songs from the album to be performed live.
