Title: The "What Music Did You Buy Today?" Thread
Post by: Peadar 'Big Dinner' O'Driscoll on January 27, 2014, 09:51:15 AM
So hopefully this hasn't been done before, I tried searching and sorting by replies but didn't find anything.

Anyway, how about a thread for posting our most recent physical purchase(s) whether it be vinyl/cd or whatever? so maybe at the weekend or whenever you might go to your local record shop or shop online and buy something and maybe post a picture of the stuff you bought and even the shop (if not online or when it arrives, if online). I buy stuff pretty much every weekend so presume some others do too.

I had a bit of a splurge today which is why I thought about making this thread.

Two from discogs arrived in the post and then I went out and collected 8 records from a website called http://www.recordsale.de/ which has a pick point at a shop called Leila M (not posting pic as its just a pick up point as far I know for recordsale.de) here in Berlin. Germany.

so here is the list for today:

LP: John Hartford,Housing Project
LP: John Hartford,Gentle on my Mind & Other Originals
LP:Harry Nilsson,Knnillssonn:
LP:Slim Whitman,Slim Whitman Sings:
LP:Microdisney,Crooked Mile:
LP:Steve Earle,Exit 0:
LP:Roy Brown,Hard Luck Blues:
LP:The Everly Brothers,It's Everly Time:
LP:Glen Campbell,Wichita Lineman:
LP:The Dubliners,Seven Drunken Nights:

and hopefully the image works...

I didn't buy anything today, but if it interests you I bought the Spirit of America compilation on iTunes (just for Break Away) last week.
It's not a physical release, but that's all I have right now.

I spent $12 on a six pack of small tweezers yesterday.

I actually do like the idea of this thread.

The most recent thing to arrive at my home is Alex Chilton's Free Again: The "1970" Sessions. I haven't had a chance to listen yet, but I have high hopes for it. He was in between in the Box Tops and about to join Big Star. His writing must have been flourishing. There's even a few interesting covers: "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "Sugar Sugar."

When I went to an actual record store, I bought a bunch of CDs (I'm afraid my record player doesn't appear to be in great repair).
I bought:

The Kinks - Muswell Hillbillies & Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One
Captain Beefheart - Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)
Scott Walker - Scott
Lee Hazlewood - Something Special
Big Star - Live
The Beach Boys - Surfer Girl/Shut Down Volume 2 twofer

Thanks guys, lots of hilarious replies to work through there  :lol

I'm a huge big star/chilton fan and bought the 1970 release from Omnivore when it came out. While its not up to Big Star standard IMO, its got some really cool stuff on it. I also bought the recent release on bar none of Chiltons "Electricity by Candlelight" which I love though I can see its for obsessives due to rec quality, its got 3 BB covers including "Solar System".

Lee Hazlewood is a guy I have just recently been getting into. I got the LHI years double lp which was beautifully put together by light in the attic. Getting some more Lee soon.

I'm terrible, but the last physical thing for me would be TWGMTR and TSS at the same time back almost two years ago when TWGMTR was brand new. I'm assuming we're limiting ourselves to music.

I bought almost no music between maybe 2006 and 2010 as it was all about the file sharing but I really missed the record shop experience and building a collection. I started just buying vinyl from then on and eh....cant seem to stop now... 8)

I just bought my first pair of glasses today.

They have tonight helped me to better read the back cover notes of a mid 70's Australian Vinyl Edition of The Beach Boys Christmas album that I bought last Sunday - it's near mint, so pretty happy with that.

I gave it a test playing on the weekend, but it was 38 degrees celsius (100 F), so when Frosty came on, it was a bit of a mind-frack.

Very nice. I got two Christmas albums in December (Smokey Robinson & the Miracles Christmas +  A Motown Christmas double lp) but never got round to listening to them before Christmas was over. Cant bring myself to listen to them now that its January.

I'm a huge fan, too (if it wasn't obvious :P). I haven't gotten around to listening to Radio City yet, but #1 Record and Third/Sister Lovers are indispensable records for me. Honestly some of the best music that's been made. In fact, I just listened to #1 Record today. It's almost like a place I can escape to and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.
I love Third/Sister Lovers very much. It's one of the records I listen to most often.

I like Chilton's solo work, too (and "I Am the Cosmos" by Chris Bell is one of my favorite songs; if you haven't heard it - you probably have - it's a wonderful song). I also listened to A Man Called Destruction this morning. It's a fine record, but I can't help but feel like he could have been doing so much better.
I've been waiting to buy Free Again for a while and Omnivore put up a deal during their Christmas sales. Apparently, they found a box of the limited EP they made for "All We Ever Got from Them Was Pain." Has the original mix on one side and a demo version on the other side. With that, I just had to finally buy it.

I've also been trying to find Bach's Bottom and Like Flies on Sherbert for a while. They seem like good, interesting albums, but they're tough ones to find.

Yeah, Lee is pretty great.  I'm glad that LitA is putting out the new Lee reissues. I bought the box set they put out not too long ago. The packaging is lovely: there's stories from people who knew him, liner notes for his four albums that are included, bios on all of the artists who were signed to LHI, and the photos are great and plentiful - including photos of LHI's entire discography.
The music is great, also. Like I mentioned, there's four Lee albums plus a decent amount of his unreleased material and all the singles that were released from the period. Then, there's also two other discs of songs from LHI artists, like the International Submarine Band, Last Friday's Fire, Don Randi, a one-off supergroup with Glen Campbell, etc..

Some really cool stuff.

You gotta listen to Radio City asap. I find it impossible to pick a favourite between no 1 rec, radio city and sister/3rd. I got the record store day tape box release of 3rd a couple of years back which is fantastic.

I also quite liked the "in space" record from a few years back, kinda like a cross between big star and Chiltons more slack solo approach. I found Bach's Bottom and Like Flies on Sherbert at a record fair/flea market a few years back. I really like BB, "like flies" is one I don't listen to as much though I like it.

Love Chris Bell solo stuff too. I was reading through his lyrics recently and hadn't realised quite how much he was getting into the reborn christian stuff

Have you checked out the "nothing can hurt me" doc yet?

I've been wanting to listen to Radio City for quite some time now, but I haven't really found the right time to do it yet. Same thing with Nothing Can Hurt Me. I've been wanting to watch for a while and it's even on Netflix yet. But, I haven't found the right time to sit down and watch. I definitely plan on getting around to watching it sometime.
That release of Third is pretty cool. You're lucky you were able to get your hands on it.

I've been wondering whether on not I should check out In Space. It seems like reviews are pretty indifferent about it, but, if you say so, I'll give it a listen.

I like Chris Bell's stuff, too. I've only listened to a few tracks here and there (I've got the I Am the Cosmos release from a few years back) and the title song and "You and Your Sister" are fantastic songs. He's definitely under appreciated when it comes to his role in Big Star. He was just as important, if not more important, as Alex in creating Big Star and their sound. Nice to see people are coming around to see that nowadays.

I love the first song "Dony" - Its got a classic Big Star feel while "Turn my back on the sun" is a cool pop song which recycles the "WIBN" opening. Good bit of filler on the album too.

Recent vinyl purchases:

Louis Armstrong - in concert 1956
Frank Sinatra - Strangers in the Night
2001 A Space Odyssey soundtrack
Jefferson Airplane - Takes Off

and an Otto Klemperer conducted Beethoven's Symphony No.7 which has yet to arrive.

Recent digital:

Nada Surf - Let Go
Elliott Smith - Xo

and U2's Invisible (free download today) - not very good...I hope the album has better cuts than this.

The Walker Brothers: Portrait
The Temptations: A Taste of Honey and other favorites

Arrived just as the shop (Q Tip Records - Berlin) was closing so just grabbed these quickly. Been here a few times though and its a really cool place. Will be back for a better look soon.

I just buy everything music related off amazon these days unless an ebay or discogs seller can match the price. My end of month payday splurge consisted of

1/ Syd Barrett - Opel.  A couple of stunning performances aside this was mainly a barrel scraping effort.
2/ Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Let Love In.   I don't know why it took me so long to get into these guys.
3/ Ken Nordine - Word Jazz.    Interesting but not quite as musical based as I hoped it would be.
4/ (DON'T LAUGH) William Shatner - The Transformed Man.    I'm not sure if this is really good or really, really bad.
5/ Brand X - Unorthodox Behaviour.  Going to check this out today.
6/ Genesis - Abcab.  Still in the post and two albums featuring Phil Collins in a row!! Hang my head in shame.

I disagree. For what it is, it's quite a good compilation. Great originals include Opel and Dolly Rocker. Also, it's got an excellent version of Dark Globe, and the best version of Clowns and Jugglers (originally released as Octopus).
Throw in Bob Dylan Blues, Rhamadan, and the unreleased Pink Floyd songs Scream Thy Last Scream and Vegetable Man, and you've got yourself an album just as essential as The Madcap Laughs and Barrett!

Amanda Hart scores again!!! :lol You live in some kind of BB collectors Eldorado, the stuff you come across. Nice find, v envious - such a great album and would be rather a treat to hear on vinyl.

I today chanced upon the Japanese 1975 vinyl pressing of Summer Days (which I'm listening to now) - while no biggie I'm sure, I did find some mirth courtesy of the translation losses on the accompanying lyric sheet.

I know it's hardly new/s for many (there's even a dead thread here (and I'm guessin' a blog or website somewhere coverin' the followin'), but here's a quick couple of favs;

Salt Lake City; "And the way the kids, tuck so cool,  is an out of sight thing - and the number one, Male fishin' makes the, town really slick, Yea"

Amusement Parks; "at first you'll be a chicken after jerkin' a ride"

Cal Girls - "I've been all around this cryptin' world"

Next up - an 80s untitled pressing of Hollywood Dream by Thunderclap Newman

Eh, it's just mostly obsessive searching, and making friends with the store owners so they'll know what you'll like. I haven't had a chance to spin it yet, but with the additional 5" of snow we got yesterday, I'm expecting most of my clients to cancel today, so I might find myself with free time.

Those translations are a riot, btw

Cool, I got the gatefold of this (UAS-5571) a few years back but it sadly (along with a lot of other stuff) got water damaged while I was away on holiday. On the bright side I bought the American Spring Plus (see for miles) LP with some of the insurance money.

Yes I've played it several times since, it's a classic.

I just got this in the mail.

It's a mixture of poetry set to BBC Radioworkshop effects and pagan style folk, that schools used to play for children to dance to in drama/music lessons in the 1970s/80s. It's an acquired taste I'm guessing.

I've been listening to the Deluxe Village Green I just got in the mail.

Who's singing on this alternative version of Village Green. It sounds like it could be Dave, but might be someone else. Pete???

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ulCNQ4JwS4

No it's still Ray. I believe they first cut it in 1966 during the ...Something Else days. I think this may be that version, does the cd contain any info on it Gabo?

He sounds so nasally. Yeah I know. It was recorded during the same session as Two Sisters in November 1966 (the orchestra was overdubbed in February 1967).

I find it strange how the song is so little known. IMO it's just as good (if not better) than the likes of Waterloo Sunset and You Really Got Me. Easily one of the best Kinks songs. Maybe it's the subject matter?

While not today, I bought Bob Dylan's Tempest on CD a couple of days ago. I had heard it before on release on the internet, then I just ignored and forgot about it for a while I guess.

I like how Dylan sounds like he's transforming into Tom Waits.   :lol

The new Half Price Books in Schuamburg was good to me yesterday.

Still Cruisin' LP - Like new, looks untouched. I don't think I'd even seen a vinyl copy for sale in a store before. Oddly enough, they also had a CD copy for sale, so someone must have dumped off their collection :lol

Surf's Up LP - Original issue with poster, also looks untouched. I hadn't picked this up before because I knew I would be able to find a cheaper copy then what some of the record stores that cater to collectors wanted for it. I paid $6.99 for this copy. Patience pays off.

The Beach Boys In Concert Book - I never got around to ordering it online, so I was happy to run across it

I also got some great comedy LPs, including Rutland Weekend Songbook which has a 6 degrees of separation sort of Beach Boys connection. Plus a copy of The King In Yellow in paperback to feed the thing I'm currently obsessed with - although I'll wait until after the finale tonight to start reading it.

Its a pain alright. Even the ones that claim to use the Goldmine guide to grading sell vg records that are fair at best. Some sellers of course actually do sell vg as vg but its always a risk.

Today I received a message from a seller on Discogs apologizing for the inconvenience since I ordered a record over three weeks ago which never shipped. The issue was resolved recently and they plan to ship it tomorrow and offered to throw another record in for free. In a week or so I'll receive Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel and Soul & Inspiration by The Righteous Brothers.

Also I'm still waiting to hear from another seller I ordered the album Insight Out by The Association from, who said last week that they will check to see the post office to see what's going on since the record should have arrived weeks ago.

To begin with, I'm a 3-years collector of music boxes. Mostly the melodies are of Russian folk songs. The oldest (about 25 years old) that I found in my basement is wooden & represents the Khokhloma painting. So, this one plays the melody of famous "Podmoskovnye vechera" which used to be the symbol of our country abroad. Today was different: I bought the music box that when you spin it around, plays the pokemon theme (remember that anime? It's the only I liked).

Most interesting. Now and again I identify songs for people on YouTube (or try to) and very often it's the melody of a music box that they'd like identified. Sometimes the tune misses out notes or accentuates them differently, maybe because the mechanism is worn. Or the tune is played very fast or very slow... A most enjoyable occupation.

Wow, that's cool! Thanks for giving me idea, now I'm going to seek after unheard melodies. Btw, I like when a music box sounds slightly off & detuned. It gives very nice vintage effect, if not little creepy.

Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch!
The Kinks - Sleepwalker
Thelonious Monk - Monk's Blues
The Mothers of Invention - Uncle Meat, Burnt Weeny Sandwich, and Weasels Ripped My Flesh
Small Faces - Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake
Sun Ra - Cosmic Tones / Art Forms
T. Rex - Electric Warrior
XTC - Mummer, The Big Express, Nonsuch
Neil Young - After the Gold Rush

I later realized that some of these albums sort of reference each other, with Eric Dolphy's "Hat and Beard" referencing Thelonious Monk, and Frank Zappa's "Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue" referencing (of course) Eric Dolphy.

I went to a record store I've never been to before out in the 'burbs on Saturday - Hip Cat Records in Wilmette. Pretty nice place, with good prices, especially for the NM to VG+ condition everything was in. Had a ton of Beach Boys stuff, the owner said he just acquired someone's complete collection, so I picked up what I didn't already have out of it (Original mono issues of Shut Down Vol. 2 and All Summer Long). I also got a handful of promo 45s and some Dr. John LPs, because I want to start exploring more NOLA music.

I think so too! I had not heard the Schmillison In The Night before...its all stuff like Cole Porter, Irving Berlin & showtune covers with the most lush string arrangements you've ever heard - and if you listen carefully you'll hear a few bars of other songs (without the lyrics) mixed in there and there.

Except for the Billy Strange LPs these records are nearly pristine and they are probably first pressings that were taped and put away. Jackets are like new LPs without the shrink wrap!  They cost more than the $1.00 each Good will price but none were over $6 and most of them were $3-$4 each. I dont see records like this very often and will make room for them if I have to get rid of some other stuff -  ;D

Great prices! I almost never find deals like that, seems a lot easier in the US. When I look at discogs or ebay, it seems records are much cheaper there, unfortunately postage costs rule them out for me.

Saturday night, Half Price Books, on the new end cap where they've been putting out new records (which they've started selling a ton of, at least at the location nearest me) and LP box sets, a perfect copy of All Things Must Pass. All three discs, poster, everything in beautiful condition. Probably the most I've ever spent on a record there, but at $25 it was still a steal. I'm listening to it now, and even though I'm really familiar with the material, I'm still blown away by how good everything about it is. This album literally has everything you could ever want in a listening experience.

And I thought I had a good find last week with a promo copy of MIU...

Today, I bought Kate Bush's the Dreaming, Prince's Purple Rain, XTC's Apple Venus, Pt. 1, Willis Earl Beal's Notcunes (figured I should grab one while I could, only 300 being made), and the Three O'Clock's Baroque Hoedown/Sixteen Tambourines twofer.

yay music

Went down to the record store and bought incredibly clean original copies of the Rain Parade's Emergency Third Rail Power Trip, the Three O'Clock's Sixteen Tambourines, and the Walker Brothers' "Deadlier Than the Male/Archangel" single.

I'm buying so many records every week that I think I might have a problem :-\  ...one thing that really annoys me...CUTOUTS! I don't mind when just a simple line is pressed (straight down, like a punch or little clip without removing any of the cover) somewhere towards the top but when they cut a big diagonal piece of the cover away  :angry

Jesus Christ, man! Nice work of late.

If I'm not mistaken, you weren't yet familiar with Wilco when their new album dropped. I take it based on your buying habits that you've at least taken something of a shine to them?

Zappa's Yellow Shark is a great, great album.

Yeah, I had never listened to Wilco before for some reason. When Star Wars came out and I liked it, I decided I should check out some of their older albums and then started to read things about Summerteeth that really grabbed my attention. So, I listened to that and discovered I was missing out on brilliant music. That album is sorta weird,  as it seems like the dark horse in their discography. I didn't even know it existed until a couple days ago. I can't recommend that album enough to people that haven't heard it, though. Summerteeth is the encapsulation of everything I would want to accomplish as a musician, and he did it all in one album and moved on. Bastard. Then, I found the song "California Stars" and just decided to check out the rest.

Congrats, Wilco. Your plan worked.

Zappa's Yellow Shark is a great, great album.

I love Zappa as the orchestral composer and I'm excited to listen to it. I listened to a couple of the Uncle Meat tunes on YouTube and really liked those.

I didn't like it much at first because the musical tracks all seemed pretty similar to each other. I'm listening to it a lot now, though - just letting it play on repeat as I drive around. It's a great album, although maybe "the Infamous Date Rape" wasn't a great idea. Most people seem to prefer Q Tip, but Phife Dawg is my favorite.

The insert for the Fleet Foxes has a beautifully written essay of sorts recalling his memories of listening to the Beach Boys when he was younger, and how music is one of the purest forms of memories. This was also mentioned in another thread by another user.
Also, the Protomartyr album comes with a huge poster and a little lyric booklet thing.

My coworker also gave me this CD today. Preparing for music festival season...

Cool, I have a lot of those...all seem to be pressed on white vinyl. Which one was it?

It was Bach's Bottom. In my experience, his albums (other than A Man Called Destruction) are quite difficult to find in the US, although I imagine it's easier in Germany where his albums were actually printed and distributed at various times.

The world needs a Chilton box set.

Yeah, plenty of Chilton records available in Germany. I think I have all the vinyl lps except "Loose shoes & tight p*ssy". Still need to find a few of of the singles/eps though.

Might have gone overboard this week... meh. I also don't know if I have a CD reader available, so I don't know when I get to listen to these :(. I need to order stuff on Amazon anyway, though.

Protomartyr's Under Color of Official Right (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qO7lmiUQdm8): Finally own this now. I love the packaging of their albums (in vinyl format, anyway). What a fun band.

Fleetwood Mac's Tusk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zKM60a2k44): I've linked the song that I like right here, "Never Make Me Cry." I might have given my vinyl copy of this away or something... at any rate, I've listened to this album all the way through at least once and I'd love to do it again. Anyway, I got this used 2-CD bonus edition with demos 'n' stuff. There's a cover of our Boys' own "Farmer's Daughter" on here, I have just realized.

Pink Floyd's Obscured by Clouds (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PM-iHiD75Co): I have no idea what this will sound like.* Pretty album cover though, right? I'm just streaming this on Spotify for the time being. I guess it's also some sort of soundtrack.
*I'm listening and I now know what I'm getting into.

(https://img.discogs.com/L6_PNtqpCjM8Y79oi42rAjln09c=/fit-in/300x300/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(40)/discogs-images/R-6940009-1429988617-4700.jpeg.jpg)
Mac Demarco's Demos. Vol 1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ps3j1enUCA&list=PLXj9Jx2wnkQc05KqK1o0jGkiMnp72xRR-): I get a kick out of reading the little CD booklet for this. I just love how he does not give a f*ck about anything. Some of the stuff is instrumental so that you can get lost in all of his analogue-tapey-dreamy-guitar-ness.

I also bought Coltrane's My Favorite Things and the Kinks' Something Else; I'm too tired and lazy to give fancy descriptions for those now.

Yeah, I don't know why I waited this long to buy it. It's most wonderful. I think Under Color of Official Right is my favorite amongst the three, but they're all good. Glad to know you enjoy them as well! It seems that you enjoyed fellow Hardly Art-ists, Chastity Belt.

The Talking Heads album. I had played it as background music and thought it was ok. Thought "Radio Head" and "Wild Wild Life" were catchy (still do). But I didn't realize how awful the intro to "Love for Sale" was until I gave it a solid listen, and there are just some other ok-ish (compared to the first handful of TH albums) songs on there.

I continually feed the need to buy more of their albums, but I don't think I'm gonna invest in more of their stuff, save the Stop Making Sense DVD.

Today, I splurged on these:
