Capacity: 17 000, but I seem to remember that the Beach Boys use the stage set up that only allows for 12 000. We'll see.
Should look like this:

I'd love to see videos from this venue, I'm sure the energy in that arena will be powerful.

seems to be only a handful of tickets left on ticketmaster. There are 5 sections with tickets still available, everything else is grey.

Anyway, here's an article I found today:

Whoever wrote it seems not to be a native german speaker and also gets a few things wrong about the history of the band.

And if anyone still needs tickets, I came across this. Prices go from 50 Euro to 150 Euro (scroll down):

Maybe "Kulturzeit" on 3Sat. They reported on both BWPS and TSS, the latter even with those silent GV sessions footage.

Haven't heard anything about it. Maybe some Boulevard-magazine like "taff" or "Leute heute". The latter one seems more likely though.
Or as Micha said "Kulturzeit".

It was really good (obvs).

The show was filmed.

Great set list with an intermission.

It was so special to hear people doing their original vocal parts from the records live...I'd only ever seen Brian live before.

The mix seemed a little harsh at times - although Mike sang *great*, some of his leads hurt my ears a bit.  Still an amazing night though.  Brian seemed quite perky as well.

I just got home and haven't slept very much. So in short: it was a great (!) show. Very good performances by the boys (and band of course). Each guy seemed to be in really fine form. Brian was on and moved around quite a lot, sang backgound vocals and played his piano on almost every song (I had a perfect seat for watching his keyboard). On some songs he only used one hand, for example "All this is that" for which he only used his right one or the left on "Then I kissed her". I already told the other concert goers from SmileySmile that I was very surprised at how little the backgroundband sang. Sure, they added harmonies (Darian did a great Darlin' and Scott Totten a beautiful Boob) but mostly it was really just the 5 Beach Boys plus Foskett and Totten. It really was a fantastic concert and even though they didn't play "Marcella" as I hoped for I couldn't have asked for anything more.
Of the rarities they did "Pet sounds" (David played around a little and added some licks that weren't part of the original recording) "IJWMFTT" "Add some music" (afterwards Brian goes "The boys!") "Kiss me baby" "California saga" "Cottonfields" "Please let me wonder" "You're so good to me" "Wendy" "Sail on sailor" "All this is that" "Darlin" "Disney girls (1957)" (fantastic performance by Bruce) "Come go with me" "Getcha back"
BTW "Good vibrations" was not part of the encore ! It was played as one of the last songs of the regular 2nd set.
Brian added some harmonies now and then that seemed to come out of the blue. On "Disney girls" he all of a sudden added a harmonie that sounded big, beautiful and melancholy. It wasn't on the original recording and just stunning. Even if it was just a few seconds.

It really was a mesmerizing show and I'm happy that all the guys were enjoying themselves. I looked at Brian more than once during the show and seeing him I got the feeling that he was really at home with these guys. Quite touching

Some other things:
From my seat I could look directly into the backstage area (made some pictures, too) and I was surprised that they had quite a bunch of young girls there. Some hung around Brian and Al who spent the time of intermission sitting together. I don't know if there were some daughters of the guys or maybe wifes/girlfriends of some of the band members.

And when Mike introduced "Boob" he said something like "Have you ever been in love with a car that's growin' old?" and someone in the audience yelled "BMW!". Mike: "No, BMW's never get old !"  :lol

Brian had a little choreography for "Sail on sailor" moving his arms upwards or sideways, to the body or away from the body (typical Brian stuff). BUT almost the whole backing band joined him in doing so and at one point Bruce did, too. I thought that was funny.

When Mike did his spin on "Surfin' safari" (iirc) Bruce and Scott Totten each also did a spin.

Brian introduced David and "Getcha back" by calling him "the 64 years young guy".

I didn't get any poster, they were all sold out after the show. But I have a programme and it's really, really nice. There's even a new (to me) picture from the early 60s of Brian at the drums and Al with Brian's bass. The essay is not very good though, but that's just a minor thing.

BTW there was a camera guy on stage quite often but that was for the monitor outside of the O2 world somebody said. It wasn't filmed for DVD or something similar.

When I get around to upload some pictures I will post them here

I think our members deserve a note of thanks and support when they contribute a report so insightful and generous--what a solace it is to us fans back here at home, esp. in LA, who are so hungry for BB information, especially the kind of humane observations that Rocker has made. So, in short, thank you Rocker from the professor.

This is only an innocent guess, but I can't imagine that the BB will not just head back to the studio and produce another album, considering the powerful energy and artistic bliss that that are generating with their shows and have generated with their album.

Just came back from Berlin, it was an awsome concert.
What a set llst! (quite simular to Oslo) Darian threw a paper plane into the crowd at the end of the concert, maybe that was the set list?  :-D

Thanks for your kind words !

EDIT:
Funny you mention that, because on my way home I looked into a music magazine that featured an interview with David, Al and Bruce. Bruce (of all) said that after the tour they will work on songs for the next album which will feature stuff from Al, David and Bruce that is already finished or will be finished then. The reporter asked abou the 2012 Do It Again and Al said it will be on the next album. I don't know of course if anything of that is true. I don't think we need the re-recording of DIA (or other songs for that matter) on a new album. TWGMTR is the way to go if they'll do another one.

The reporter also asked if they were surprised that the reunion happened and Al said he wasn't because it was a natural progress of which David answered something like Al should be the last one to be surprised Al, as he talked about the reunion the whole time with the press when nothing was planned.  :-D

What I forgot: Bruce really, REALLY got the crowd going. Whoever said that his crazy behaviour works in concert, was absolutely right. My biggest problem always was that he clowned around in front of the stage when he was supposed to be at his mic. But that happened very seldomly yesterday and as I mentioned, he got the crowd going. So I'd like to apologize if I ever said that he shouldn't do it and that it was disturbing to see him act that way.

I read several reports and it was said that the concert was nearly sold out with 9000 people. I saw which kind of seats were left and they were very bad. You probably wouldn't have seen anything from there.

Thanks Slim Shady for the videos ! "Wouldn't it be nice" brought the house down !

Title: Incredible Shrinking Bruce
Post by: rn57 on August 04, 2012, 04:25:30 PM
Is it just me....or is Bruce getting shorter in every photo where they line up side by side? When Carl and Dennis were alive he was maybe an inch shorter than them and at least two and a half inches taller than Al, or that's how it looked. Now, in nearly every photo, he looks only an inch taller than Al, if that. Or is just Al wearing boots and Bruce wearing flipflops or whatever?

Every time Bruce tells a fan to save up their pennies and that they are through talking, he shrinks an inch.

Oh, one little thing I have to add about the programme after having had time enough to look through it. No mention of Blondie and Ricky. Blondie is on one picture but that's it. Apart from that and the essay it's really great to look at so many rare pictures

What a fabulous show.

Here some impressions from the Berlin Show I took, apparantly sitting just opposite of Rocker  ;D

Is Mike Love showing he wants to blow his head away? Well maybe he only just had a cunning idea what to have for breakfast.

I like this one with Brian waving his hands.

Audience

Notice in some shots there's a guy filming with a camera in between the musicians, so I hope we will have the Berlin gig on DVD. When entering the venue there was a notice that there will be filming.
He also was responsible for the crowd to advance to the stage. In one occassion he nearly crashed with his camera into Scott Totten ;D

Setlist deleted due to major error  :(

One thing really annoyed me: When telling people I was traveling to Berlin to see The Beach Boys I always had the same replies: "Ahh that's , Baaa Baaa Baaa Barbara Ann.... "
Do the people only know this song in Germany? Why? They had a # 1 hit with "Sloop John B." in 1966. But no sir, it's always "Barbara Ann"!
Aaargh....

"California Saga (on my way to sunny Californ-i-a)". No "Big sur".

@MyBrotherWoody: Ah, ok. I thought it was because of the pictures  :)

As I understood the filming was done by the O2 world for the big monitor outside the arena for public viewing reasons (without sound). Some local TV cameras were interviewing fans before the show. But I really don't think it was done for DVD. If I'm wrong and it was then that's cool because it was a fantastic performance.

Oh and unfortunately yes, Germany thinks about "Barbara Ann" or "Surfin' USA" when hearing the Beach Boys' name. And "California dreamin'" is a big pleaser for german people, too.

There was no Carl-vocal on "God only knows", it was Brian who did a very good job with the lead.
And I have the feeling that "It's ok" was done in the firs set but I could be wrong

I think it was done right after "Darlin'" (which is also missing). I'm not sure though. IIRC Darian was the first of the band who got a lead that night

One of the reviews said the played 49 songs. Adding Betsy and Darlin' it's up to 47.

Here's the setlist according to my notes (pretty authentic too :wink):

Do It Again
Little Honda
Catch a Wave
Hawaii (Dave lead)
Don't Back Down
Surfin' Safari
Surfer Girl
You're So Good to Me
Then I Kissed Her
Please Let Me Wonder
Getcha Back (Dave lead)
Wendy (Bruce lead)
Kiss Me, Baby
Come Go with Me
Why Do Fools Fall in Love
When I Grow Up (to Be a Man)
Disney Girls
It's OK
Darlin' (Darian lead)
Ballad of Ol' Betsy (Scott T. lead)
Be True to Your School (Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen)
Don't Worry Baby
Announcement of the intermission after the next 4 songs
Little Deuce Coupe
409
Shut Down
I Get Around

Intermission

Pet Sounds (David Marks on lead guitar with backing band)
Add Some Music to Your Day
Sail on, Sailor
Heroes and Villains
I Just Wasn't Made for These Times
All This Is That
Cotton Fields
That's Why God Made the Radio
In My Room
God Only Knows (Brians sing lead)
California Dreamin'
Sloop John B
Wouldn't It Be Nice
Good Vibrations
California Girls
All Summer Long
Help Me, Rhonda
Rock and Roll Music
Surfin' USA

Encore:
Kokomo
Barbara Ann
Fun, Fun, Fun

I noticed Jeff sang Mike's deleted lyrics in Good Vibrations: "she goes with me to a blossom world we find"

Dave's backing vox were especially audible in "When I grow up", counting up the years.

Bruce clowned around quite a lot. During the H&V chorus he watched Mike D'Amicos hand going up and down the bass strings from about 2 inches distance, making a astonished silly face.

Brian frequently turned to the audience trying to get them to move to the music by making gestures. The first time I noticed that was during "It's OK". In the organ bridge in "Good Vibrations" he told the audience to clap, which I rather wish he didn't because that took the quiet mood from that part.

Two songs that I'm not into I liked more live: "Sail On Sailor" due to Brian's lead, and, surprisingly, "Kokomo", which featured a nice two-part harmony by Mike and Bruce with no additional vocal backing by the other singers. Generally, the vocal blend was quite well.

I didn't spot any autotune, rather a few flat notes from Brian. Not too many though.

The song that moved me most was "Wendy", for some reason. And the most majestic moment to me was the beginning of the tag to "God Only Knows" when Brian called "God only knows what I'd be without you" and Bruce answered, the very same people as on the original record. And then Al chimed in... great!

A nice thing also was to meet some of you guys on the boat: Paulos, RobDean, Annalee, Gordon, Jukka, Lowbacca, Rocker...

Thanks to Rocker for the news research!

That setlist sounds about right. Thanks Micha !

I can't even pick out one favorite moment of the show. The whole show was one big highlight to me. Seeing Brian enjoy himself and - as pointed out earlier - not only singing lead but also doing background parts and playing his piano for nearly every song (it was in the mix as you could hear it between songs, but probably quite low). Everyone seemed so happy and it showed in their performances.
I think "Little Honda" always sounds boring when listening to live performances but when you're in the hall it really rocks as it should.

Rocker's report that he heard an interview confirming that the BB will work on the (I am confidently switching from an indefinite to a definite article) new album, polishing off those songs by Al, Bruce, and Dave that are close to being in the can but did not make TWGMTR, is the biggest piece of news I have gotten from this excellent, informative series of reports, though no one seems to be seizing upon it.

A new album, where we hear some new songs and perhaps some new Wilson/Love pieces will be great.  I love the album, of course, and have written rapturously about it, but it's  full of older, Joe Thomas pieces that were on the shelf from Brian's solo era. Mike and the Boys came in and added and beautified and supplemented and re-imagined, etc., but I like the idea of a ground-up BB production, in one studio, with one set of musicians--and no Skunk Baxter.

Will anyone take me up on the task of listening to "I think about you often," Dave's solo album, and correlating his guitar parts there  to his (purported) parts on TWGMTR? These juxtapositions reveal his signature style on "Summers Gone" and also the "Chuck Berry" fills on BIM, where I think Skunk is only playing some fuzz  or wah-wah peddle fills and no actual lead lines.  I am not all all sure, and I will demure to those who know better.
Thanks and best to all,

Well, the stuff wasn't really Brian solo material but since he and Joe worked on it in the 90s he was very clear that it was supposed for the Beach Boys and that's why he didn't work on it until now.

That would be neat. But the problem is that no one mentioned "new" songs. Al said that "Do it again" will be on the record and we know that Bruce re-cut "She believes in love again". At this point I'm not that optimistic in case there really should be a new album.

Got it. I suppose that "new" was not the right term.  I ought to have said that I would like to see Al, Bruce, and Dave represented with whatever songs they themselves want to get on the album, whether they are new or have been on the shelf. It will be new and fresh and exciting to many of us.  Mainly the idea that "we can keep doing this so let's produce those great songs you guys have" is what excites me. My point is so facile, I suppose--wanting more more BB songs to cherish.

Back after 3000 km cruising through Austria and Germany in 5 days. It was an exhausting trip but worth every drop of sweat and cent we spent. First of all it was great meeting some of you guys and we should definitely repeat this some time again. Rob is really a fun guy and it was nice talking to Jukka and Lowbacca,  I just would have wished to talk more with the others as well. I didn't go to the after party as well because we drove right after the gig to Stuttgart. It was our first time in Germany and it was great, lovely people there, I understand them even better then in Austria.  ;D  And yeah, they sure have some beautiful girls.

We shall start with the Berlin one. We got to the arena early and there was one guy who made a comment about my Pacific Ocean Blue shirt. Later it turned out this guy was Rob. He told us some very fascinating stories and you could see the sparkle in his eyes when telling them. Suddenly he made a strange look and then he was there: Brian Wilson escorted in a car, my heart was bumping, it looked as he wanted to get out. But he was very nervous, even though they were maybe just half a dozen fans waiting there. They still used another way then, maybe with the staff it looked like too much people for Brian or his “chaperone”.  After the enjoyable meeting at the boat we got to our seats, second row in front of Mike and Al. I was overwhelmed by seeing my heroes. After all it was my first Beach Boys show my brother saw Brian 5 years ago at the Vienna opera house, but that's all. Right at the beginning Mike gave me a thump up and pointed to my POB shirt and I was like in heaven. Al gave me one as well since I sang along to pretty much every song. (Yeah thanks to Jukka I had a glass of beer too much).  ;)

I was impressed by their set and the guys were on that night. Brian lost his voice for only a brief moment for “I Just Wasn't Made For These Times”. It was so much fun seeing the backing band and David jam on “Pet Sounds”, brilliant. I never really much cared for the Brian Wilson band but they won me over. Mike D'Amico's playing and sound was superb. The guy next to me was blown away and we talked a little through out the concert. At one time he said to me that Darian sounds just like Carl on “Darlin'”. I disagreed, it didn't really sound like Carl but his voice was awesome in his own way and was a real highlight. Brian repeated his line on “California Saga” at the end but no one caught on it. Fun moment during “Add Some Music” when Brian started singing one of Bruce' lines with the latter looking confused and then Brian shared a giggle. The only low point was the ending with some drunk guy getting in front of me and waving with his hands in front of my face and bawling to “Rock And Roll Music” and “Barbara Ann”.  Sorry for my limited English but I hope you could still enjoy my Berlin review.

Sadly I think not , but the memories will live forever xx

Thanks for the report, Rocker!

Great HD videos here

http://www.youtube.com/user/stevebl87 (http://www.youtube.com/user/stevebl87)

Nice crowd, looks sold out!

Brian does sound great.  Lovin' this.  Two things:

1. He pulls out the sandpaper like he did on the Gershwin's album "Ain't necessarily so"... "JONAHHHH he lived in a whale!  Oh JONNNAHHHH he lived in a whale!".    Love when he does that.

2. I think this is a great, great, great example of how Brian can perform when he's interested in the material.  California Dreamin' is, if anything, a song that he hasn't gotten tired to death of singing over the years.  It's probably still at least somewhat new to him, he's never done it in solo concerts, has he?  Plus his long lost buddy wrote it.    Also, it's Rock & Roll which Brian has been dying to do for 10 years now.

If they want Brian to stay involved, they need to keep him interested with stuff like this.

Only got back to the UK late last night so haven't had time to post until now. After the mostly glowing reviews from the US leg of the tour the show was all I expected and more, I'm still amazed at just how good they sounded vocally with special mention going to Mike, how many other 71 year-olds can sing that many leads that well?! The a capella tags to some of the songs like Kiss Me Baby and Darlin' were worth the price of admission alone (special mention to Darian for his killer vocal on Darlin') and it was nice to see everyone have a chance to shine: David on Getcha Back and Pet Sounds, Bruce on Wendy and Disney Girls, Al on Cotton Fields and Help Me Rhonda, Brian on Please Let Me Wonder and God Only Knows, Mike on everything else. The only quibble I had was regarding the sound, vocally it was great but the mix for the instruments was a bit muddy but seemed to improve after the intermission. It was also great to meet my fellow Smiley Smilers at the Eastern Comfort bar boat before the gig, this was the first time I've ever got to hang out with fellow obsessed Beach Boys fans and by sheer coincidence it turned out Rob Dean was sat in the row behind me just to my left! All in all it was well worth the trip, no wbring on Wembley!

A short report from the O2 site. Two famous german actors who attended the show are interviewed and we see some live footage:

@Micha: there's one song missing on your setlist. "California saga: Part3"

Must've accidentally deleted that when I added Disney Girls.

Still a bummer they didn't do Dance Dance Dance, one of my top 3 BB favorites.

On Monday I recorded the ZDF Mittagsmagazin hoping there would be a report, and so it was, 3 minutes. Unfortunately whoever did that seemed not to like the Beach Boys: "Dynamik ist was anderes", he said, and then he found a guy who claimed his girlfriend has been irritating "everybody" by playing a Beach Boys cassette in her car for ten years. Jerk. At least he acknowledged the quality of the song "Summer's Gone". Bruce got to say in an interview that the only thing that has changed in the concerts for him over the years was his eyes got bad so he can't tell whether there really were spectators or if they had just painted the seats. That made Al claim ".. and I'm deaf."

So here's the revised Berlin setlist:

Do It Again
Little Honda
Catch a Wave
Hawaii (Dave lead)
Don't Back Down
Surfin' Safari
Surfer Girl
You're So Good to Me
Then I Kissed Her
Please Let Me Wonder
Getcha Back (Dave lead)
Wendy (Bruce lead)
Kiss Me, Baby
Come Go with Me
Why Do Fools Fall in Love
When I Grow Up (to Be a Man)
Disney Girls
California
It's OK
Darlin' (Darian lead)
Ballad of Ol' Betsy (Scott T. lead)
Be True to Your School (Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen)
Don't Worry Baby
Announcement of the intermission after the next 4 songs
Little Deuce Coupe
409
Shut Down
I Get Around

Intermission

Pet Sounds (David Marks on lead guitar with backing band)
Add Some Music to Your Day
Sail on, Sailor
Heroes and Villains
I Just Wasn't Made for These Times
All This Is That
Cotton Fields
That's Why God Made the Radio
In My Room
God Only Knows (Brians sing lead)
California Dreamin'
Sloop John B
Wouldn't It Be Nice
Good Vibrations
California Girls
All Summer Long
Help Me, Rhonda
Rock and Roll Music
Surfin' USA

Encore:
Kokomo
Barbara Ann
Fun, Fun, Fun

Haha, they probably had a commentary ready before the concert even started. It's typical german TV to report about stuff they don't know nothing about.
BTW in some reviews it was mentioned that the last time the Beach Boys (Mike & Bruce) played in Berlin was 2003 (somehow no one mentioned Brian's solo concerts in Berlin) and they said it was not good and fans were complaining about it. Does anyone hve more info about that?

One thing that I was reminded and didn't mention before. Mike should really be more careful with his tambourine. It's very annoying on GOK, because he only knows one way to play it (on uptempo songs lke SloopJB it sounds good) :

Are you sure other countries' TV reporters don't do that? :wink

One otherwise good newspaper article claimed that Brian never performed with the Beach Boys in Berlin before. This source says they played Berlin in 1964 (November 17):

I heard many reports that the Beach Boys didn't play Berlin since almost 50 years. I guess it's just that most of them don't know about the history. They probably think that after Brianstopped touring in '64 it was the Mike & Bruce show, Al's Family & Friends and Brian solo. It's very strange what's been said and I really don't know how they get to those conclusions. Does that happen in other countries ?  ;D

It's been awhile that bgas posted this picture in the media section, but I just stumbled upon it and think it fits in here really well.
