Title: Beach Boys Survivor #30 Winner: Where I Belong
Post by: pixletwin on April 17, 2014, 11:05:42 AM
Welcome back to a new round of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR. Remember to be respectful of others opinions. Please don't spam the thread with too much opinionating (a little is ok  :D ).... and without further ado...

For me this album  is fraught with tracks which bear little resemblance to THE BEACH BOYS and far too much much resemblance to Culture Club. My least favorite Beach Boys album.

Quote
The Beach Boys is the self-titled twenty-fifth studio album by American rock band The Beach Boys, released on June 10, 1985. Produced by Steve Levine, the album is the band's first to be recorded after the death of founding member Dennis Wilson. It was also the first of the band's albums to be recorded digitally and released on CD. It's also the last album released by James William Guercio's Caribou Records.

For the album, the band hired Culture Club producer Steve Levine, who took them into the world of drum machines, synthesizers, sampling, and hi-tech recording technology. Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Mike Love, Bruce Johnston and Al Jardine all took an active role in the project, writing several new songs for it, with Stevie Wonder and Culture Club each donating a song. The album was recorded during summer 1984 at Red Bus studio in London, and Westlake Audio in Los Angeles during late 1984/early 1985. It features Motown artist Stevie Wonder on harmonica and keyboards on the song "I Do Love You", which he also wrote. Ringo Starr also appears on the track "California Calling" (Starr also appeared live with The Beach Boys in 1985 during the 4th of July concert in Washington D.C.). Noted guitarist Gary Moore features on all tracks playing both guitar and synthaxe.

Although "Getcha Back" (composed by Love and his new musical partner, former Byrds producer Terry Melcher), was a top 30 hit, the album only reached #52 in the U.S. (making it their highest charting album since the release of 1976's album 15 Big Ones). After the album, CBS Records let the band's contract expire, leaving them without a record deal for the first time in years.

Brian Wilson contributed a song written in 1982 by himself and Dennis Wilson called "Oh Lord", but the song did not make the final cut. Also cut from the album was a cover of "At the Hop" with lead vocals by Mike Love.

As usual vote for your least favorite track. The track with the most votes gets voted off.

Tally on April 19th

Getcha Back
It's Gettin' Late
Crack at Your Love
Maybe I Don't Know
She Believes in Love Again
California Calling
Passing Friend
I'm So Lonely
Where I Belong
I Do Love You
It's Just a Matter of Time
Male Ego

On this album filled with crap, Maybe I Don't Know is the crappiest.

Listening to this album again, I realize apparently I like Stevie Wonder's songwriting more than the Beach Boys' during this period.

She Believes in Love Again

Passing Friend.

This is hard, I dislike almost every song on this album. I choose this particular one first, because it's one of the most painful examples of the Beach Boys' creative decline: in just 19 years, they went from making Pet Sounds and Smile to recording a Culture Club outtake.

Passing Friend, mainly because it seems to meander between a few ideas and goes on way too long.

For this album, there's about 5 songs I enjoy revisiting, which is more than I could say for Keepin' the Summer Alive.  I'll also take super-80's production over whatever Johnston was doing on the latter.

There is nothing worse than a Passing Friend.  On this album.

The worst bit for me is when Carl, who I can only speculate/imagine may singing to a vocal guide-track, starts doing a Boy George impersonation - ; I wonder if he popped on a hat and beads to get in the mood - flattering for Georgie-Boy, somewhat deflating for us spectators.

Na na not again.

Man.  This is tough.  I usually know, full-well, what I'm in for listening to this album.  To pick the worst is like asking -- "would you rather get punched in your kidneys -- or your liver?"

I don't know... California Calling?  I guess.  For actually "trying."  It's way too contrived.  Even though it's one of the more "beach boys-y" songs on the album -- it actually, somehow, manages to spoil "the mood."

I actually really like this album.  And I love Maybe I Don't Know, I've talked about my love for that song before on here.  It's like the best Huey Lewis song Huey Lewis never recorded.  I think some of Carl Wilson's best vocal performances are on this album.

Anyways, my least favorite is She Believes In Love Again.

All seriousness though all of the songs you mentioned (bar I'm So Lonely, which is an all-right song that could have been better) are the best off this album. Absolutely great, and worthy of being on a Best-Of Beach Boys compilation!

That's because there's no wrong answer.   :-D  It's like shooting fish in a barrel.  Close your eyes (or hold your nose) and take your pick.  Either way... you're right!  If you were to take any song, save Getcha Back, and play it for someone on the street, telling them "this... is the worst BB song."  They'd believe you.

I still like the album though.  It's consistent and drenched in 80s digital, brick-phone mania.  I'm a maniac, maniac!  A real honest attempt to make a good album, for the time.

Oh, 1985... where have ye gone?

She Believes in Love Again was so far from being the survivor. (7) (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

I gotta say, I was kinda shocked that She Believes In Love Again was voted off. Personally it's my favourite Bruce songs he ever did. I mean sure, it's a typical 80's ballad, but it was pretty well done I think. And Carl's vocals just made it perfect!

I'm due to listen to this album again. At this point, the remaining songs don't seem terrible, at least in memory. I held this one in fair regard for a few years after its release in 1985.

Close call but 7 smilers found California Calling lacked. (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

As usual vote for your least favorite track. The track with the most votes gets voted off.

Tally on April 25th

Getcha Back
It's Gettin' Late
Crack at Your Love
Maybe I Don't Know
I'm So Lonely
Where I Belong
I Do Love You
It's Just a Matter of Time
Male Ego

Round#1 - Passing Friend April 19
Round#2 - She Believes in Love Again April 21
Round#3 - California Calling April 23

On this album filled with crap, Maybe I Don't Know is the crappiest.

I'm so lonely - back in ole '85, while I was delighted to hear this track get annouting on my local AM station, I had to begrudingly agree with the smart ass announcer when he said "That's a new one from The Beach Boys, it sounds like they couldn't care less" (altough he obvioulsy hadn't heard the whole LP)

Being a dedicated Beach Boys fan in these 70's/80's Survivor Threads has become a matter of defending what we should be here to adore.  I sure do.   I Love this record.
When I first heard that Culture Club's producer was picked to oversee the tracks, I thought it was a bad choice.  I couldn't stand Culture Club, not one track.  They were popular, so it was difficult to completely shut them out.
I also didn't think it was the best idea for Carl to come back to the band.  But regardless of what I read around here, Carl was the Boss of this band.  Live - now when they did oldies you were more likely to hear deep cuts, overlooked for years - Carl even worked in his solo stuff, the 1983 sets were fantastic.  And in the studio... especially in the studio.  They were so dependent on him, even Bruce turned his one song over to Carl to sing.  Smart move.  Brian was struggling a bit by 1985.  He brought what he had, unlike later when he saved songs for future projects - I don't think he was doing that here.  I had heard a piece of "It's Just a Matter of Time" back in 1979.
Mike is solid on this record too.  His vocal on "It's Just a Matter of Time" is a wonderful throwback to 15 Big Ones.  "Getcha Back" and "Male Ego" are both classic.  I believe since the late 70's he was happy just doing his part (the popular oldies) at the concerts.
Carl wanted to sound modern, something he had been pushing for years.  He may have thought it was a good idea to bring in Levine, but to me he is very much in control of the production on the tracks he is singing.
I'm going to try and start putting up more input on all the polling/ranking around here.  For now I need to vote, my first on this record.  My very favorites aren't doing too well.
.
My vote goes to "I'm So Lonely"

10 voters sure new what they wanted.  (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

As usual vote for your least favorite track. The track with the most votes gets voted off.

Tally on April 27th

Baffled by the votes for Where I Belong - isn't it, like, several thousand leagues superior to every other song on the album.

Personal opinion and all, but Christ, please someone tell me it isn't going to get beaten by Getcha Back...

Where I Belong is an all-right song, but I've never got the appeal to that song. And Getcha Back (as well as Maybe I Don't Know) are lost BB's classics. The only flaw to Getcha Back would be the poor vocals by Mike. Al or Carl would have been better off singing lead to that song.

That said, In my opinion Where I Belong is good, but I prefer Maybe I Don't Know, Getcha Back, I Do Love You, and She Believes In Love Again (a guilty pleasure). But it's a great album with strong competition, had it been on KTSA or SIP or something like that, I'd say Where I Belong would be the best song.

Again, it's all subjective, but I can see if Getcha Back is more popular than Where I Belong.

10 votes for the Lonely.  (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

It's not too bad, being a short, simple pseudo-doo-wop number.  The others left I think are more substantial and work better with the 80's production.

"Where I Belong."

I have to admit that I do have some small amount of admiration for "It's Getting Late," as I think it's the song on the album that most successfully reconciles the Beach Boys' vocal sound with what I take to be popular music trends of the 1980s.  Since I'm not really a fan of those particular trends, I don't love the song, but I do think it's one of the best songs on this album.

I've already voted (Matter of Time) but this is an album where I wish we could have access to the multi track masters and remaster it ourselves.  Personally I think "It's Getting Late" is a great song but it's the production on it that blows.

Who do you think we are, Culture Club?

Darlin' I'm lost without you. But 15 others felt different.  (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

As usual vote for your least favorite track. The track with the most votes gets voted off.

GETCHA BACK

It's reputation as some sort of classic leaves me dumbfounded. I just do not get it.

To me, the other remaining tracks are infinitely superior: Male Ego is as close to a return to form as Brian managed in the '80's (with the group at least); It's Gettin' Late may be less than the sum of its parts, but many of those parts are fantastic, particularly the intro; and Where I Belong is just exceptional.

I despise It's Getting Late. It is a terrible song that shouldn't have made it as far as it did.

Getcha Back is good, but I don't think  it's the most incredible song on this crappy album.

My favorite on this album has got to be Where I Belong. It's got a great vocal from Carl and the chorus is one of the ONLY EMOTIVE MOMENTS on this whole album that doesn't feel like contrived, plastic, souless 80's music.

It sounds like the Beach Boys.

I don't like "Where I Belong" at all.  To me, it sounds less like the Beach Boys and more like a bad '90s boy band with bad '80s style production.
"Getcha Back" is okay, which makes it a lot better than most of what's on this album.  It's not the most embarrassing throwback song they ever did, but it doesn't come close to the songs whose style it tries to imitate.

"It's Gettin' Late" is one of the few songs I actually kind of enjoy on this album, for reasons I stated above.

I couldn't disagree with you more pixletwin. Absolutely the best track they did for this album. While I like Getcha Back as a song, Mike's just too nasal on it for my taste.

Hmmm, I didn't expect to be undecided at the final voting of this particular album.

My vote goes to Getcha Back - but not by much - echoing above sentiments of getting a real buzz when this came out back in '85 with, for me, little to no pre-warning (unlike the weeks of speculation and advance news one can get on the net these days).  And I have a soft-spot for the kooky very low vocal overdubs scattered in the 2nd chorus.

My biggest regret is with casting this vote is that it means Survivor:Summer in Nashville is almost upon us.

I think Where I Belong is kinda contrived and boring. While It's Gettin' Late may be unabashedly '80s, it's pulled off in a way that transcends most of the band's efforts in the decade. Carl's strong lead vocal, fitting production (!) and no off-putting lyrics about exotic islands makes it a winner in my books.

Love the intro to "It's Gettin' Late".
Very much enjoy "Where I Belong" on this otherwise turd of an album.
But the crown's gotta go to, IMHO...

"Getcha Back"--I used to despise this track, but it's so dang catchy, and the transition from the 1st chorus to the 2nd verse is WONDERFUL.

Better be getting my vote in then.  And thank you, as usual, for all your work keeping the game running smoothly pixletwin.  I know it can be trying at times.
.
Let me first say, one more time before we leave the dance floor - I Love this album.
Carl's last attempt at bringing a modern sound into the camp.  Things were about to get tough for a fan like me.  They were still drawing crowds to the shows, but something was changing.  This is where they started trying to play what the majority of the fans wanted to hear - the old hits.  All through the late 80's, I found it difficult to enjoy the shows.  Don't get me wrong, I love the old songs.  I wasn't against surf-n-car medleys and enjoyed Mike bringing in Jan and Dean tracks, or acting like their first live album was the one that really mattered, but please... I kept leaving asking myself why was that all they wanted to play.  What about the fans like me, who wanted to hear deep cuts?  I guess Mike started doing this in the early 80's while Carl was out trying to stay relevant.  But when Carl came back, for awhile, Carl (and Al and Brian to a lesser extent) had a lot of input in the band's choice of material.  By the 90's I didn't even make every show.  And I was the kind of guy who would buy tickets to both shows, and spend the day (and night) with my favorite band.  The easiest way to say this, is that I thought bringing in Stamos was a bad idea.  I liked the cheerleaders out front of the stage, but soon the girls were on the stage!  Mike was in a whirl, and seemed distracted by all the attention (though I'm sure he loved it- who wouldn't).  It was his idea of what a Beach Boys Show should be - give the people what they want.  But this was everybody's Beach Boys, not the Kinks.  And as good as Matt is, I wanted Carl and Al to be taking the old Brian leads.  I missed the energy of Dennis too, that played into it.  But now Brian didn't seem very interested either.  This is how it seemed at the time, before I started reading some of the awful books and articles detailing their personal lives.  Something I'm still not that interested in.  This fan was there for the music.
.
In 1985 this album showed hope.  But these songs were left in the dust at the live shows.  Maybe this isn't the right thread to say anymore, so let me get to my vote.
.
Only one of my very favorites made it to the final.  My #1:  "Maybe I Don't Know"
#2:  "I Do Love You"
#3:  and my vote, "It's Gettin' Late"

Disappointing, but previous tournaments have shown that Where I Belong seems to a more polarizing song than Getcha Back even though it's a clear favourite for many.

I suppose the right song won, at least out of the remaining.

Here's how I'd rank it:

12. California Calling.
11. Male Ego.
10. It's Just A Matter Of Time.
9. I'm So Lonely.
8. Passing Friend.
7. It's Gettin' Late.
6. Crack At Your Love.
5. Where I Belong.
4. She Believes In Love Again.
3. I Do Love You.
2. Getcha Back.
1. Maybe I Don't Know.

Let's see how I did with the predictions I made back in the "All Summer Long" heat. Right guesses in green, wrong ones in red.

I get around
Don't worry baby
Little Saint Nick
Please let me wonder

Devoted to you

Good vibrations

Cabinessence
All I wanna do
'Til I die
All this is that
Sail on, sailor
It's OK
The night was so young
My Diane
Baby Blue
Goin' On

Oh well.

So what was GertieJ's final vote for then?  If it's Where I Belong then that would leave it at a tie I believe.

Gertie voted for IGL, crossed that out and voted WIB. At this point (1:38 pm MST) the vote was 13 to 13. Then Gertie changed it back again to IGL. This made the vote 12 to 13 in GB's favor and it was the final vote within the prescribed 20 minutes.

Sum: no typo at all.

Welcome back to the FINAL (redo). A misunderstanding on my part has contaminated the results.

Survivor is a  game of chance.
The Gamble starts with just one glance.
Male Ego has been voted out toniiiihigggggght! (19)  (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

Per the usual in the final round, vote for your FAVORITE TRACK! The track with the most votes is the SURVIVOR.

Tally on May 8th

Getcha Back
It's Gettin' Late
Where I Belong

Round#1 - Passing Friend April 19
Round#2 - She Believes in Love Again April 21
Round#3 - California Calling April 23
Round#4 -Maybe I Don't Know April 25
Round#5 - I'm So Lonely April 27
Round#6 - Crack at Your Love April 29
Round#7 - I Do Love You May 1
Round#8 - It's Just a Matter of Time May 3
Round#9 - Male Ego May 5

I despise It's Getting Late. It is a terrible song that shouldn't have made it as far as it did.

Getcha Back is good, but I don't think  it's the most incredible song on this crappy album.

My favorite on this album has got to be Where I Belong. It's got a great vocal from Carl and the chorus is one of the ONLY EMOTIVE MOMENTS on this whole album that doesn't feel like contrived, plastic, souless 80's music.

It sounds like the Beach Boys.

Final tally in 24 hours.

VOTE !!!!!!!

It's a shameless rip-off of Hungry Heart and one of Mike's worst leads ever, but still I think it's easily the best song on this very weak album.
