OK. Now, rumour has it that there is a box set in the making, or nearly finished, or finished, titled Made In California.

Is there any truth to this?  Huh

Am beginning to wonder whether it's already been through a few permutations that we might never get to hear about…

Experiencing The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette for the very first time as I type.

Um.

Not really happening. Somewhat sub-Jimmy Webb... trying a bit too hard. When I first heard Odessey & Oracle I was doing backflips around the room after two cuts. That's not happening here, at all.

[later] OK, so over halfway through. Getting a bit tedious now. I'll see it through to the end, but this will be the first and last listen.

It has it's moments, but overall, I agree with Andrew here -- it's no masterpiece! But their '66-'67 singles ARE I think.

For those who have not heard it, The Further Adventures of Charles Westover by Del Shannon is a stone-cold classic ... top 10 for me for sure.

Yes, we should really get back to topic...

but "The Further Adventures of Charles Westover" is mostly great, although I think the original Home and Away is much much better.
The song "Gemini" is absolutely magnificent: http://youtu.be/MuWIjwsnBhg

I'm not. Just saying that to my ears, nothing grabs me and that part of the problem is that they're trying too hard. Other parts are a well-dodgy stereo mix and some uninspired/derivative/formulaic songwriting. I'm not dismissing the Seasons entirely, just this one album that I had high hopes for based on the comments of others.

Please try to understand that just because someone likes an album, it doesn't mean everyone else has to. I listened to it, uninterrupted and cold, aside from a few comments here, and it did nothing for me. That's it, I gave it a fair shot.

I'm not saying you have to, Andrew. But fair enough.

Is it possible to hive-off the 4Seasons stuff into a sep thread?  After all, it's a genuine fact that the surfers rule – you'd better believe it.

OldNEwJerseyDude  bought a copy of imitation Life gazette the first day it was released.
I assume you are directing it at me. No, I did not buy it back then. I think I first heard it around 71 or 72, but did not listen again until I bought it a couple years ago when it was suggested that it was the 4 Seasons' Smile over on the Hoffman Board. It isn't. I hope it is Ok by you that I don't have to like everything that you like. Wink

The Brianista Prayer

Oh Brian
Thou Art In Hawthorne,
Harmonied Be Thy name

Your Steak Well Done,
On Stage As It Is In Studio,
Give Us This Day, Our Shortenin' Bread
And Forgive Us Our Bootlegs,
As We Also Have Forgiven Our Wife And Managers,
And Lead Us Not Into Kokomo,
But Deliver Us From Mike Love.

There was somebody that posted a story (here? Hoffman? Record Room?) about meeting Frankie Valli in an airport somewhere, and this person shook Frankie's hand and told him that The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette was his favorite 4 Seasons album, and Valli just rolled his eyes and said, "really?".

In real life, conversations often take tangents and turns. So, when you talk about exceptionally talented 60s vocal groups, you might have a little aside about New Jersey's own. I think it's perfectly fine - other forums would call this "threadcrapping", it's more like "natural". However, when nice mod Billy says we should stop our tangent, it's probably time we should.

Onwards and upwards.

Now, who has the tracklisting for MiC? (Besides Andrew....)

 LOL

Now that's what I call a return to topic. I am afeard AGD keeps his lips sealed. Perhaps he is even listening to some sort of proof copy of the box as we speak. And then he will return, acting the blissful ignorant...

Everybody's talking at me but I can't hear a word they're sayin', only the echoes of my mind…

I saw Ralph McTell live once. He was joined on stage for his encore by – literally – dozens of other musicians. A subsequent headcount revealed that there were more members of Fairport Convention on stage that night than there were in Fairport Convention at the time.

Sorry, I'm a hypocrite I know…

What about Wishbone Ash then?

How long did we wait again for the Smile Sessions? From Jardine's first hint (blooper?) to the date of release?

February to November 2011 I think. Much less.

I know I'm going to come on here one day soon and see this thread has leapt forward 20 pages.

Curious what unreleased tracks people "don't want to see" on MIC, considering there will be a limited space allocated for that purpose.

Two that I'd certainly leave off are 'Battle Hymm' and any version of 'Barbara Ann'.
