Important PSA from Brian about Air pollution.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6CPn0TWwcc&feature=related

Can someone remind me of the year of this? Awfully long for a PSA!

Wasn't a PSA. Brian recorded it during the SMiLE sessions.

I don't recall where I read it, but I feel like this was after Smile, sometime in late '67 or '68.

I say it again, it's a shame that Al has to play to such small crowds nowadays

Wow, that was as painful to watch as I feared it would.
Almost Summer could've been a good song if they would have followed the way Brian's demo was going. The lyrics probably go along with the movie but are terrible none the less.
It's very hard for me to sit through such an interview with Mike. He has no charisma to me and mostly comes across like a embarassing big-headed fool. I'm no Mike basher, this is just my opinion and feeling

You're tripping. Mike is awesome here. Just see everything for what it is man and a lot of this sort of thing really shines. Appreciate the existence of Mike Love and you will see him reveal his beauty to you. Goes for everyone & everything. Mike has a bit of a Charles Manson vibe - anyone pick up on it? Similar facial structure and vocal tone, similar weird edgy "what the f*** is this guy doing to me" way of speaking to people...

Listening to Till I Die now - never ceases to amaze me how people doubt Mike Love's talent. His voice sticks out perfectly from the blend at the end. These things I'll be until I die. The mantra. Bold of Mike Love to sing it as with Over & Over. Has anyone noticed that Mike gets a lot of heavy lines? But I thought Mike was just a chump? Oh my mixed signals...

Mike moonlights as a stone cold motherfucker, he's street-level, son. That corny clownshoe sh*t? A day job, it pays the bills. I bet you he's gotta have some nasty-ass, depressing unreleased tracks that are mindblowingly base -- in the best possible sense of universally understandable and relatable. How can a guy who writes lyrics like basically all the originals of Today!'s second side be a total chump?

You hit the nail on the head man!

Someone on here once accused me (during some rambling spew (on my part) of nonsense) of prizing context over content, and it really kind blew my mind to realize that he was right! And that's one of the biggest hurdles for anyone getting into the Beach Boys. Their musical legacy seems to have long been buried beneath steaming heaps of context!

This is obviously changing for the better, but it still presents a huge handicap for anyone trying to approach the band and discover their output without any pre-conceived contextual guidelines tripping up their path.

I have a story that I think is along the lines of what Erik H is talking about. A couple years ago I was helping a friend do a book report on the decade of 1960-1970. Since I had once done the exact same thing when I was at school, I volunteered to help out. It ended in a huge argument over The Beach Boys. She refused to even mention them, because they were "just another surf band", and they weren't worthy of being mentioned along with The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, etc. I tried to explain to her that The Beach Boys quite literally changed the course of music with albums like Pet Sounds and SMiLE. But she wouldn't hear of it.

Yes, Brian looked awkward, but I don't think it had to do with any perceived (and not even real) superiority at the time. In the late '80s, Brian wasn't exactly producing brilliance. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were doing great work. Don't let fandom get in the way of truth: they dominated the late 80s and early 90s in a way few did. They had a lot of huge hits, whether you like the style or not. (Millions upon millions of people obviously did, based on their hits.) They produced 17 #1 hits. How many did Brian have?

Didn't know that or anything about them at all, wow they really cleaned house musical hit wise. I thought they were some flash in the pan winner.

I don't mean to be an asshole, but you might want to look into things a little more thoroughly before posting offhanded dismissals. Janet Jackson, George Michael, Boyz II Men, Mariah Carey, Usher and others had #1s produced by this duo. Not to mention, they were an integral part of the collection of talent from which Prince (and not quite so impressively, but still cool, Morris Day & the Time) arose, the Minneapolis sound.
