Sweet little song. I do not share the hype for this song as other appears to have though

Agreed on both counts.

By my observations, many fans prefer "Melt Away". I'm in the L&M camp. It's instant classic & very good song. 5.

One of my all-time favorites, and have been fortunate to hear Brian perform it live, twice. I enjoy all versions, even the one with Brian wearing leather and "crooning" on stage, but love the Kennedy Center Honors with the boys' choir, Libera.

Oh, now it appears there are more voters than we've ever had on previous BB songs thread. Great, guys 8)

Today's song is Melt Away.

5. It must have been incredible for long-time fans who had heard so little from Brian for so many years to hear a track like this! One of his best solo songs. This should be a concert staple!

I give Melt Away a five, which isn't quite fair. It's not a five out of five, which is perfect (or at least rounds up to perfect). I find flaws in both released versions but still hear some platonic ideal of the song somewhere in my head. It's fantastic, one of his very best songs of the past 40 years.

I would have given 5 to Walkin' the Line, it's really grown on me, particularly the instrumental break. Brian was right to be excited about this and Night Time IMHO.

WTL-great song that deserves a 5 but I'll give it a 4 because of it's production which is a bit flamboyant IMHO.

I'm surprised not to see it rated higher so far--I love it & think it's maybe my favorite song on the album. Super catchy, great vocals, a uniquely expressive concept that 'feels' like Brian, and even more poignant once you know the backstory (think the 80s scenes from the 'Love & Mercy' film).

As they say, time to 'fess up - I dislike the Paley songs. Few songs aside, prefer Sweet Insanity.

RG - A suite rolled into one song, by far the best thing that Brian has done in his solo career.
Special memory was Radio1 in the UK playing it on a weekend (Thanks to big BB fan and DJ Roger Scott) in 1988

I adore Rainbow Eyes, and would give it a 6 just for the intro which is gorgeous in it's simplicity and innocence

I tend to dislike intro, would give it zero. When song gets past it, it's 3. What we say here, "golden middle".

Believe it or not, this is the first time I've ever really listened to Rainbow Eyes. I love it.  ;D I would give it a 5.

I wish it could be arranged differently. It's good melody, catchy refrain. Even with this less-than-stellar backing track, I will not give it 1-4. It's 5.

I gave it a 4, however it has serious overtures on Stay Just A Little Bit Longer by Maurice Williams , so yes I would sue  :hat

5. To my ears, it's cool. Which isn't to say Friends track or MIC track (which is basically the same, there's little difference) would be 3 or 4. I judge songs individually, not by compare. Brian's version is well arranged, it fits the melody somehow. Cool subtly groovy backing vocs too.

Edit: It would be better if voters in this thread - Zargo, clack, bridencar, STE, JK, B.E., Gettin Hungry et al - reviewed the songs as well. I'm interested to see what Smiley Smilers think about songs. After all, it says 1st "Discuss" in the thread subject.

I haven't really given this album its due before. It's great lineup of songs, and Brian's performances are pretty strong throughout. His latter-day voice sounds pretty good. He sounds like Dennis to me on "This Whole World." I gave it a 5.

Hello. I'm back. :D I didn't like it in the BBs album but listening to Brian's singing is cool. 5.
Request to Watamushi's duty as PS moderator: Can you discuss in private with people at PS to not use mean rude label "LDS" (love derangement syndrome, at times they even use collective "the deranged", it's like "mentally deranged") directed at anybody not liking sth. by Mike? It should be freely allowed to criticize things by Mike without name-calling. Strangely, nobody seemed to raise the eye brow when people used it, as if it's fine thing to say & it's encouraged to say it. When instead it should be dealt with & be forbidden. Thanks in advance.

Edit: Funny that poster "You Kane You Commanded You Conquered" didn't chime in here. They read this thread & even replied to you, Watamushi, about adding Paley sessions. It's poster "Dick Rising" at PS, moderator too. They should've said sth., not kept silence about this highly serious issue. Sth. tells me that, if it was super respected poster, you both would reply quickly to this reasonable request. Which isn't fair. Anyway, talk with mods, discuss it in private at PS. Again, thanks in advance to any reply that the above request will get - either you, Watamushi, will reply &/ or You Kane.

Sorry to be late for replying to you - we have discussed this, and we do not consider the term not particularly malicious. On PSF, as long as people follow "no confrontational posting/personal attacks" board rule, people are allowed to criticize Mike, and likewise, allowed to criticize the excessive criticism on Mike.

Well, we aren't going to change things on PSF just because of what you, who are not the member of the forum to our knowledge, are saying here.

At this point, although we do not "encourage" people to use that particular term (and personally speaking, I don't like when people relate certain opinion to mental illness jokingly and I myself never say such thing, but that's just my notion, and I can't enforce that notion on everyone else), we consider nothing is over the line and need to be dealt with. In case someone goes over the line, we have dealt, and will deal with them immediately and appropriately.  

You misread things I said. I'm really not sure where you see anything about changing rules. I simply said deal with it. It's simple request. I mentioned it to you 1) knowing that you're mod at PS & the main reason 2) posters who use the term refer to posters here. & I took exception to that. Since I'm member in the said "here", I requested that mods at PS discuss it in private. But fine, I'm not PS member & that's what matters more than PS posters calling Smiley members "The Deranged". I'm Smiley member too, you know. I despise LBWL, few Mike vocals where he gets esp. nasal, new DIA with some chap, some original UTL tracks. Feel free to add me to "The Deranged" group & say again "nothing is over the line".

I looked into the posts which use that term, and they are about those who overly bash Mike, not about Smiley Smile members in general.  We allow no bashing at any other forum, including this forum, and we tell people to stop when people are at it, but this is not that case.

I think this is the best song on the album.  It is hard for me to not compare the other songs to the originals.  This demo of Still I Dream Of It is very powerful to me.

I don't regard this demo as something that surpasses the proper studio version, but it'd be surely nice to have all the Brian demo released someday. There can be surprises like 1975 In the Back of My Mind, and demos like I'm Begging You Please is just needed to be released.

This Could Be The Night - Even though I'm a fan of Nilsson, I'm not a big fan of this song. MFQ's version is not the best thing Spector did, IMO. This version is a little more listenable than that version, so I give it a 3. The pretty forced lead vocal here works better with Brian's original songs.

Modern Folks sang it like epic fail. Who assured they can sing? Laughable. Brian sings it way better but since the melody's still intact, even muddy indistinct dull arrangement's copied, it'll be 2.

This Song Wants to Sleep with You Tonight - 4.5/5, rounded up to 5.

It's a great song with Brian in pretty good vocal. The song is beautiful and the arrangement is strong. The lyrics might be a tad too suggestive, but I take it as a part of Brian's Love You-ish humor, rather than being risque.

Creedence good band with good songs & ... not-really-good vocalist. Fogerty's voice stylings bring the good things about band down. As such, Brian's lead by default is better. Hence 2. Why 2, not 4-5? Easy - don't like this specific song.

A strong 4. The only drawback for me is some of the production/instrumentation choices of Joe Thomas. Listening to the a cappella version really bears this out. How cool is it that an a cappella version was released? An oddity for Brian's solo career. This song also represents the biggest snub from Playback: The Brian Wilson Anthology. If a song needed to be dropped I would have chosen "The First Time". I like that they made an effort to include songs from each album, but including two songs from Live at the Roxy Theatre and omitting "Your Imagination" is bizarre. I also think it would've been cool for Brian to perform this song live in concert more often.

I really like Sunshine. Most of the song is at a level 3 for me (good, not mind-blowing) but the last minute or so (when the lyrics "baby don't be afraid to call", etc...start) is really beautiful. And the fade-out with the little music-box melody is gorgeous to me.

Our Prayer/Gee, I give it a 4. It is impossible to sound like the vintage beach boys, but Brian’s band did a great job doing those harmonies while making the sound their own.

BWPS is one of the few albums that I have to listen to all the way through or not at all. And hearing this song gets me excited that I’m about to listen to a sonic adventure that cascades across spectrums of emotions and thoughts. I kinda want to hear this album now...

The first time I heard the "Boys and Girls" section I knew that this was going to be a very special album. This version doesn't trump the original recordings, however, I find it to be genuinely "happier" (joyful? gleeful?) sounding than the original recordings.

I think I prefer the originals to this due to the earlier vocals (actual Beach Boys) and Brian nailed the 'River Deep Mountain High' vibe that he was going for. Whereas the BWPS version is more atmospheric due to the mix. Still a great track to start the album off with.

Old Master Painter is not a BW song.

However, I think it could be argued that My Only Sunshine is. I consider it an 'answer record' (Daddy's Home/Thousand Miles Away - Peggy Sue/Peggy Sue Got Married - Work With Me Annie/Annie Had A Baby). There were plenty of those in the 50's & 60's.
Brian's melody is completely different from Governor Davis's, as is the chord progression. Yes, the lyrics are similar, but different in tense.  Musically, it's an all Brian composition.

It occurs to me that from Our Prayer/Gee you get to That Same Song.

I can't imagine how hard it was to try and emulate the original sound of this track, but Brian's band did a stellar job of it. This re-recording has that "new" feel to it, but it is as close to the original as you can get for being a cover.

What can one say about this incredible track whether it be the original(my favorite) or the BWPS version. Perfection at every turn.  :bw

It's difficult to pull individual tracks off of Smile and rate them because they were part of movements as released on BWPS, not exactly album tracks or individual tracks you'd play on their own. But - Cabinessence is one of the most monumental recordings of the past 60 years if not the pop era in general. What was great in 2004-5 was to hear it *in context* and not as a throwaway track grafted onto 20/20 because the band needed material. It sounded in its place and time versus sounding like a track that came down from Mars or something.

And the fact it was mostly recorded in 1966...seriously, is there much in popular music to compare to how progressive and innovative this track sounds as it was recorded in 1966?

I still am amazed at how the band pulled this one off both live and in the studio for the BWPS project. Definitely 5 stars.

I think that's the most incredible thing about the whole of BWPS: all the pieces fit together and absolutely nothing sounds out of place. And that's such a crazy thing to pull off on an album of 17 songs whose style ranges from Americana, Hawaiian, harmony/barbershop, experimental/mainstream pop, almost rap ("Abash and forth a starboard course with north abeam, sherry of course"), classical, children's music (barnyard), experimental/horror, and I don't even know what to classify 'Surf's Up' as. The entirety completely fits together yet the styles are all so varied. And Cabin Essence seems to be be all of this in one song (it has the rhythmic drive and "edit" style of 'Good Vibrations', the 'Truck Drivin Man' is akin to the 'On A Holiday' rap, the coda is like some Americana fused with India fused with classical).

Love love love it.

Brian sings so poignantly on this track, and the melding of the trumpet, harmonies, and the harpsichord (even if its a MIDI harpsichord) works perfectly. The fake harpsichord actually gives the album more whimsy - the original is almost creepy (although still beautiful) whereas the MIDI version has this bright charm to it that isn't on the '66 version.

To clarify, that is not a MIDI harpsichord sound, in fact far from it. The sounds heard on the studio version were some of the same sounds originally requested and custom-created for taking the Smile tour on the road. The harpsichord, Brian's detuned home piano heard all over Smiley and WH (and Friends), the mallet instruments like marimba/vibraphone, and others too...they were custom designed for the stage production so the sounds could be accessed and switched on the fly. The original studio tracks from 66-67 were used as the templates, and the technology used allowed the sounds to be shaped and built up according to the original reference recordings from the 60's. Kurzweil did the various jobs necessary to present Smile on stage as we saw and heard it, for reference just watch a Smile live video and check out the rigs they had on stage.

If I remember, those sounds designed for the road were done so well that they also went with them in the studio as heard on Wonderful, but that part can of course be clarified by those who were directly involved in the recordings. I just know personally who did the programming and shaping of those sounds, and he's one of the best in the business (someone I've known as a friend for 30 years and made music with in the past).

It was not MIDI, it was not a digital preset from a soundbank, etc - It was made specifically from and for the original tracks so they could be played live.

As far as the track on BWPS...Yes, 5 stars, but with an asterisk because I consider the more stripped down version heard on the GV box set to be one of the most beautiful recordings of all time, and I think all of that comic "rock with me henry" stuff cluttered it up too much...but the way it was presented in context on BWPS warrants the 5 stars since that's what Brian apparently wanted in '67 versus the more elegant version on that box set.

Thanks much, Guitarfool! When I got into Smile and started listening to BWPS I read a lot about how it was a MIDI harpsichord, and I remember reading quite a few angry comments about how "unfaithful" the BWPS harpsichord sound was to the original. Seeing Darian play the keyboard during those shows (and knowing nothing about how they put this show together) I didn't really question the idea that it was MIDI. Even based on the original instruments, I still say that it sounds so much brighter and charmed (for lack of a better term) than the original recordings, but that's probably due to the recording process?

Hey Wata, I think you posted "Friends" but still enjoyed it as well.

Really like this song but prefer the original due to the dominant presence of the bass on the original. In the original the bass nears the levels of the 'Don't Talk' heartbeat, and in the BWPS version it is buried in the mix. Anywho, that's just my personal opinion.

Song For Children fits perfectly between Wonderful and Child, helps really pull together the spiritual suite.

As for Surf's Up,

the coda on this one is incredible! 2005 was probably the most perfect time for Brian to work on this, as his voice in so many of the songs is perfectly on point. Though his voice during the Disney/Gershwin era was fantastic too.

The harmonious coda was jaw dropping for me when I first heard this, and still is in ways. He's singing about eating vegetables but my goodness it sounds so beautiful! The 2011 SMiLE version is much more diverse/experimental, yet still cohesive. Yet the BWPS version has a real charm to it, too.

5. One of very few songs in the category Masterpieces that I don't like to listen to due it being loaded with so much emotion. Definitely about Carl and Dennis no matter what Brian might have said in a one syllable answer interview to an interviewer who didn't engage him. Simple but effective lyrics and melody, culminating in the oh so true statement that there's never enough time for the ones that you love, itself only repeated three times though I wish it would've gone on forever.

A bit late to the party, but I've been listening to No Pier Pressure this week after a year or two's absence and I find it still holds up surprisingly well. It's crammed full of enjoyable songs and lovely vocals. It's got a nice overall sound with lots of variety, and even the oddball 'guest' tracks like Runaway Dancer don't feel as jarring as they might have on first listen. As an album I'd give it a 4 but a very strong 4.

3. Brian's career without BBs is good. Better with but without it's nevertheless good. Few bad choices, esp. Disney. Really glad that Paley sesh. didn't realize as official album - good decision. Here's wishing new record will be, that No Pier Pressure isn't tag yet.
