Hi Wonder if any of you have actually sequenced Pets Sounds album so that it does chart the rise and fall of a relationship in order
Would be great to see what we would all come up with, And also you can use one or two tracks from two years past and present (!964-1968) to give it more scope. Looking forward to what will crop up cheers  Grin

Did it back in the seventies, with a cassette and using just the album tracks . Once you excise "SJB", it's not hard.

Doesn't it kind of do it anyway? Like, it seems to jump in somewhere near the middle, but it works as little snapshots of the stresses and joys of a serious relationship experienced for the first time.

WIBN is possibly the first kernel of recognisation that their love is getting serious - the slightly casual term 'Wouldn't It Be Nice?' is the mind trying to sugarcoat the fact that our male protagonist is falling heavily in love. You Still Believe In Me, well, couples fight and men have self-doubt and guilt, which makes it part and parcel with 'That's Not Me'. Don't Talk is again fairly obvious - a normal night in, which they are becoming more accustomed to. Going out doesn't have the same appeal as it used to. IWFTD shows a maturation of understanding that the protagonist of the earlier songs lacked. He gets, and seems to accept, that she has loved before and that these feelings are complicated. He's willing to understand her feelings on a level more than the 'Oh sh*t, sorry' that YSBM represents.
Let's Go Away For A While is something couples often think together. Can we afford this? Can you get the time off work? Where do you want to go? Wouldn't it be nice?
Sloop is difficult in this framework. Possibly represents the difficulties of 'going out' once in a relationship. Hedonism doesn't hold the same appeal, is fraught with difficulty, obviously can't dance with other girls, and instead of roaming round Nassau town you would rather have her head on your shoulder. Let me go home!
Enough has been written about GOK. It is possibly the first seed of doubt. This may not last forever. What does? The stars? But he resolves that he loves her, possibly stronger than before. The cliche, as beautiful as it is, is maybe a sign of how seriously he is taking himself though. Like WIBN, his subconscious is coming up short when it comes up with ways to express it's feeling - the original, unique declarations in Don't Talk or You Still Believe In Me thrown off for some grand cliche. He may not always love her.
Possibly more difficult than Sloop, IKTA is probably about how unfufilled his friends seem to him - no doubt they are carrying on in the same way they always have done. Tricky. A nascent idea of the things expressed in IJWMFTT.
The break-up occurs. An accquaintance decides to make a move on the old GF, unknowingly. Still bitter, our protagonist lists the horrible things about love. It makes you feel like crap. It's all anxiety, nervousness, and fear. And then it disappears. But the glorious cacophony of the chorus belies the joy of love, which is apparent although he won't admit it.
Time for the self loathing. Grow a beard. Drink in the afternoon. Be irritable. Question why it all went wrong. IJWMFTT belies the feelings of alienation and despair of a breakup on a grand scale. His friends don't fufill the social need as she did, therefore they are fairweather. The heartbreak in the chorus is again a maturation of feeling beyond the grand cliche. This is genuine heartbreak.
But, eventually it passes. It may take a month or so, but there is light. Your friends seem cool again. You look better clean shaven. You probably shouldn't have bought the complete works of Nitszche on amazon in a drunken haze, but so long as people don't know he's a raging misogynist it will make you look clever. The bloke down the off license doesn't recognise you anymore. Your old records make you happy again. Pet Sounds!

But there is still inevitable reminiscing. You'll see her in the street, and where did that long hair go?

Yes, Andrew, I agree;it would be sort of anachronistic...I think Good Vibrations is so high voltage that it might have upset the proverbial applecart, and might have positioned wonderful work in a shadow, stealing the thunder of this gem, but "Country Air" might have fit nicely on Pet Sounds and is not an AK-47 as is Good Vibrations, which needed its own space. Sloop John B, Caroline, No, Wouldn't It Be Nice and God Only Knows needed their own airplay. 

Of course this is retrospective, and given that the tracks are sort of set in stone, it would be like rearranging the volumes of the Old Testament.  It is an interesting concept in terms of "what if?" the tracking was different.  The Pet Sounds Sessions Box Set might be the fertile pasture in which to, for personal listening, to re-arrange alternative tracks for an ipod, Zune, etc.   Wink

I would never "mess with that formula! "  LOL

That's Not Me might make a nice live "unplugged" lead-off (single, in the sense of American Baseball) for fans who know every word of that album, but WIBN gives Pet Sounds that initial punch to get the listener's attention...

And, I am intrigued as to your placement in terms of 1st position...

It is a great stream-of-consciousness song...

I might have started with Sloop John B to invite the listeners on a musical voyage  Wink

I would go with this lineup except I would put GV first, because at that point he hasn't met the girl yet; he is experiencing an attraction from a distance and picking up vibes from her.  Then, in WIBN, they've become an item and they're dreaming of a time when they can take their relationship to another level. 

This would also make sense on a commercial level, because with a powerhouse smash like GV leading off the album, there is no way a person listening for the very first time could NOT be captivated, and want to hear the rest of the album.  With WIBN after it, would have a definite 1-2 punch!

And GOK would probably work well in the #10 slot there.  And then I'd put Here Today right after it (signs of doubt in the relationship), and then IJWMFTT (which, as pointed out earlier, is a manifestation of self doubt as the relationship disintegrates), and then ending on Carline No, for obvious reasons.


You realize were all going to hell for suggesting the repainting of a masterpiece!  We're all doomed to listen to Rick Astley tunes for eternity!  Shocked

What the heck is going on with the programming here? 
I see what should be five posts quoted and yet all I see are two statements; and when I add this, it  gets wrapped  into the previous quotes, like I'm part of all that... and it makes it look, at least to my eyes, as if what I'm saying is actually the 2nd quote from letsmakeit, and everyone after that had nothing to say

I had trouble yesterday and had to go into "edit" a couple of times to "unlock" the italics...twice. 

It seemed "stuck" and would not "release..."

Wow, this so perfectly captures my personal experience with this song, and also the album, from my very first time of hearing it.  (Amazing, too, how often the song can transport me to that first time, and that moment, in my life...)  I've mentioned before how my puberty, as it were, paralleled the development of The Beach Boys/Brian.  I heard, and immediately bought, "409" almost as quickly as it hit New York, and I must have been all of 12 or 13.  It perfectly matched my need-for-speed, and my obvious awareness that I was born on the wrong coast.

Cut to "Pet Sounds", and I ironically discovered it while walking with this chick, (and I'm now all of 15), on the the very day that I asked her to go steady with me!  The Beach Boys, meaning essentially Brian, had developed & grown right along with me - and they had better, because The Beatles & Stones had come along right on their heels, and Brian managed not to just keep par, but to be constantly raising the bar, on what was happening in both music and in the world!  I mean, things like "Let Him Run Wild", heck, even the hits, seemed so much like a personal soundtrack as I was living the sixties, but nothing quite prepared me/us for "Pet Sounds".  If only it had been courageous enough to have been the teenage opera that it is anyway; sometimes even "Sloop John B." made sense.

It was interesting, too, that Brian was almost ten years older then me, but seemed to be emotionally maturing at just about the same rate as me.  So, while he may have been slipping on a wedding ring, and I was just sliding on an ankle bracelet, we were both experiencing things for the very first time... Thank the lord he was able to capture those feelings in song.

....it works as little snapshots of the stresses and joys of a serious relationship experienced for the first time.

WIBN is possibly the first kernel of recognisation that their love is getting serious - the slightly casual term 'Wouldn't It Be Nice?' is the mind trying to sugarcoat the fact that our male protagonist is falling heavily in love. You Still Believe In Me, well, couples fight and men have self-doubt and guilt, which makes it part and parcel with 'That's Not Me'.


Wow, this so perfectly captures my personal experience with this song, and also the album, from my very first time of hearing it.  (Amazing, too, how often the song can transport me to that first time, and that moment, in my life...)  I've mentioned before how my puberty, as it were, paralleled the development of The Beach Boys/Brian.  I heard, and immediately bought, "409" almost as quickly as it hit New York, and I must have been all of 12 or 13.  It perfectly matched my need-for-speed, and my obvious awareness that I was born on the wrong coast.

Cut to "Pet Sounds", and I ironically discovered it while walking with this chick, (and I'm now all of 15), on the the very day that I asked her to go steady with me!  The Beach Boys, meaning essentially Brian, had developed & grown right along with me - and they had better, because The Beatles & Stones had come along right on their heels, and Brian managed not to just keep par, but to be constantly raising the bar, on what was happening in both music and in the world!  I mean, things like "Let Him Run Wild", heck, even the hits, seemed so much like a personal soundtrack as I was living the sixties, but nothing quite prepared me/us for "Pet Sounds".  If only it had been courageous enough to have been the teenage opera that it is anyway; sometimes even "Sloop John B." made sense.

It was interesting, too, that Brian was almost ten years older then me, but seemed to be emotionally maturing at just about the same rate as me.  So, while he may have been slipping on a wedding ring, and I was just sliding on an ankle bracelet, we were both experiencing things for the very first time... Thank the lord he was able to capture those feelings in song.
Sweet Ed thanks for sharing that with us. I got to say that after hearing the album for the first time at 18 I felt like I was emotionally maturing too Smiley
