Back in the "early" days of the Internet, there were these "mailing lists"--which were like this discussion forum, but in email form--you'd get a digest version each couple of days with the latest ramblings.

I was a member of the "Pet Sounds" list, which had a lot of knowledgeable and (mostly) friendly posters (with the exception of one very well-known BB author/expert)!

Just curious...how many here were part of that mailing list?

I still have a whole bunch of stuff saved on my hard drive from those days...wonder if anybody else has too!

1996-2002?
And yes, I must still have some saved somewhere.

Do you think it would be out of line to post stuff here that was from there? I think it'd be an interesting flashback for some...

I was on the list from about 1997 - 2001, then faded like the Beatles of Hey Jude.

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

I was on the PSML from about 1998 to 2001 or 02.  Good times.  I even contributed some tracks to the Net Sounds III & IV compilations, covering "Don't Worry Baby", "I'll Be He's Nice" (on III) and "All I Wanna Do" (with my friend Julie on vocals) and "Do It Again" (with my old high school band Smidgen), the latter two on IV.  Had a lot of fun recording those tracks and sharing notes with other fellow musicians on the list.  Wasn't there a music project going on here for a while a couple years back?

Yeah, I was on  the PSML, going back to at least 1996 I'd say, although I don't recall exactly when the list started.  Was also a member of the now infamous Brad Elliott's Surf's Up mailing list, which was a "by invitation only" list, requiring new members to be nominated by an existing member, seconded by another member, and then not opposed by even one existing member.  I was also a regular reader of the AOL BBs board back in the 90's.

Who was the unfriendly "very well-known BB author/expert" on the PSML?

Yes, go ahead and post some of the old stuff from the PSML.  Isn't that where the Jack Rieley posts came from?  It was fascinating to read his recollections and perspectives on the BBs.

On the PSML since 1998 - still am, although it's a shadowy shadow of its former self - and was invited to the Surf's Up list. Seen a lot of the formerly major MBs fall by the wayside: American Band used to be the #1, then the focus shifted to the old Cabin Essence board, with a side of Smile Shop (original) - and of course, the legendary Male Ego MB. There were giants in those days...

And who could forget the Smile Research Lab as run by April (although some thought she was a he).

A lot of fun to be had, lot of excellent primary research done, and not a few friendships sundered in the process, for reasons that seemed justifable at the time, less so now. Given that it's all winding down, maybe bridges should be rebuilt and olive branches extended before it's all too late. Some of us aren't getting any younger/healthier.

Yes I am a member of this mailing list as well. In fact I've been best friends with the chairman who started it. Mr. Lively and I go back at least 20 years or more. We knew each other on the old PRODIGY computer bbs back in the day. It doesnt seem that long ago but it has been that long. Looking at my gray hair..... sighing.

I wasn't on the PSML, but i've been a habitue of BBs message boards from 1997, when i was a teenager.

Was the American Band board the one run by JohnB? He put up with so much crap until finally he didn't want to deal with it any more, understandably, and the Male Ego board started up like a Phoenix from the ashes.

There were similar rival boards all set up at the same time in the wake of JohnB's demise: Sir Chocolate Thunder's Barnyard (red colour scheme), and Ken W's Sunflower board (yellow), but Junkstar's Male Ego board was the one that took off.

the BB Britain board was good for a while until it got overrun by spammers and viruses.

The late 90s were tough years in the internet. You couldn't say you liked Mike Love, or that you prefer Love You to Pet Sounds without being insulted.

I think this was at Mike wheeler's board... A bb tv appearance. The guys are introduced. When Mike is mentioned he says "aquí", Spanish for "here". Apparently some deaf fan understood "the key", which led to a number of angry posts against ML for stating that he was the key member of the group.

OK, now that I've dug through my "archives"...it looks like this was calle the SMILE Mailing List instead? Or did one become the other? Heck, I dunno!

The one I'm thinking of had a lot of cool stuff by one Dave Prokopy, and some rather insulting rants by a ruinated columnist, whose name is slightly escaping me at the moment... Cheesy

As soon as I can tidy some of these up (they're saved as weird, sloppy text files), I'll post some!
