Mike Love's official Facebook page has just posted this link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjWyFBoEOXs

... which of course begs the question - do they know it's an unreleased track ?  Have to say, it's the cleanest version I've heard in some 20 years.  Roll Eyes

Wooah...never knew they'd done this, when was it recorded, sounds circa 1985-90 ? Assume this wasn't a tie-in to the film Calendar Girls (as the Youtube background picture would suggest) ?

I have to say that's a mighty interesting YouTube account... Lots of stuff that I've never heard with such a great sound quality on any bootleg probably sounds a lot better than it does on all those bootlegs that I've never heard.

Wow, fascinating indeed. Please tell me someone is going to rip this stuff before it gets taken down...

P.S. Calendar Girls was recorded between August and September of '78 (per Bellagio).

This just shows how dumb the BBs were at mixing Brian's late 70s genius. "Palisades Park"? Carl says, "mix out those great chimes, it's way too beautiful and Spectorish." "Calendar Girl"? Carl says, "Brian just wrote a brilliant synthesizer part, let's make sure you can barely hear it." And they wonder why Brian would go home.

It may not be a Beach Boys expert putting this stuff up there. “Moon Down”? It’s actually “Moon Dawg” from the Surfin’ Safari album. Best quality sound I’ve ever heard. I’d like to have the whole album the same quality sound as this!

Same with “Walkin’”. The sound quality is much better sounding than the boot. And "I just Got My Pay" – pretty darn clear! And “Lookin’ Down the Coast" too. Am I hearing things or is this better sounding than on the boots?

“Blowin’ In The Wind”. Is this from SOT 10, the Party outtakes or a different version? Is this from 1965? Al sounds great!

Break Away. Damn, those guys were so tight on the vocals!!

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

I didn't really hear  much of an improvment on Walkin', to be honest.

Ahem...  Thank you, Mr. Love! : "There's also a version of "Calendar Girl" that was recorded at Criteria Studios, at the very beginning of the sessions for L.A. Light.  Seems like someone has played it for me before, and it wasn't at all the quality I remembered it being in the studio.http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,9734.msg169283.html#msg169283  "... the same can be said for the early versions of songs from 15 Big Ones."

Here's the truly interesting bit - "Calender Girl" was put up on Mike's FB page yesterday pm UK time. When I went to YouTube, guess when it'd been put up ? Yup... yesterday, and when I listened I was the 18th person to do so.

Now, my surname may not be Holmes but I think I can see dots being joined here...

Edit: just listened a bit more. "Califirnia Dreamin'" is the original, Radio Shack version from 1982/3, just as "California Callin'" is the original version from the initial mix of the 1985 album that was rejected by both the band and Caribou. All the BB stuff went up yesterday. All of it is in a quality that ranges from excellent to near-master.

Are you suggesting "spoilers"?

Which funnily enough is one of River Song's catchphrase. And the BBs worked on a version of River Song.  Whoops... too long in front of a a computer screen...

I Just Got My Pay sounds very good  -  but Til I Die has some sound quality probs not unlike the booted version. Seems to have been edited down though to just the pertinent audible vocal parts -  no gaps but incomplete vox too.

Chapel of Love has gone up within the last hour and (so far -  I'm listening as I type) sounds like the released 15 BOs version.

Anyone hearing mixes/version they've not heard before?

Edit – The guy's based in the Netherlands according to his profile – I'm guessing just a very good collection of boots, ands the fact that whoever's running Mike's FB page assumed it was the LBWL version of Calendar Girls.

Timing is exactly the same as the SoT Party box version. Guessing that's the source.

Ha that was brilliant. Not sure many folks her understood that reference.  LOL

Sandy She Needs Me doesn't sound terribly interesting without Brian's raspy vocal.

Er... listen again - different track, different recording. This is "Sandy...", not "Sherry...".  There is actually a lead vocal recorded for this, by my ol' pal Will Brision.

I must say I haven't listened to "I just got my pay" in ages.  I forgot how much I loved that song!  It really is a fun song, especially the part "Monday morning I'm up and at 'em..."   Anyone else like this song?

Also, just listening again to Sandy She Needs Me...wow...probably one of my favorite unreleased tracks by the group.  The ending is just spine chilling...so so good and it went unfinished...mind boogling....

Nice to hear the 1974 version of Good Timin' in such good quality.  To be honest, I think the backing track sounds better (and more commercial!) compared to the released version.

Nope - the tracks for "Sherry" and "Sandy" are entirely different recordings. "Sherry" has no '65 bvs.

Oh really? I always assumed they were the same. The backing tracks sound so similar. Must give them both another listen.

Not having heard the '70 version of "Back Home" before, I was surprised they reused the verse melody from "Merry Christmas, Baby". While previously unreleased melodies were fair game for rewrites and re-recordings throughout the 60s and early 70s, I can't think of another Beach Boys track from this period that blatantly reuses a released song's melody. Maybe that's one of the reasons "Back Home" didn't make the cut until '76, by which time Brian rewrote the verse melody.
