Along time ago I took a stab at the costs of SMiLE, not including the recording of GV.

$21,600: 400,000 booklets
$64,820: musicians and vocalist at scale
$25,200 est.: 420,000 album jackets in Capitol storage: card sleeves with 4c front liner + b/w back liner
?$20,600: studio rental, $100? per hour for 206 studio hours [w/out OT if applicable]
$132,220: total

That would be about $865,000 in 2009 dollars.

What did albums cost in 1967? $3.99? If the Boys got a 5% royalty from album sales, at $3.99 each, it would have taken 660K+ album sales to break even. Surely that's not right, I've cocked it up somewhere.
