The Beach Boys frontman Mike Love and keyboard player Tim Bonhomme have fired back at reports the band has taken to lip-syncing at concerts.
Fans of the group accused the bandmates of miming at a high-profile concert in Australia on Saturday night, but Bonhomme, who also serves as the act's tour manager, insists the allegations are simply not true.
He tells WENN, "We do not lip sync. I want to make it 100 per cent clear that The Beach Boys do not and never have lip-synced their concerts.
"They have been touring since 1961 and generally have performed in more than a hundred cities a year since the beginning. I guess we should take it as a compliment that it sounded so good."
And longtime Beach Boys leader Love adds, "Throughout the duration of my stay in Australia I heard nothing but positive feedback on our show... We pride ourselves on providing a great live show to our millions of fans around the world and spent time that day soundchecking our vocals to ensure a great live mix. In our almost 50 years of performing The Beach Boys have never lip-synced and we are not about to start."
The lip-syncing claims came from fans who attended the Gold Coast 600 concert, which The Beach Boys headlined.
Reports suggest many concertgoers left the Southport Parklands venue before the end of the show, with some accusing the band of lip-syncing their set.
A statement from the event's management team reads, "Due to ongoing speculation surrounding the Saturday evening performance of The Beach Boys, the management team of the Armor All Gold Coast 600... would like to unequivocally state that the performance by the Beach Boys on Saturday evening was a live performance.
"Suggestions that The Beach Boys were lip-syncing are false. A slight delay between the vision being played on the big screens at the 600 Sounds presented by Hard Rock precinct and what was happening on stage did occur, as sometimes happens with live performances, and this may have contributed to the confusion felt by some event-goers."

That is a good joint statement by Mike and Tim. In my home I have cable boxes and several TVs which are direct lined into the wall.
The broadcasts are "sent out" at the same time, but one TV has the audio and video "come through" before the other with the cable box. There is a "delay" of a second or so because it it not transmitted through another device.
This is the only way I can get my "head around" what happened, because I have no technical sound system training or background.
What is surprising is that people who listen to this music and discuss it in the greatest detail, will not give the band the "benefit of the doubt," and stand on the side of the experts who analyzed the situation and, while they did not say it DID NOT happen, they would not say that it DID. They would not put their professional credentials on the line to say they were not singing. It was sensationalism at its worst and which makes real journalists look bad.
Those "Doubting Thomases" who rely on having seen the Boys in the 90's and prior to that time, and haven't seen a live show since then, might consider taking a leap of faith to see a show to judge for themselves. Absent that, there is enough live performance catalog on YouTube, and close up, if there is any doubt that they are singing. There are hundreds of them. All those clips could not be a false representation of the shows.
Professional integrity is a big deal. They often come off the stage dripping wet with sweat from performing. Those who lip sync don't break a sweat.

After a show in Sweden 2009 some people claimed that the Beach Boys lip synched. The guy who said this pointed out a couple of songs and the fact that Mike was standing too far from the microphone. It was easy to solve and respond to as those were songs where Mike didn't sing lead....
I think a lot of people gets confused with a group singing complex harmonies when the Jumbotron guy zooms in on Mike.
Re DVD/TV performances:
DVD shows often includes footage from different shows edited to make it as good as possible...
The Brian Wilson on Tour DVD even features clothes changes between lyrics and refrain!

Needless to say, a cadre of Blooies fell on this tawdry piece of bad journalism as a starving man on bread and used it to once more trot out the infantile "Brian good/everyone else bad/Mike evil" party line. Notably some idiot called John Potter who, according to some of his posts, is in a BB tribute band (anyone see some heavy irony here ?
), and is definitely something of a post-whore.

Definition of post-whore; one who posts merely to see their name on a monitor, irrespective of content.

[/quote) So Potter's posts are "irrespective of content"??
And you'll decide what is and isn't??
Wham!-just tripped over a big pile of arrogance.

Inasmuchas as he clearly doesn't know WTF he's talking about (something that's been noted higher up the food chain, btw) - I asked him, quite politely (I know, not like me at all, but there it is) to point me at some M&B gigs that supported his claim that they'd lip-synched before and surprise !, he ignored the question - yeah, I'd tag that 'irrespective of content', as the useful content is 0%. As stated, he's a member of a BB tribute band, which for some reason I find hugely amusing. But then, I'm quirky like that...
