There is a version of the "sleep a lot..." chant that has a full instrumental backing track. It's not the "piano/whistle" section. The one I'm talking about is more uptempo and has drums. It would pretty much be the coolest thing ever if I could somehow get an mp3/flac version that is looped so it goes on for thirty seconds or so. It would please me a great deal.  Cool

Hello Jay, I think I know what you mean. It's on a bootleg called "Smile Instrumental" and It's one of the best ones esp The Heroes And Villians Track and Vegetables.
The Vegetables Track starts off with the early piano version without the vocal of course, Then go's into the "Uptempo" one your talking about which has a very echoed drum sound every fourth beat and what sounds like a toy piano in it too very child like, Then it go's into an organ, and bass line, with a rattle sound too, Then into Joy of Joys the vegetables (Fade) section as heard on the Hawthorne ca CD. So Four different sections Jay and whoever edited this track and the bootleg has my thumbs up Grin btw it wasn't me!!
Here is the fade section http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqm6cKk8qwA Enjoy

I've been looking for that bootleg, if it's the one I'm thinking of. It has the weird slide guitar part on "Worms". Although I don't remember the "sleep a lot" section on there. It's not the link you posted. It has a weird quality to it. Almost like it's a "monitor mix". You hear the group singing the "chant" with the drums as you said, and with what sounds like a xylophone, or some kind of "tinkering" piano. But the clip I have heard is very short. I'm looking for a long looped section.

Edit: Let the countdown for "thread implosion by way of the mods" begin!  Razz

Yes Jay it's the one I've been writing about. In the middle of "Worms" It's got the slide guitar part. Whoever made this Bootleg simply edited different sections and pieces together themselves It's not a "Monitor mix" or really sound like one to my ears but what do I know Smiley

The 'Fade To Vegetables' is, IMHO, one of the best pieces of SMiLE music, right up there with 'Grand Coolie Dam'. Beautiful pieces of music.

Totally argee!!! Which is why I'd made that video with both the Vegetable fade and Grand Coolie Dam together in one mix
BTW You must hear the Sessions for both of these breathtaking, esp the Grand Coolie Dam section. One for the New Smile CD fingers crossed!!! Grin

Which part is 'fade to vegetables?'  is it the 'vegetables tag' on the boxed set?

Part of it is on the end of the version on the box set, but there is a longer version of it.
