GM: Do you think Carl recognised how special he was as a musical talent?

AJ: I think he did. Carl had a definite sense of who he was, oh yeah... He just had this voice, this operatic tenor. Boy he could belt out a tune like his uncle Carl. I used to know his uncle. He used to deliver bread for a bakery in L.A. , Carl Korthof, Audree's brother. Boy, that guy had such a great voice. He'd sing in that bakery truck when he'd come by and the smell of fresh bread on that truck – those are the great old days. So I think Carl got his voice from that side of the family, obviously. I don't think Murry could carry a tune as I remember. He was just kind of a gruff old guy. Audree had such a beautiful voice [whistles in wonder]. Wow! She had the voice, she played the organ at home. I shouldn't say that Murry wasn't talented, it's just that the Korthof side of the family seem to have that musical gene.

GM: What do you miss most about Carl?

AJ: Oh, just his balance. Without his balance and his centre of energy the whole thing just flew apart like a fly wheel without a whatever. What I miss most about Carl is his friendship. Phone calls, getting ready for dinner. We'd always go out for dinner.

I wonder how soon after Carl cleaned up in 78, Al Jardine bailed from the Love faction.

"Over the years, I've been accused of not supporting our new music from this era (67-73) and just wanting to play our hits. That's complete b.s......I was also, as the front man, the one promoting these songs onstage and have the scars to show for it."
