I agree with what IH-A and Chevy are trying to say. I wasn't for removing the picture as it didn't personally offend me (and even if it did, I wouldn't have wanted it removed but someone got to it before I did so my hands are, in a rare unfortunate situation, tied). I do think there was a general overreaction and a much more offensive display of hypocrisy; as I mentioned before, people here have compared Michael Love to Hitler with no controversy.

Chevy put it best with regards to taking the piss out of people like Hitler.

Absolutely.

Our own propaganda machine in the late 30's/early 40's actively encouraged the lampooning of Hitler. We were facing him alone, (though obviously aid convoys from the U.S were greatly appreciated) To this day it's amazing we weren't invaded. People laughed at Hitler, and made songs up about him as a morale boosting exercise.
It stuck, and children in this country still sing rude songs about him. It is cultural, so maybe now you can understand were I'm coming from - Or are you disrespecting my culture!!!! Only jesting. There's been enough political correctness here today

I judge by what you do. You may be a terrific person and I truly hope that you are. This was poor taste and the only thing that I am judging. You think Bruce would appreciate what you did? Also, today is Independence Day here in the U.S.. We, as well as Great Britain paid a huge price in lives lost or wounded fighting against what Hitler stood for, not to mention all who died in the concentration camps. I guess some of us see Hitler as heinous and not a comic character.

Congratultions are in order to George Washington and the Independance Army, for defeating that evil Hitler, oh hang on, it's us English you are celebrating defeating. I should be offended, I am offended. Moderator, I want this reference to independance day removing, It is offensive to English people Angry

Do I need to point out I'm joking?

Ahh yes, independence day. The day we (and by we I mean a few dozen white politicians who have all been dead for hundreds of years) declared independence from mean old Britain (meaning some long dead white politicians) so that everyone (meaning white land-owners) could be free to express themselves however they saw fit (meaning making fun of Bruce Johnston by giving him a Hitler head). I love that day!

I didn't take anything down; let's make that perfectly clear. You're gonna have to poll the other mods on that. I wasn't even aware of this stuff going on until noon EST.

Having fun at the beach listening to the Beach Boys really brings home Brian's genius and really shows the car and surf songs are strong as the later material in a different way.

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

Indeed. I finally started getting back into the surf albums a few weeks ago - Lonely Sea, Surfin USA, Surfin Safari - all sound just as good as anything Brian ever did.

I used to have two perceptions of Brian - the Surfin USA Brian, and the pot smoking genius Brian....after listening to a lot of the earlier stuff lately my perception has changed - he's the same guy all along (just with a bit more influence later on in his 60s career)...for the mostpart.

My point regarding Independence Day was that many American soldiers died in World War II defending the freedoms we originally fought for during our revolution. I do not have a problem lampooning Hitler, but sticking his face on Bruce is not lampooning Hitler, it is disrespecting Bruce. how come you answered everything else I posted, but not that point?

@ The RealBeachBoy, there is no political bullshit here. Millions died at the hands of Hitler. Historians worldwide will all agree with that fact.

I suppose I'm not that bothered about Bruce Johnson, I don't like him, I don't dislike him. He's just there really.  He's a nice guy who never hurt anyone.

And I suppose that's what is funny about sticking a Hitler head on him. It makes no sense really, and that is what I find funny. I didn't really analyze it at the time. It was really just about the moustache.......

Bruce is a big boy, who has made lots of many being in The Beach Boys. I can't see him locking himself in the toilet and weeping like a baby because someone on a nerdy internet site stuck a Hitler head on him. He might be mildly puzzled, but accepting of the fact there are a lot of wierdos online....

And someone should let the writers of The Simpsons, and Mel Brooks, and many others in the world of comedy know that Hitler is a no-go area.

I never said any such thing. Lampoon Hitler as much as you like. Open up a new thread, and keep Hitler's head on his own body. What you did here was not lampooning Hitler, at least not to me and some others.

Before people leap down my throat, that was obviously a joke. I'm from the UK and Hitler is a source of fun here. Probably because for 2 years we stood alone against him.
Laughter in the face of adversity.

The logic behind the picture, in case people didn't get it, was "moustache". Hitler's is pretty famous, Bruce's isn't.

And if there is anyone on this board who was personally affected by Hitler, which I doubt, then I apologise if I have reminded you of his existence, and I would suggest you do not watch Channel 4, or The History Channel, he pops up there a lot!

OK, so you removed the picture, fine. Well next time I don't find something funny, I'll lobby to have that removed.

Censorship for no reason other than "I don't find that funny"

How disappointing.

@ Iron Horse-Apples : it was nothing personal, and I was aware that you didn't mean to provoke or insult anybody, but just to make a lighthearted joke. To be honest: I've seen more shocking things being posted here than this (and not doing anything about it). A picture of Hitler on itself isn't provoking or insulting at all. And I wasn't offended personally either.
But I did ask myself the question "what if I were the one who's head on the picture was replaced with one of Hitler?" I wouldn't have been to happy about that, even if I knew it was meant to be a joke. And that's why I thought I'd do a sensible thing by removing that picture.
