Original cut of Goin' On

I've heard the original tracking of Goin' On that sounds to be an upbeat tune and then kinda slows down. I was thinking this was Brian's cut of the track, were there vocals added? I haven't heard this tape in some time. Now I've always read that Bruce took Goin' On and redid it, and that's the song we have today on the KTSA album, am I right?  Maybe that's why Brian doesn't wanna sing it.

Is it true Brian doesn't wanna sing it? Or are you just guessing that? I like the earlier version a lot better too, with the drum breaks and all, but I don't think they did vocals for it. I'm sure somebody else knows more than myself though.

But yeah, I dont know why Bruce changed this, and also apparently, "Oh Darlin" which he apparently transformed from a samba to that plodding piece of garbage. I dont know the full scoop on this either.

And while we are at it, can somebody explain to me how the Crystals "Little Boy" turned into "Sunshine"? Is the chord progression the same? Cuz the melody doesnt really seem to be anywhere close, and Brian's original and way more powerful and interesting track got replaced by that half-ass Buffett fake-reggae business. Anyways, any info?

I always thought of that older version as really strange and I can't imagine what the vocal arrangement and additional lyrics would have been like.

Well, I was actually referencing to another thread where I posted that Brian should sing Goin' On live, maybe he doesn't sing it because Bruce took it over...Bruce does make it sound like a real BW single though.

But yeah, I never knew how Little Boy/girl linked to Sunshine...somehow, I feel BW is the only one to answer this, he loves the morphing of his own tunes. 

I just recently 'got' how Trombone Dixie morphed into Had to Phone Ya...I had to listen to the session presented on the PS sessions box set, where Brian just has the string play their parts on the session, I finally heard how it linked to Had to Phone YA; quite genius.

Nothing to do with Brian. Bruce took the basic track they'd recorded for "Little Girl", edited it up to the length it is on the album, overdubbed it and there y'go - "Sunshine".

Actually, I believe it was "Goin' On" that started out as a samba (as written by Brian), then Bruce re-arranged it in it's present form.  I think the only change Bruce inflicted upon "Oh Darlin'" was to change the lead vocalist from Brian to Carl.  In the "Goin' Platinum" TV special, Bruce calls "Oh Darlin'" the most Brian Wilson-almost produced cut on the album, so I think it ended up pretty much the way Brian envisioned it, for better or for worse.  In the same special, Brian describes "Goin' On" as an example of how one person (himself) came up with an idea, and another person (Bruce) modified it.

Such an odd time in the BB era...where Bruce was calling a lot of the shots...nervously, yes. As he stated in that interview (promo for the whole album, interviews with all the guys), he was nervous to let guys hear the finished product.

Well, first, you need the tracking session of TD from the PS Boxed Set and the tracking session of Had to Phone Ya from a boot or youtube. listen to the part where Brian just has the strings play and listen to the strings part on Had to Phone Ya, I can't really put words to it, just listen, listen

He kinda did. Just like Brian copped the opening of the CROWS track GEE for Heroes and Villains, Brian and Mike copied the opening riff from the Corsairs SMOKEY PLACES and used it as the opening to SUNSHINE. The Corsairs track is on youtube if u want to listen to it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miy4zLQkS10&feature=related. And yes, the chord changes for Little Girl and Sunshine are the same. Mike came up with the idea of turning it into Sunshine. Just like he took Mike Come Back To LA and made it Some Of Your Love.
