Blondie Chaplin sat in with the Les Paul Trio last night (June 28th) at Manhattan's Iridium Jazz Club for a goosebump-inducing rendition of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile."
What a voice.

That would have been incredible to see & hear.

Mike's not a Hawthorne boy. The Hawthorne guys stuck together. The Wilsons and I always had a special bond. We felt like we were a team.

the pianist John Colianni is probably the best I've ever seen
sure would like to hear that.
you never know who might be sitting in the audience at that place. when i saw Les, Jimmy Buffett was there and got up to play a couple tunes. Les tore him apart, it was great. The man was 91 at the time, he didn't care for Jimmy's music, and he let everyone know it. Jimmy took it well and chuckled all the way to the bank and his MSG gig the next day.

Howie, I take it that Blondies voice is still good then? Love his voice, especially on Sail On Sailor and Carry Me Home.

Blondie's voice got better with age, in my opinion. Listen to his vocals on Ray Ohara's Picaresque album and the Skollie album Ostrich Man. And, if you find it, The Fragile Thread, his second, unreleased solo album. Blondie's vocals and songwriting have heavily improved.

Agreed, although I must say I was a tad disappointed with his 2006 "Between Us" album. A good one, but - having heard "Fragile Thread" already (which is fantastic!) - I had expected something more I guess.

Gotta say that I agree about those albums, too. I saw him perform "Fragile Thread" pretty much in its entirety, (in a little club in L.A., with Bernard Fowler as one of his back-up singers), and was so pissed he couldn't get it released. That caused me to be less than impressed by "Between Us", too. And I sure wish they'd get the second Flame album out some day! It's such a shame that such an incredibly talented guy can't get more recognition on his own...

And don't forget, you can see Blondie and his Skollie trio perform three songs on 'Anton Fig In the Groove' now available on DVD!!
Skollie is Blondie Chaplin, Keith Lentin and Anton Fig, and they perform one song (Law and Order) from the 1992 Ostrich Man album and two other songs which remain unreleased (Cool Cool Day & 1-2-3). All three songs are great straight forward rockers, no ballads here!!

Ostrich Man by Skollie is very hard to find. Same goes for Ray O Hara's Picaresque album (on which Blondie sings all the lead vocals). Nothing earthshaking maybe (like the 77 solo album), but not boring either.
