Fun fact: How many people do you know have The Beach Boys sharing a cd shelf with 2pac, Pink Floyd Marilyn Manson, Frank Sinatra, AND Brian Eno? :D

How about Nirvana, The Beach Boys, A Tribe Called Quest, Radiohead and Andy Wiliams?  That's a sample of what I have!

They ruined rock music the same way the Beatles ruined Motown.  Before Nirvana and including Nirvana, Rock was pretty good, afterwards it was all bad imitations of Nirvana.  My dad used to complain all the time how the Beatles changed music, so Motown died, lol.  I never quite got it, but he hated the Beatles because of that.
And I'm still PO'd at the Beatles for that! Grin

Yeah, he used to grumble about that all the time.  He said when they came out, he thought "I wanna hold your hand" was the most idiotic crap he'd ever heard, then damn if two weeks later he wasn't humming it in his head constantly.

I think it's true that when influential bands make a big splash, it changes the direction the music scene is going in, one way or the other.  With the Beatles I'd say it was more a sign of the times though, they may have slightly influenced society but society much more influenced them and the music scene at the time.

With Nirvana, that style of rock could have never been permanent, which is probably why all the pretenders imitating it to this day sound so fake on the radio.  I'd rather listen to Country or HipHop than the newer Rock stuff.

Hey, whats wrong with country or hiphop? Never listened to Johnny Cash?

And, modern rock/'indie'/guitar music isn't that bad if you know where to look. Beneath all the bands regurgitating their copies of Unknown Pleasures there is good music being made in the modern era.

It has to be said I hate Nirvana, probably due to an unhealthy reaction to my idiotic schoolfriends getting into it in that annoying way 12 year olds do. Same with Pink Floyd and The Who (although I'ved warmed to the latter), but it was all 'Kurt Cobain is, like, God' and 'It's a 'concept' album, like how cool is that'.  Roll Eyes

On the ipod, i have Steve Reich, old delta gospel music, The Beach Boys, Prince, Chet Baker, Kanye West (3 albums, god help me) Spacemen 3, NEU!, Hank Williams, and The Hold Steady. Do i listen to it all? Maybe....  Grin

All roads lead to Kokomo. Exhaustive research in time travel has conclusively proven that there is no alternate universe WITHOUT Kokomo. It would've happened regardless.

Nothing's wrong with Country or Hiphop.  That's what I was saying, I'd rather listen to that then modern Rock.  I'll resist the urge to name drop my playlist!

A waaayyyy old topic, I know, but does anyone know where this is available, as the youtube video has been taken down? I would LOVE to hear this!

Nirvana is one of my absolute favorite bands. I think part of the problem that gets in the way of people appreciating them is that the production and mixing on Nevermind made the record sound more mainstream than the actual songwriting would have. Most anyone who has heard both can attest to the more "successful" sound of In Utero do to change in producers.

My tastes are extremely eclectic, maybe somewhat from listening to later Beach Boys' albums where styles are all over the place! But my Ipod ranges from The Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, Beatles-type music to Kanye West, Lil' Wayne, Akon-isnness, to Brooks & Dunn, Marty Stuart, Jason Aldean music... and everything in between.

Much thanks. Sounds pretty good to me. Particularly compared to a lot of the mashups out there! I like how work was done to the vocal instead of simply pasting the two together.

I actually play in a death metal band and shock people on a weekly basis when they find out that the Beach Boys are my true passion haha.
I have played Farewell My Friend live between some serious heavy metal madness. Great juxtaposition and great (if not confused) response from the crowd.
