The keyboard work on Wild Honey (the song) always struck me as BB's doing a Doors sound. ... Specifically Light My Fire.  Or trying to get that sound.

And the Doors might have been a little stoned-trippy in their overall presentation but when you break it down it was r& B......and much later it actually WAS blues.    Psychadelic, as we all, know, was overused, over rated, and over blown....and never actually defined.  ....and often should have been left alone by many artists.

Think of the difference between Pink Floyd steering your trip ship vs Jack Jones covering Windmills of Your Mind.

But the thread being about genres of BB music, I would say the Beach Boys were a genre of Chuck Berry/Four Freshmen morphing into an original form of Ultimate Orchestral Sunshine Pop.  Although a little darker than PS, SMiLE follows that trend with a trippy theme.  Remember, trippy psychedelia was widespread at that point, all over the radio.    Then it became Brian chilling and checking out, alternatively until it became a band of seperate personalities much like Beatles, Byrds, CSN, and others of the time.  Then you get ES and what followed.

A Doors AND a Jack Jones reference - in the same post. Great writing, Donald. Jim and Jack, two great, great voices.

Why, thank you, Sheriff.  I wonder if Jack ever covered a Doors song.   Maybe Crystal Ship?

I think it's cool that other than me there are other people that view Love You as being punk. I always thought Let Us Go On This Way and Roller Skating Child were punk rock. And for that matter All I Wanna Do on 20/20 is pretty punk too. Any Beach Boys zealot who's into the Ramones would agree that they had a huge inlfuence on punk rock; and as far as I'm concerned punk rock saved rock n' roll from disco and c*ck rock.

Rule of thumb, think BEFORE you post. And THINK how it may affect someone else's feelings.

Check out the Beach Boys Starline website, the place for pictures of many countries Beach Boys releases on 45.

Listening to you I get the music; Gazing at you I get the heat; Following you I climb the mountain; I get excitement at your feet
Right behind you I see the millions; On you I see the glory; From you I get opinions; From you I get the story

proto-Shoegaze/proto-Twee

Luther...Luther? Oh well, I'll give it a try...

"Shoegaze" is represented by bands like Mercury Rev and My Bloody Valentine; heavy distorted guitar, but strummed fairly slowly. Slow tempos, washes of sound, psychedelic but in a fairly mellow way. I wouldn't really call any of SUNFLOWER proto-"shoegaze", but I guess "All I Wanna Do" comes close with its fuzzy, languid tone.

"Twee" is a sparse, but bright pop sound that wouldn't be out-of-place in a children's Saturday morning cereal commercial. Architecture in Helsinki, The Boy Least Likely To and dozens of other indie bands who love bouncy melodies and cheap synthesizers could classify. The lyrics are almost purposefully daft or whimsical. "At My Window" on SUNFLOWER would be a prime example of proto-"Twee", although much of Brian's work could be categorized as such.

"All I Wanna Do" was exactly the song I was thinking of when I was typing "shoegaze"!!
