What organ was used on "The Rocking Surfer" and "Wendy"? I've never been one of the types to hear a sound and immediately want to emulate it by buying the correct gear, but holy sh*t I love the sound of this thing (if it is the same instrument used on both songs).

Well now I see why Mike has to always wear a baseball cap but why does Bruce also have to?  Historical seems to actually have a nice head of hair.

Look a little closer and you'll see that it's not so nice. Once you see what I mean, you'll realize why.

Because there's an Al Jardine growing out of the back of his head?

Speaking of Al, he was sporting a partial hairpiece (in the back/top) during the reunion. It was actually well done; his hair was dyed to match the hairpiece perfectly. Shocked

Maybe it'd mean a lot more songs like "Time To Get Alone" or "Winter Symphony" -- depending on where they'd be from in Canada -- which I'd be totally OK with, haha.

Welcome!

Are you sure he wasn't talking about Surf's Up? There was/is an isolated lead vocal track for Surf's Up on Youtube, but I can't find it at the moment.

Odd choice of endless Brian pics for a song that contains one of Carl Wilson's best leads.

There's a clip on the Endless Harmony documentary where they show a concert rehearsal from I believe the 90's where Carl is the only vocalist singing his harmony in Surfer Girl along with the band.

On the subject of this clip: Who can make out who's singing the harmonies in the 1st movement? Definitely sounds like BW on the low "Are you sleeping". First time I ever heard that, pretty cool stuff.

Edit: Wow, sounds like BW sings "hey hey" towards the end. Dennis on "that's why the child". sh*t, never heard this stuff on the record. They need to release this in HQ on the box set!

Is the "That's why the child" part Dennis or Jack Rieley? We know Jack is in there somewhere.

Also, yeah, the "Hey, hey" part really does sound like Brian.

I've had this for some time. Fixing the pitch and EQ, it's easy to make it sound pretty decent.

Wanted to say that because, despite having it forever, I'm just now noticing that it really does sound like Brian doing the low "Are you sleeping?" (and, for some reason, I hadn't noticed you saying that in seltaeb's post despite quoting it. lawl.)

He was seemingly much more involved with this than we were lead to believe. We know he was reluctant but then came "bursting in" to guide the guys through the ending, but man - he has unique vocal parts not only in the ending, but there he is in the first movement, too. Nice to know that, despite it not being the ideal version, he signed off on the 1971 version quite a bit more than most folks think.

Hmm I might try that. Did you lower the bass? There is a bit of fidelity there, but..

I wonder how a recording ends up sounding like this. It's almost as if someone intentionally threw on a bass boost + cut the highs just to keep us waiting for a higher quality version. Can't imagine this went through too many generations, though I could be wrong.

I think we have speculated on this before, and it kind of ties into the Surf's Up discussion above....but why was Brian so loathe to do leads starting around the Sunflower/Surf's Up area? He was still obviously involved in many of the tracks they were cutting at the time in some way or another. Mickey Mouse syndrome? Self-confidence or drug issues?

I think it came down to his physical shape deteriorating (which was helped by the drugs, cigarettes and most likely lack of exercise - which go hand in hand) literally making it physically difficult for him to sing after he hit his mid 20's, therefore he wasn't able to put any emotion into his leads anymore, especially compared to Carl at the time - he was struggling just to hit the notes. For instance, at first glance, it's awesome to hear BW singing lead on the Breakaway demo. But when you really analyze it, you realize he's pretty much struggling through the whole thing, and Carl's vocal is clearly 100x better. Even as early as Surf's Up '67 you can hear his voice just isn't as full as it was only a year prior. The other thing at play here is that Brian was never a GREAT singer technically.. but his tone/range in the early days was just amazing. A rare, rare gift. Once he started losing that, the main features of his voice were on the way out. He beyond a shadow of a doubt realized this and instead of trying to work his way back towards what he had (which would've required some heavy lifestyle changes), he gave up (like on the "Walkin'" session, his "Surf's Up" re-record not working out, etc).

That'd be it. I love Brian's late 60s/early 70s vocals (it may be my favorite era of his voice, honestly), but by then, Carl was better suited for songs like "Surf's Up" than Brian was. I don't doubt there was emotion in his voice in his leads, but singing something like that is pretty taxing if you're out of shape (if you can do it at all). Desper posted recently that Brian was not able to hit the notes in the "Columnated ruins domino" part anymore, at least not effectively. I really hope his attempts at the lead still exist somewhere, but I doubt it.
