Brian record 2 versions in the earlt 90's. Then when he was working with Joe Thomas on IMAGINATION, Joe reported that Brian cut the song on 11 different occasions throughout the project. I think he also cut a version during GIOMH.

Didn't he also do a version during the writing sessions with Scott? I recall AGD saying that version of the best of Brian's attempts at the song.

Yeah, I'm talking about the most recent version... how does it differ from the first 643 versions?

And Andrew, a fairly detailed answer, if you please...

The leaked versions are 1.) Sweet Insanity era. 2.) Don Was / Andy Paley era. We've also heard of 3.) Imagination-era versions. I've never heard of a 4.) GIOMH version, but I have heard of the 5.) Scotty co-production.

Brian likes that song!

Is the Sweet Insanity version the same as the one that Brian played to some interviewer in his car, or is it yet another one? Not that I have heard it, I have only heard about it...

Oh, and if it isn't the same version, could you Please tell Me where I could find it?  Roll Eyes

It's the car one. I haven't heard of a better-quality version. (That being said, what you can hear of the car version does sound pretty similar to the Was version.)

Doesn't the "car" version have a Carl vocal?

I only heard one version. Would love to hear the others. "Proud Mary" is a great song, no question. I think Brian did it live one time at a private party. There was a video on youtube way back when...

I wonder if part of Brian's obsession with "Proud Mary" has to do with the fact that Phil Spector covered it, too. Huh

Good idea. At least Brian's version with Paley (as mentioned, I don't know the other versions) has definitely some similarities to Spector's recording. Listen here:

Thanks for your answer! And the two versions sound pretty similar indeed...
