"Surfside "64" was also the name of the Oz/NZ tour the BB did that year, 2nd on the bill to Roy Orbison. The others on the tour were The Surfaris, Paul & Paula and The Joy Boys.

What’d I Say” first appeared on a 1964 Australian various artists album titled Surfside ’64
I cannot remember where I found that out but I think it was either an old Record Collector or an old Goldmine.

I highly doubt that such an album exists. Firstly the Surfside 64 tour program is one of the most collectable pieces Australian rock'n'roll memorabillia - had there been a compilation LP to match it, it too would be as sort after and valued ... unless they were avaialble in mass supply ... which they aren't beause I for one have never seen one and I frequent the limited number of second hand stores in Sydney. Secondly there was zero marketing savvy in Australia in the 60s and the mere concept of a promotional or tour LP would have been beyond the marketing comprehension of the industry, especially if good old 2SM was involved (it took upstart radio station 2JJ to bring this kind of marketing concept to Australia in the 70s). Thirdly, Messers Baker and McParland know better than anybody in Australia what was and wasn't released and had What'd I Say seen any form of previous official release they would not have had to lie to Cap/EMI about the "Portugese B Side".

The existance of such an LP just doesn't add up. Still, as usual, I could be wrong so I'll go to the oracle of all things surf music related in Oz and ask him ...

Somebody misinterpreting the title of the broadcast tape of the concert? Perhaps it was pressed as a transcription LP for radio use only, and this was again misinterpreted by somebody as being a limited commercial release?

Just two wild guesses - nothing concrete.

MBE:
I looked it up again and couldn't find the info. Sorry for any confusion but if I find where I read it again I will post it.

Andrew G. Doe:
I've never seen any mention of it in all my years of BB collecting, nor has anyone I've spoken to, and that includes Stephen McParland.  :)
