Okay so my son asked this question on a youtube video and kinda got an inbetween answer...so I thought he'd ask this for him:

Can we know for sure if Brian his doing all of the BVs on this song? What do you guys think? Personally, listening to the harmony stacks on the second verse...the highest and the middle sound a helluva lot like Brian...which is funny because on the tag the "no" response to my ears...listening to the Stack O'Vocals mix...sounds very close to Dennis...although Stebbins will probably debunk me on this theory.

So whadya guys think?

I've always thought Dennis was on the BV as well

To me, it sounds like all Brian except the low parts (the "duh, duh, duh" in the second verse and outro), which sounds like Mike.

The "duh duh duh" part sounds like something that Mike would usually sing, but I'm not convinced it's him. But I don't know how a young Brian (or Dennis) singing that low would sound...

Oh I have no doubt that Brian or Dennis could have sang the part...Brian could do a killer bass part back then, just as well as Mike, and so could Dennis ("Wouldn't It Be Nice"), but it still sounds like Mike to me.

Plus I remember reading something (no idea what) where Mike said that he sang that part, specifically referencing the 50's doo-wop feel he put into it.

Why on earth would Stebbins debunk Dennis singing on anything?Huh?

Btw, he is completely right about Dennis' voice being pretty much third in line on their early recordings (and lots of later stuff)... I just got done listening to Little Deuce Coop and All Summer Long, and he's right. On just about every song, you have a Mike or Brian lead or co-lead, and then Dennis on pretty much "featured backing vocal" then you have Carl & Al pretty much blending together in the backgound, (though sometimes on back-ups Carl and Dennis can almost sound the same)..... it sounds great. Dennis rules!!!!!

I can remember him saying he's only on a handful of PS cuts. But yes he is about third in line on a lot of the early and later stuff...and yes he does rule. Completely. Grin

For me, the bass vox have always given it away as a Brian only song. Definately a guy singing out of his normal range, only Mike sounded that funny normally.

That's weird!  I was just thinking about who's singing what on this very song yesterday!!!!!  Freaky!!

I was trying to figure out if it was Brian or Al (??) doing the tag "You didn't think..."  It has that "Help Me, Rhonda" Al Jardine bite to it.  But I was thinking...no wait...Brian could also have a mid-range angst in his voice similar to Al -- especially during these years.

As well, I have also been noticing recently how often Dennis appears in the vocal blend.  His voice is easy to pick out, yet blended perfectly --- and it added a sense of humanity to the mix.  That was such a magical blend of voices.  The foundation was in the middle -- Carl and Al.  That gave it a thickness, a landscape and a certain tightness -- like the blue angels.  Mike's bass added an extremely musical and melodic weight.  Brian's piercing high-end was the brilliant sparkle -- and Dennis' added a certain pain, longing and dissonance.  No other group had all those elements.  Even if another group was able perfect a difficult chord or harmony (which few ever did) -- it still leaves me longing for the range of emotion and complexity them Boys had.
