So I am just trying to figure out how many different versions of this song there are. So far, I can think of 4:
-The Smile version
-The Smiley Smile version
-The Laughing Gravy version
-The Jan & Dean 70's version
Is this the case?

Technically speaking, there were 2 Smile versions...the "cornucopia" version (which almost sounds like a demo) that was done in late '66 I believe, then the version we all know from the box set that was done in April '67.
Other than that, your list looks good to me!

They started recording the vocals before the track?

The initial track was just Brian's piano, so they were singing to that.

Yep. And I think the Gold Star track is pretty obvious on the 1993 "Good Vibrations" box set mix. Great job on that by Mark Linett, BTW.

And, of course, there's the 1968 TV appearance on The Mike Douglas Show, when they performed an audience participating, hand clapping version of "Vegetables".
I always thought it was an unusual, but ambitious choice. They were two albums and a couple of singles removed from Smiley Smile/"Vegetables" by then, but it was an excellent performance nevertheless.

Unfortunately, no YouTube. I have it on an old Maxell audio cassette somewhere....
EDIT: I apologize, it was David Frost, not Mike Douglas. Sorry...

If it was David Frost, then it was 1971, with the acoustic "Lady" and "Forever", right?

On the Vegatables demo, can anyone figure out the backgroung vox after Brian sings, "I'm gonna cornucopia, strip the stalk green and I hope ya like me most of all, my favorite Vegetable..."?

I wrote to the David Frost show owners and they tell me that that show is no more-destroyed to save space years ago. It exists on audio-some fan taped it (it appeared on some boots), but the video seems to be lost forever

I've never been able to totally decipher it...at the end it sounds like they sing something like "made my body shook" but I really don't know.

To me it always sounded like "tripped on a cornucopia, squished the stalk green...".

Yes, a clever little reference to smoking weed, which I is why I think this is the right lyric. He "tripped" on an endless supply of weed, stripping the stalks of their bud to smoke.
