Neil Young and Dennis
«

I was listening to Neil's Archives and was struck at how similar "A Man Needs a Maid" sounds to Dennis's stuff - starts with just voice and piano, then all the lush strings/orchestration comes in, like Cuddle Up or his solo stuff. Was there ever a connection between these two? Coincidence, or did they influence each other?

They both played in bands in the '60s. Is that close enough to warrant further investigation?

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Blimey! Now there's a thought... suppose Manson
really
was inspirational... and is still hiding a treasure trove of classic songs in his cell...

I'm sure I read somewhere that Neil Young was going to be signed to Brother but declined.

Neil Young talked about Dennis in the authorized biography "Shakey"...He became friends with him on the Nov 67 Thanksgiving tour (Buffalo Springfield was on the bill)...They also toured together in 1968. He and Dennis shared an unfortunate acquaintance-named Charlie. They became pretty good pals for awhile apparently. Neil had a lot of respect for Brian as well-he talks about his love of "Day in the Life of a Tree" in the book.

Any connection thread between Dennis and Neil Young has to mention John Hanlon, who recorded parts of POB and Bambu, mixed and co-produced last year's Sony Legacy release...and has recorded, mixed and/or produced something like 17 Neil Young records.
