This seems like an important moment in the history of the BBs.  If the Beatles hadn't hit big in America, I am not sure we would have Pet Sounds (for instance).  I have read a couple things in the usual books, but still don't have a good grasp on when and where Brian first heard the Beatles, and what his reaction was (other than the fact that there was a new competitor for the top most of pop most).

Anyone have any insight?  Did Brian watch the Beatles' Ed Sullivan shows, for instance?  Or were the BBs in a state of denial early on?

Brian was knocked out by the Beatles. It was actually a point of contention for Murry at the time, since he believed the band should never listen to the "competition" despite Carl being a diehard fan and owning posters and such.

Phil Spector was Brian's Beatles. The Coasters and the Everly Bros. were Mike's Beatles. The Kingston Trio were Al's Beatles. The Beatles were Carl, Dennis and David's Beatles.

Its a generational thing. Brian saw the Beatles as his competition. Carl saw them as his favorite band.

A slightly OT thing, I was reading this article about Harry Nilsson, and it has an interview with Van Dyke where he says that he 'couldn't understand his philandering with the beatles, because they were the enemy to me and brian wilson. They were the competition'.

I guess the fact that albums like Rubber Soul were taken seriously when The Beach Boys were seen as surfing music, despite the epicness of Today/Summer days must have stung. Stebbins nailed it, though

Brian definitely realized that he had to up his game once the Beatles arrived.  I read somewhere that he wanted to scrap the just-finished Shut Down Volume 2 album and start from scratch to make it stronger.  He saw it as a challenge, and until the collapse of Smile, he held his own quite well.

Well I can remember Brian saying more than a few times that he and Mike watched "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and Brian was very struck by their energy.

I like the Beatles a bit more than the Boys of Beach, I think Brian's band is the tops---really amazing. And finally, I'm liberal. That's it.
