As bad as this is, at least it sounds like Brian was genuinely enjoying himself (whatever was left of himself at that point, that is).

that never, ever fails to make me cry/laugh/have an out-of-body experience. It's probably the worst rap song i've ever heard, bar none.  Angry  Shocked Cry

I have nothing against Smart Girls. For that matter, neither it, Wipeout nor Speed Turtle would rank among my bottom 25 in BW-written or -performed songs.

I like the original version of the song without the samples. Of course, whoever wrote the lyrics is a fucking genius.

To say it sucks is an insult to sucky things. Brian did it because the 1990 version of "mywifeandmanagers" told him to... and he sounds like that because he's pumped full of speed. The concept and implementation are abhorrent to me.

That said, the first few lines are pretty fun.

He sounds so off or messed up it's really sad. Some say the cocaine tapes are too raw but Brian (to me) sounded pretty creative overall singing with some emotion. The Landy era Brian..l by 1990 he was cutting VERY bad material and he seemed like he was incuring some serious damage.

Landy was giving him speed? I know that Gary Usher said that Brian was receiving shots of something call "suppliment a". I am guessing that was it. Why would Landy do this. Was he trying to kill Brian?

This is a gross oversimplification, but essentially Landy, 2nd time around, kept Brian docile with thorazine then topped him up with speed when he was required to 'perform', be it live, in the studio or for interviews. I've been told this by enough folk to accept it's true.

And whatever the intent, yes, it did damn nearly kill him.

Landy makes me sick Computer Smash! I don't know if he was trying to kill him, I just think he was trying to show "hey look everyone Brian is back and happy again". But yes whatever the intent I still hate Landy. Angry

I always thought, and these are just my thoughts, that Landy doped Brian up so much from about 1985 onward so that Brian didn't criticize him too much, and also sped him up in public to make him look 'recovered'; both because he was afraid of losing his paycheck and/or his license to practice (which he of course eventually did), because after all his healing of Brian starting in 1982 was only supposed to last a short while, and it was nine bloody years until Brian was eventually set free.

I like the Beatles a bit more than the Boys of Beach, I think Brian's band is the tops---really amazing. And finally, I'm liberal. That's it.

I see that the YouTube video has now been removed "due to a copyright claim by Brother Records Inc".  Does BRI have the rights to "Smart Girls" and BW's work from that era?  This is just a simple, honest question.  I'm an innocent and sensitive soul and this is one of my first posts here so don't shoot me down!!

I give kudos to Brian for trying something remarkably different and also something clearly meant as humorous...but it just doesnt work for me. Im glad it's out there, as it is kind of interesting, but in the end I would put it in the 'interesting experiment that didn't really work' box.

As off-the-wall silly songs go, the aforementioned Speed Turtle works much better for me. Did he write that? It sounds like Baker Man and seems almost deliberately to be sending up the old Wilson/Christian songs.

They're brians songs, so i wouldn't see why not. Any business deal Landy had regarding them has been long voided.

Oh, and welcome aboard!  Smiley

As I recall, the original copyright to this stuff was Beach Bum/Beachead... but given the settlement to get Landy's name off the credits, it's possible they've reverted to BRI.

Hi Joy - see you at Guilfest ?

Like I've been saying for years - all the major BB/BW MBs are monitored on a daily basis by interested parties. Long suspected it, and had it confirmed some time ago.

Aye, I remember you mentioning.  S'fun tho' isn't it -  I mean, who's "listening in", and what are they hoping we'll post? Having Smart Girls taken off YouTube seems a bit trivial when it's common knowledge that there're at least three versions of the entire Sweet Insanity album out there, pressed on silver disc.

The Official Lurkers must be hoping for bigger and better booty than that.  Maybe they expect Brad Elliot to come on here and brag about his Dumb Angel test mix reel...

Ahhh! Head Spin Happy Dance

Come to think of it, Andrew, ever thought about uploading your Remember the Zoo acetates on YouTube?
