Seattle 1970: David Marks mentioned in "Barbara Ann"?

Having just finished The Lost Beach Boy and began listening to the muddy recording of the Seattle concert featuring Brian from 1970, it was a more than a bit creepy to hear Bruce (?) sing "tried David Marks but I knew he wouldn't do" at circa 2:20. Or is it just me who hears this?

I don't think I've heard the recording in question, but around that time they sometimes said "tried Al Jardine but I knew he wouldn't do", so for them to say Dave's name instead of Al's isn't that big of a stretch.

Yes, but Al was in the group at the time, whereas David had left seven years earlier and had not even met Bruce then (right?), which is what I reacted on. (That, and the fact that I heard this when I just had put down The Lost Beach Boy of course.) Interesting, nontheless.

Are you sure it's Bruce singing? I thought Al usually sang lead on Barbara Ann around that time.

Have you ever listened to the session tapes for the Party album (which Bruce is on)? There's this one moment where they're all joking like "Hey, where's Dave? Where's Jan and Dean, and Jan and Arnie, and Bruce and Terry, and Bruce and Jerry?" or something like that. I wish I knew what track it was because that's definitely not word for word. But anyway, I think they all knew about their collective roles as members of the same scene even if they never met each other. Bruce was probably given a Beach Boys history lesson when he joined the group, and besides, he was a fan of the group years before he joined.

Sure sounds like it's Bruce cutting in on the David Marks part. I guess Al sings the lead, though, but it's hard to hear what with the bad quality and all.

Bruce was probably given a Beach Boys history lesson when he joined the group, and besides, he was a fan of the group years before he joined.

True. I should check out the Party sessions I guess, but that's what? 4 CDs? That will take a while...

Or, you can wait for me to post my transcript of the Party! sessions at www.beachboysarchives.com.  That should be around the end of the month, if all goes well.  I actually just listened to the part in question a few days ago.  Mike sings something like, "On behalf of me, and Denny, and Brian, and Al, and Carl, and Bruce, and Glen, and Dave...".  They kid around for awhile along those lines, and I think Bruce says he saw Dave out in the hall.  It's either Disc One or Two, if you care to listen.  Definitely NOT Discs 3 or 4, 'cause I haven't gotten to them yet.

Al sang the high part, but the verses were usually all four "front-guys".

Brian probably helped sing the high part that day but I doubt it was him who said it.
