Denny's Holy Man Synth
«

Hey guys
I just love the synth sound on Holy Man and was hoping to get some detail on it so I can try and reproduce it...I'm guessing he would have used a vintage moog synth? So how would one program oscillators etc to get that sound? I'm talking what wave shape, any filters LFOs etc and stuff like that.
Any help/info will be gladly received
Thanks
Sam

I dont think anyone here can give you any specific parameters, your best bet is to sit down on the moog and just play with it til you get a similar sound/something you like.

If you actually have a real Moog, the joy of owning one should get you over not figuring out the sound.
I fooled around with my MicroKorg to try to get a similar sound, it's a pretty straightforward sound. Just a square wave, some high-end rolled off, plenty of portamento. Seems pretty mono, no ring modulation or anything.
But those synth patches tend to sound way different soloed. I've heard a mix of Disney Girls with the count in left on the front end, and there's a pick-up synth note that they edited out, and it's way, way buzzier than you'd think.

Hey aeijtzsche thats interesting thanks.
Unfortunately I am not able to get my hands on a real moog at this time so I will be using the "softsynths" found in Reason and Logic hehe....still good fun though

Reason is a bit limited as far as retro synth sounds. I use Reaktor as well but the best 'synthulators', in my opinion, come from Arturia.

Check out the sound samples.
The MiniMoog V and Moog Modular V are great but the ARP 2600V really floats my boat.

PS - Supposedly, Dennis is playing the following on HM:
Moog bass: Dennis Wilson
Mini-Moog synthesizer: Dennis Wilson
ARP synthesizer: Dennis Wilson
ARP String Ensemble: Dennis Wilson (sped-up then slowed-down)
I believe emulations for all these are available from Arturia.
