Can anyone confirm what my ears are telling me? Is that Mike Love on Bruce & Terry's cover of "Custom Machine," singing the line "Step on the gas, she goes ..."? It sure sounds like it to me, but I can't find confirmation anywhere. This link at Barnes & Noble.com plays a 30-second sample of the song that includes the line in question: http://music.barnesandnoble.com/search/mediaplayer.asp?ean=090771105226&disc=1&track=6

That doesn't sound that much like him. Compare it to the Beach Boys version, doesn't sound that similar.

Probably not; according to the session sheet (November 4, 1963; session no. 94002) the following musicians participated: Bruce: vocal, piano, session leader Terry: vocal Tommy Tedesco: guitar Bill Pitman: guitar Ray Pohlman: bass Hal Blaine: drums
Little Deuce Coupe, Shut Down and 409 were cut a the same session, so it was a kind of a Beach Boys session as far as the songs were concerned.

Not Mike... however he is on Bruce & Terry's "Don't Run Away" (which he also co-wrote with Bruce).

Is this an AFM session sheet? . . . If so, it would have been a tracking session (instrumental) . . . Vocal sessions were done separtately through AFTRA . . . not AFM. Though I suppose there could be exceptions. M.

You're right, AFM sheet. Never seen any of those vocal sheets. What do they look like?

I wasnt actually thinking about what year it was recorded....If you look at all the B+T projects..Rip chords..etc..solo stuff..Dont Run Away stands out..I may like Hey Little Cobra..3 window Coupe..Summer Means Fun...DRA... Is different than the hits + lame lp BB covers etc...DRA Sounds Fress + original + maybe a little Pet Sounds influenced..Thats all..

It sure does sound like Mike when they say "step on the gas"
I'd be pretty stunned if it turned out to NOT be Mike. Because I am about 99% certain it is.

Best I recall, Terry produced most of the B&T/Rip Chords/Rogues sessions on his own, the rest were co-productions with Bruce.
BTW, "step on the gas, she goes" is so obviously Bruce that i can't believe anyone could think it isn't. OK, maybe Beethoven...

Yeah, he sings the bass part on Hey Little Cobra but it's very boyish.
