I don't recall hearing how long Brian's contract with Capitol runs, and some quick (admittedly half-assed) searching yielded no results. Anyone know whether this is a one-off? I can't imagine they'd agree to too big a multi-album deal (say, more than 2 albums total) unless they could include some sort of live or comp stuff, since I don't think anyone would feel comfortable predicting how much more new material Brian will be willing or able to create. Anyone?

I've heard nothing, Luther. I would assume it's a one-off, knowing nothing else.

I would hope Brian and the powers that be, would have enough sense to know what happens to Brian when the "company" put the pressure on him years ago to pop out records like the goose laying the perverbial golden egg. I don't understand why he needed to go back to Capitol in the first place. He was doing fine without them. Please don't tell me it was Brian's idea to come up with the TLOS 3 variants to work over his fans.

Maybe it was the only offer on the table.

As for doing"fine" without them... two of his last three studio albums spent a combined total of 2 weeks in the top 200 and excepting BWPS (which I think we all agree is a special case) none of his solo albums have cracked the US Top 50

I'm glad capitol in this country is putting their money where their mouths are. But =, honestly, I think Brian would have been better off signing with Starbucks.

Good idea to go with Captiol, as maybe Brian being on that label serves the same purpose as releasing SMiLE did (closure, cleansing of the soul, ect.)

Maybe we all bought Brian's albums because we know Brian and his music, not because of the way it was marketed Andrew. Just my opinion as I know nothing about marketing music (obviously), but I feel like it was rather forced down my throat, in a matter of speaking. Especially the way they handled the bonus tracks. The pre-ordering thing by Control Industry, apparently a Capitol, Brian, and whoever fiasco, turned out really bad. I got brought to task on the blue/snowboard for complaining about them. I canceled my order from them and went to Best Buy and iTunes.

To me, Capitol is the evil giant and we'll just have to wait and see how it plays out. I think Brian's music sells to a select group and that's the way of the world. I guess we're either for him or not and no amount of marketing is going to pull people in to his music after all of these years.

Just speakin' my mind.

The fans who actually bought TLOS would have been better off if the album had been released on Starbucks.

Any bonus tracks would probably have been included (Ltd Edn 2nd disc perhaps?) and not spread over 3 full-price editions.

The way it is. Period.

Why do we complain? I don't have a single doubt in my mind that 99.9% of the members of this board used to drop $$ at the record store on every Tuesday back in the old days. You know...back when they actually made "that type" of music?

So, here one comes along (in a year that has been strangely rich in great releases I believe---including POB), and we gripe.

I am thankful that we get it at all. Like a blast from the past, That Lucky Old Sun is. Yet, it is also Back To The Future.

Enjoy it while you can.

I think everyone here was/is happy to pay for the album. I thought the discussion here was more whether they thought Capitol was the best label for it.

Okay.....going with your flow.

Why not Capitol? Makes sense to me. The promotion has been great. At least in my mind, it seems like they need him just as much as he needs them.

Dire straits in the biz these days. Makes perfect sense to hang with the horse that brung you -- especially when it seems all is for naught these days.

I think Capitol will give it their all for this release. If it doesn't pay off, they are likely to shoot for another target.

Desperate times in the biz.

I thought Capitol was a good idea, frankly. (I started the thread just curious how long a deal it was: one- or multi-album deal.) It has its faults, but it's also a major promotion machine in theory at least, and my impression of the U.S. promotion is that it has been at least OK.

From what I can tell, Capitol have done a fair bit to promote TLOS in the USA...but I have seen nothing in the UK.

My thoughts are, either Capitol thought the UK was a sewn-up market as far as BW is concerned and that they did not need to do anything....or that they can't be arsed with the UK.

Mistake either way. Brian is still quite mainstream here, and I believe he could still score a major hit album or single. ..but people need to know the product is out there. I can't even find it on the shelves where I live, and it's not often even been in amazon.co.uk's top 100....
