From Domenic Priore's Smile book: "I think Look had vocals intended for it, by the way Brian reacted to it and the way he came up with the melody; working on that song was something like the experience I had with Do You Like Worms. When I was able to listen to multitracks of the song, there was bleed through on the tape. That's where I got that clarinet line from, and Brian was quick to sing the melody, based on that clarinet line."

Presuming that Darian isn't making this up (which I don't believe as that clarinet line, apart from the Worms verse melody, is the most vintage sounding 'new' addition to BWPS), where did he hear this recording of Look, with the clarinet line bleed through? It's certainly not been bootlegged so is it in the vaults? I remember Aeiztsche, who has access to the BB vaults, saying that the only unbooted Smile recordings in the vaults were Jazz, maybe something else, but he didn't mention anything about a version of Look with an audible clarinet line melody. Did Darian have access to super rare Smile stuff that only collectors have? I'd be fascinated to know where this version of Look exists - Does anyone have any ideas, thoughts, suspicions about this?

My suspicions: There exists super rare SMiLE! related material that has gone unbooted. Everything that has been booted is somewhere else in much better quality. Brian Wilson had more worked out on SMiLE! in his head up to the release of BWPS than he has ever let on.

I share this daydream! Of all potential unbooted Smile material, I think the fabled six minute Heroes and Villains would be the mind blower for me - didn't Mike have a version of this that he played a reporter in 67 or so? Still, I think it's unlikely that a long H&V will ever surface, but with the version of Look I described abvove, at least a reliable source, i.e. Darian Sahanaja, is claiming to have recently heard it. It may not be the most exciting of unheard Smile stuff, but I for one would love it if a version of Look with a bleed of a melody line were booted.

If Darian had the sessions for "Look" on his laptop, he'd be able to solo individual tracks and listen on headphones, and thus hear faint traces of stuff that had been recorded on adjacent tracks that you would not hear in a finished mix, because they'd be too quiet.

Thanks - that makes sense now. Makes you wish that someone would release (or boot!) a mix of Look where the clarinet melody is audible.

My theory is similar to adamghost. I assumed that Darian listened to his SMiLE bootlegs on sophisticated, state-of-the-art studio equipment, which could disect a piece of music in a way the average listener could not.

It would be interesting if Darian did have access to SMiLE material that the bootleggers didn't get their hands on, but, if he did, again, it's frustrating that he/they would continue to be tight-lipped about it and not discuss it - in depth - in an interview.

No mystery at all - Darian plainly states he listened to the multitracks and to do that he'd have to be in a studio, and thus have the ability to isolate each track.

BTW, in his statement as presented below, it's possible he's referring to "Do You Like Worms", not "Look".

Right, it's just a matter of soloing discrete tracks on the existing master multitrack.

AGD - are you referring to the statement that I posted earlier from Priore's book? It seems pretty clear to me that Darian is talking about the 'new' clarinet melody in Look, not Worms, surely? He says that he got the clarinet line from bleed through on the multi-tracks. I think it's unlikely that he's suggesting that the 'new' verse melody in Worms was first discovered as a clarinet bleed through on the Worms multi-track.

You know, If you lined up EVERY SINGLE PERSON Brian ever knew from the years 1966-1967, I bet we'd discover at least one or two tapes that nobody has ever heard. I'm reminded of a Beatles story. In 1994, George Martin(The Beatles' producer) found an acetate of an alternate take of "Please Please Me"...IN HIS CLOSET! That is probably the most annoying thing about "lost tapes". There are probably tapes right under people's noses that are gathering dust, forgotten over the course of 40+ years.

Classic example would be the Morgan sessions - rediscovered in Bruce Morgan's wardrobe in the late 80s and containing "Lavender", which no-one even knew about before then.

The acetate found(by George Martin's wife) was the acetate for the EMi audition version of "Love Me Do"(with Pete Best on drums). The "Please Please Me" acetate(with session drummer Andy White) was purchased at an auction.

..this is in the same vein as the thread re Big Bag of Vegetables and the SMiLE Sessions multiple cd boot boxes (very difficult to obtain).

A source told me that about 40 to 50 percent of BBOV hasn't been booted until recently.  Perhaps the things being discussed here are in that body of audio...
