Three Dog Night ...

Just spent the first time in my entire life listening to some Three Dog Night ! They had virtually no success at all over here in the UK (only one Top 20 hit - and that must've escaped me ...) so I kinda figured it was about time I gave them a listen - especially with the 66/67 'Redwood/BW' connection - and I must say that some of it was pretty damn fine ("Liar" "Eli's Coming"). Some of the tunes were hits over here for other artists so a number were familiar to me but my question to you guys across the sea is ... how are they viewed these days by the American public ? Still credible ? A forgotten joke ? Or just a nostalgia act as has sadly befallen so many successful bands from days of olde (I'm sadly thinking The Association and the current touring BB line-up here ...)

They are still performing but many feel they aren't the same group without Chuck Negron who was fired from the band for heroin addiction.  Original member Corey Wells sings Negron's leads now and does a fair job.  Brian's buddy Danny Hutton is still with the band as is the original keyboard player.

Personally, I think Three Dog Night is terrible. The only saving grace is that it's funny to listen to Danny Hutton's stories (and stories about him), as there is a wicked amusement to be had from the drug casualties of the 70s.

Artists with lesser catalogues than this are in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. There are a couple of album cuts that aren't on this list that are high quality.

Three Dog Night were the perfect late 60's/early 70's AM radio band. Catchy melodies, quirky lyrics with an edge, and a lot of fun. Now their stuff is mostly relegated to good-time oldies radio stations. Obviously, they had some talented singers. I thought Chuck Negron had cleaned up; I'm not sure why he's not with the band.

I like Mama Told Me Not to Come and Joy to the World. Those are the only two Three Dog Night songs I've heard.

Chuck did clean up and put out his autobiography "Three Dog Nightmare" which I haven't read.

Back when they were having hits, I sure enjoyed hearing them on the radio but never enough to buy anything. Didn't know they still have a performing presence and don't hear them on the radio in the market I live in.

My dad was a huge 3 Dog Night fan when he was a kid, or so he tells me. Said he saw them live in the 70s. He had 2 of their studio albums and a 3 disc live album on vinyl that have passed down into my collection (the vast majority of my vinyl originally belonged to my parents-I've augmented it with a few BB albums). "My Old Kentucky Home" from the album Seven Separate Fools is a great song. I think Randy Newman wrote it. Train's "She's On Fire" very obviously ripped off music from that song.
