Alternate version of Mrs. O'Leary's Cow?
«

I have an untitled 30 sec fragment on one of my SMiLE mixes, which to me, sounds like a slightly drugged out version of mrs. o'leary's cow. (NOT Fire). Does anyone know if this is an actual early version of the song, or simply a knock off by another act? Thanks in advance.

This is probably not a great question, but it's not one of those stereo mixes of "fall breaks" is it? There's no early version of Fire, not quite sure what you mean by "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow (Not Fire)" as they're one and the same thing...

I'm refering to "Heroes and Villains (intro)" from the good vibrations box set.

So you're talking about an alternate version of Bag of Tricks, or you're talking about the Fire track not including bag of tricks? Still confused.

i apologize for confusing everyone (including myself at this point). i think i've also heard this piece of music titled as "heroes and villains 'gong' intro".
as far as "bag of tricks", i'm familiar with the title, but i don't believe i've actually ever heard it.

I think you are getting confused with the title (and I don't blame ya). Cause the "Heroes And Villains (Intro)" on the GV box set
IS
The intro to Fire/Mrs. O'Leary's Cow (call it what you will) and NOT anything to do with H&V.

Well, who knows what had to do with what back when it was originally composed.

The Intro to Heroes (gong version) is slower than the March version later put on the beginning of Fire/Mrs. O'Leary's Cow, and the gong throughout is prominent. Bag of Tricks has a piano ascending/descending run identical to the organ in Fall Breaks, with bells and whistles similar to the March Intro. Bag of Tricks was on Secret Smile I believe? Bag of Tricks was on the January 67 Heroes comp tape. The gong intro is on an 8 track tape of Smile sessions compiled by Desper and Carl in 1972 and the tape is still in the Beach Boys archive.

Interesting to note that if one follows "Wind Chimes" with the gong H&V (intro) it works pretty well...from chimes to gong.
On the other hand "Heroes And Villains (intro)" does kinda sound like a fire station gone wild as an intro to "Fire."
There's a different "H&V (intro)" that sounds really weird like a little toy sound or something like that. Maybe that one's a toy fire truck. Any guesses?
