Naivete at its finest, but the group would only get better from here.

...Where it all begins.
Raw, and very young.
Wouldn't it been great to be around at the time?
Yeah!!

If you like hearing sessions and want to know more about the very early years, this is the album for you. I do like stuff on it like Lavender, Barbie and What is a Young Girl Made Of. The best for me on it is Surfin' and Luau back to back. Best versions of those songs! They sound so young. A nice time to visit always.
4 stars.

This is a decent enough release. I thought it was interesting reading in the liner notes Dorinda Morgan's perspective on those times aswell. I actually like the early takes of Luau better than the master take, although it sounds more rushed and more rough around the edges, its just more fun to listen to. It's also fun to listen to the earlier takes of Surfin' aswell. But the highlight for me is Barbie and What Is A Young Girl Made of... okay not the greatest songs ever but nice enough and they showcase Brian's voice from early on (though I think it was actually recorded after Surfin' Safari maby? Not 100% sure but I think Ive read that somewhere, but this show's Brian as a lead vocalist nonetheless very early on. Lavender is pretty boring as a song but it still shows the amazing vocal abilities of the boys(especially considering how nervous the boys would have been). And Judy is pretty average but still it was one of Brians earlier compositions so I can't really criticise him. I think a previous user summed it up nicely in "They sound so young. A nice time to visit always." and I just enjoy listening to it (not too often mind you) because they sound so innocent etc.. I mean who would have guessed at this stage that these 5 boys would make such an impact on music and go through everything that they went through etc...?

Great to have a definitive version of this material to kill all the third-party releases (which generally add content NOT by the Beach Boys - a local book store here is selling "The Best of the Beach Boys", which consists of the better takes from this batch, and faceless cover versions of more BB's songs).

Orginal recordings were all within '61-'62 in a year and a half span. I have always liked the raw sound!

To further enhance my statement about how it's great to have a TRUE release of these....
After seeing copies of it for years, I finally just caved and bought that Wand Records LP "The Beach Boys' Greatest Hits 1961-1963." (You know the one, ugly yellow cover with black silhouettes of the Boys.) Hearing murky mono Beach Boys outtakes mixed with terrible Herb Alpert-esque instrumental covers of their REAL hits from that time period is quite an unsettling experience.

Great youthful fun! I don't play this cd too often but I do enjoy the tunes, except for Barbie. Great if you like vintage garage rock type stuff!

3/5 simply because it has some great early songs, and possibly the best version of
Surfer Girl
. I really enjoy the boys voices on this album full of early material, but
Surfer Girl
is spine-tingling in it's simplicity and beauty.

The biggest plus for this particular album is, is that up to this point, all preceding releases of this material sounded terrible. I believe this was the first issuance where the actual tapes were used, provided by Bruce Morgan. Steve Hoffman did the mastering on it.

I love Karate/Beach Boys Stomp. It's simple but pure fun. Carl is the sole credit on it, even though he claimed that Long Promised Road was the first song he ever wrote.

He had some other songwriting credits before LPR, too - mostly co-writes with Brian, or instrumentals.

It's surprising how good this album is. The instrumentation is pretty basic, but even then, those Boys could sing! They sure sing sweetly on Lavender, and I love the middle part on Luau that Brian sings; Karate is a pretty exciting instrumental. Carl already had his guitar chops down, and he was what, 15?
