Carnie has 3 things working against her: heredity, her past history of eating to hide the pain, and an addictive personality.

I suppose if the stomach can grow in size to accomodate a heavy eater, the small pocket of it left after the bypass can do the same thing. I've heard that this is very dangerous: the original scar tissue left by the stapling can rupture, resulting in a perforated stomach. The post-op followup is very strict, and must be adhered to for life: eat very small amounts until your hunger is satisfied, and no more.

I've been suspicious of this procedure for a long time. Doing this to your stomach is like cutting off your right hand for stealing. The left hand will eventually learn how. There are deeply embedded emotional and mental pathways that will lead one back to the same behavior eventually unless those are also addressed.

I once worked with a lady who had gastric bypass surgery. She was 45 years old, she was overweight, but I wouldn't call her obese. She said that she got the surgery because of a heart condition, was forced to lose weight, and couldn't do it by dieting. She was taking medication for the heart condition.

A short while after meeting/working with the lady, I saw her obituary in the newspaper. I made a couple phone calls, and found out that a staple tore loose (I don't know the medical term), and she died shortly thereafter, never knowing what happened. Very sad.
