Surf's Up (alt version)

i've come across something called Surf's Up (Alt Version), apparently recorded in 1972.  it's got a carl lead vocal throughout, a different piano take, some extra overdubs (possibly strings - the version i've got has particularly clanky sound quality - certainly another trumpet, some sax and what sounds like tack piano) and a faster part three with fewer vocals but drums and a dodgy sax.

and here's the thing: why would the BBs re-record Surf's Up, especially after the released version had gone out?  is it a live version with no audience?

That tape's been going the rounds for a couple of decades - it's the storied BBs performance from the Grand Gala du Disque in 1972. The lack of audience noise has caused a lot of folk to think it's an alternate studio take.

I wonder if one of them's Brad Elliott, who wrote in his book that the Boys recorded an alternate studio version of the song in Holland in '72.
