It's a spontaneous love message from Brian to Marilyn IMHO, who was there when Brian recorded his lead vocals early in the morning.

In the podcast, Brian says something like, "I just said 'I love you' toward the end of the song."

I think he means that it was his _idea_ to say it-- not that he was the one who said it in the recording. Either that or he can't remember who said it.

It's Carl's voice, Brian's concept, Marilyn's inspiration.

I always thought it was Carl too, but if you listen to the sessions, the "I Love You" line wasn't recorded until Brian's lead vocal.  It seems unlikely that Carl would step in just for that line, so it probably is Brian.  Not the first time their voices have been confused, and definitely not the last.

It's Carl. No question in my mind at all.

Unless it's Alan, of course...

I think it's Carl.  So in my dissertation on the album, I wrote "The final spoken 'I Love You' is thought to be Carl".  I also think it could've been done at a later time as a "drop-in" on the lead vocal track.

BTW, instead of calling my research "extensive", at the moment I think I would call it "exhaustive"...simply 'cause it wore me out!  At the moment I'm very tired, and just thinking of all that work makes me even MORE tired!   Azn

Although Brian has no qualms about lying, and often can't remember, I think like somebody said above..... if this is Carl saying it on the tape, Brian could simply have been referring to how he directed that part.

As in "I just played a little violin part at the end" doesn't mean Brian actually played it, he just meant he put that there.  "I just said I Love You at the end" could mean the same thing.

I agree that it sounds very much like Carl. But the reason why I still think it's Brian is because he said that while recording the first lead vocal track. I can't imagine Carl being there at 5 o'clock in the morning just to say 'I love you'. And the reason why this part wasn't added later on this 1st lead vocal track is simply because Brian added the 2nd lead vocal while mixing the song to mono. And that's why the 2nd lead is missing on the stereo version.

How do you know that it was was recorded at the same time as the first lead vocal track?  It could have easily been "dropped in" to that same track at a later time.

Listen to the sessions on SOT. It's not there during the background vocals session and not during the Mike lead vocal session. But when Brian recorded his 1st lead, it's there on the same channel. Of course, they could have recorded it earlier on that track, but then you would probably hear it on the Mike lead version. And they certainly didn't record it later, because Brian added his double-tracked lead while mixing the song to mono.

Well Jasper maybe he was visiting. Does anyone know what the other BBs were doing around the time of the sessions for this song? If there was any irregularity , that could help explain this better.

None of that would have any bearing on the timing of a punch-in, that could have been done seconds before the mixdown.

It's Carl, no question.
