McCain parodies Beach Boys song, jokes about bombing Iran

By Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Republican presidential contender John McCain, known for having a quirky sense of humor, joked about bombing Iran at a campaign appearance this week.
In response to an audience question about military action against Iran, the Arizona senator briefly sang the chorus of the surf-rocker classic "Barbara Ann."
"That old, eh, that old Beach Boys song, Bomb Iran," he said in jest Wednesday, chuckling with the crowd. Then, he softly sang to the melody: "Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, anyway, ah ..." The audience responded with more laughter.
His quip was prompted by a man in the audience who asked: "How many times do we have to prove that these people are blowing up people now, nevermind if they get a nuclear weapon, when do we send ’em an airmail message to Tehran?"
The campaign stop was in Murrells Inlet, S.C.
After his joke, McCain turned serious and said that he agrees with President Bush that the United States must protect Israel from Iran and work to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. McCain has long said the military option should not be taken off the table but that it should be used only as a last resort.
The episode echoed President Reagan’s 1984 quip at the height of the nuclear arms race when he said: "My fellow Americans, I’m pleased to tell you today that I’ve signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes."
Reagan was testing a microphone before his regular Saturday radio address.

Without getting into the particulars or politics of this situation, I don't think wars in general are a good thing to joke about. Many innocent people die. Sen. McCain should show better judgment.

An unedited tape of the 1980 July 4th concert has the crowd singing it with Al telling them to cut it out.

Officially released in 1980 by New Orleans party band Vince Vance & The Valiants.

What a tosser - making a joke out of the possibility of a new war while we're mired in another. Maybe we should legalise abortion for foetuses McCain's age.  Kiss

John McCain to Join The Beach Boys!
Written by Doug Burrell
Story written: 19 April 2007

After hearing John McCain sing "bomb, bomb, bomb...bomb, bomb Iran" to the tune of the popular Beach Boy's song, "Barbara Ann", at a campaign rally in South Carolina, Mike Love has asked the Presidential candidate to join the band.

According to Love, "We could use some youth in the band to appeal to the younger generation. We might even let him rap a little bit. I understand the kids these days like to 'get jiggy with it.'"

In a separate story, Mike Love has sued John McCain for unauthorized copyright infringement while campaigning in South Carolina.

Received a letter from Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman last week. The letter is about Iran and it appears that the Neocons are ready to go into Iran.

Iran is the world's leading Islamofascist regime. It has committed acts of war against the United States.  It seized the U.S. embassy, imprisoning and torturing diplomatic personnel in violation of international law.    It has sponsored terrorist attacks resulting in the deaths of Americans in Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Iraq.  It has given safe haven to elements of Al Qaeda.  It is has supported AQ and the Taliban in Afghanistan.  The unvarnished anti-Semitism of its leadership is without parallel since Nazi Germany.  It has deliberately murdered Jews in Argentina, and is the principal sponsor of terrorism against Israel.    Now it is violating international agreements to acquire nuclear weapons which would give it the ability to implement its genocidal ideology.

Given the threat Iran poses to democracy and freedom throughout the world, simpletons may comfort themselves by acting in horror that McCain would joke about what may soon be necessary action.   At least he can’t be accused of being a chicken hawk.

It has probably become time to move this convo to the Sandbox.

Unfortunately, when you attempt to dislodge the leader by a bombing campaign, it has, uh, certain repercussions.  See Iraq, for example.  Worse than that, thousands of innocents get hurt or killed. Not something McCain, or anyone positing him or herself as some kind of intellectually and morally superior, should wish for. At the very least, it's really not a matter to be flippant about. If you can't see that, then that is a problem.

Really. Things going well in Iraq, are they?
If the USA does decide to do this (and with the Democrats holding the balance of power in DC I doubt they'll get the chance), I'm afraid to say this time they'll be on their own. We in the UK will not be joining in - I can assure you of that.
