My fiance and I were perusing our favorite used book shop this afternoon, and she pointed out a book to me that I had never seen before. It was "The Beach Boys" by David Leaf, published in 1990 (?) and in mint condition.  I have read about (but never seen) David Leaf's earlier and rare oft quoted book "The Beach Boys and The California Myth"... is this a reprint under a different name?

Also, there was a hand written dedication on the cover page, with a hard to read signature - that looks like it could just be David Leaf's.  Does anyone here know what his signature looks like?

All in all, I only paid $4 for the book - so I wouldn't be too disappointed if it wasn't.  Also, the cute elderly ladies behind the counter put on a best of the Beach Boys comp right before I came up with the book,  and were doing a little dance to "I Get Around". It must have been fate!  Grin

That is indeed the 2nd edition, updated to 1985, and yes, that is a legit signature.

At $4, that's a total steal !

I don't know about the signature, but I do know the book is great!! It's an updated version of his first book the California Myth (didn't get the title right). Be totally happy that you got it and for a steal at that. It probably IS his signature too!!!! Lucky you~~~~!!!!!!

Printed in 78 and 85, too. That's the one I have--85. Mine repeats pages 97-112, and is thus missing 113-128.

Thanks all!  I double-checked the copyright page and it is 1985, I guess it was just signed in 1990.  I haven't had such a cool find in a loooooooong time.

Although last summer I did find this excellent 'lil book for a very reasonable price at a yard sale:

Sadly, there was no signature.  What's up with that?!  Cheesy

Yard sale?! It went for $7.99 brand new! How much did they get for it in the yard sale, 3 pesos and a half-eaten donut? LOL

Mine's signed by Simon Cowell....

Not.

Seriously though, probably my favorite BB book...I'm on my 3rd copy, as the other two fell apart from overuse.

Congrats! That's the edition I have too, and I'm kinda jealous that I didn't pay 4 bucks for it. (I traded it with a BB collector for all ofthe Caribou CDs in '96 back when they were probably worth a bundle each). I also got my copy signed in 2001 before a Brian show in Washington, D.C.

There's a funny story about that picture.  Judging from my reaction, I think Brian was just coming onstage at that point. But that's not the funny part.

'Tis. Does what it says on the label. Innocuous fluff.

I like it too. I'd be more inclined to disagree with your opinions on the Ricky/Blondie material, but...
