I know this would have most definately been covered before but how come the other songs at the Knebworth concert (eg: I Write The Songs, Some of Your Love etc.. aswell as the Happy Birthday to Brian wasn't included on the DVD. (I know the Happy birthday was included on the CD but why wasnt it on the DVD and why wasnt those other songs on the CD or the DVD? Sorry if this has been already covered but could someone fill me in?

Edit: Also just an added question. When was the Beach Boys In Concert album recorded? I know it was recorded over a few concerts. But is there anyway to determine when each individual track was recorded?

I remember the quality was the reason for various songs not making the cut but "Birthday" was omitted due to the royalty required to be paid for the use of the song on film.

Thanks TheOther Anonymous, thats strange about the royalty for the Happy Birthday. Strange that they can afford to put it on the CD and not the DVD. When you say quality I assume you mean the performances themselves weren't up to scratch. Thats a shame as it still would have been nice to see them even if they aren't perfect. Still a very nice concert though.

If you haven't already got it it's worth checking out the unofficial StoneAge Music Knebworth release... the entire  gig is out there is good quality.

It may have been Bruce on the Britain Board at the time of the Knebworth release who said some songs were not, in his opinion, up to standard. I think he is in the credits as a producer or the like of the movie either at the time (1980) or for the release.
He mentioned while the use of the birthday song was inexpensive on CD, in movie form the price goes up. Check out the link below.

Regarding HAPPY BIRTHDAY, when it comes to licensing publishing rights for a CD, the royalty rates are pre-set (it's called a "Compulsory" Mechanical License) and no publisher can charge any more than that for release on a CD or vinyl album or tape cassette.... but when you include music on a video and synchronize the music to picture, that's an entirely different legal situation.  Those are called "Sync" licenses, and the publishers can charge any amount they see fit, and those get REALLY expensive.  If we'd included HAPPY BIRTHDAY on the Knebworth DVD, we probably would have had to drop one of the other songs from the DVD!

Also - the original distributor of the Knewborth project wanted a program that lasted about 70 to 75 minutes at the most, as the initial funding for the reissue of the concert video was from international broadcast distribution, and designed for 90 minute time slots on European television.

Like what I mentioned about it being a shame about Monster Mash on the Lost Concert, it's also a shame about Knebworth being cut. I know some Elvis DVD's had songs cut and fans complained enough until they were re-released. Not that I want to give anyone like Alan any headaches, but again I think these are things that should be released uncut for posterity.

A proper DVD release of Beach Boys footage if marketed correctly would sell. Brian could help fund it, Bruce has more money then he knows what do with. The downside to that is that say Bruce doesn't like a song it won't come out. That is why Soulful Old Man Sunshine didn't come out until after Carl's death. As far as money goes I would have gladly seen the CD of Knebworth scrapped for the complete show on DVD. In other words it could happen if everyone played ball. Not that I don't understand again that funds were limited but they wouldn't be if more of a budget and time was allotted to these projects.

I agree. I don't particularly like "I Write The Songs" - well, not at all, but it would have been nice for a "canonical" Beach Boys version to come out, and also for Bruce to be represented by a lead vocal on the DVD/CD.

Well I have two ultimate questions concerning the knebworth dvd.  Why is so much of Brian edited out of the concert? In other words, how come whole songs go by and not a glimpse of him?  I remember being WAY impressed by the camera shots of Dennis constantly (and his powerful raw drumming style) when I first saw the dvd. California Girls went by....no Brian.   Finally, shot of him at the beginning of Sloop. Then, we continue the pattern. No Brian hardly at all. So this is to  Mr. Boyd or whoever has seen the whole unedited concert/camera angles etc...Why is this so?  what was Brian doing say, during Deuce Coupe? Or Be True to Your School? I think Brian looked totally cool (unshaven) at this point in '80.  If they recut the thing with more shots of Brian, I would buy it again in a heartbeat.

Also, Fact or Fiction: the DON'T PANIC sign was put up for Brian?

Thanks

As it turned out, the folks who shot that concert (we had an original "line cut" and some isolated camera reels to work with) just didn't focus on Brian very much.... he really wasn't doing all that much onstage besides playing rhythm piano and singing a bit here and there.  The main iso cameraman seemed to be much more interested in Dennis!

Complete, utter, and total FICTION -- the "Don't Panic" sign is a reference to *The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy,* a very popular science fiction TV show in the UK at the time. It has nothing whatsoever to do with Brian Wilson or the other BBs.
