The triumph of The Hickey Script !

Sorry to disagree with you Rob Mac but Parks wasn't really shown to be doing anything bad.

Been some time since I've seen the movie, but, and I stand to be corrected here, wasn't the Van Dyke/Samuel character the one who introduced Brian to drugs ? (I do recall that they had him saying stuff in 1965/6 that he actually said ten years later ).

Alan Boyd had to write something to put in there.

No, it was Gary Griffin who wrote "Geronimo Leaps..." - Alan just provided the phrase entirely off the cuff. He was horrified to see it turn up in the movie.

Mike didn't write the movie.

No, he didn't actually pen the script, but he sure as hell had a huge input into the way the project turned out.

Yes Mike did take part and part two was very bad. Love trying to calm Dennis was funny especally. To be fair it did do Mike's breakdown too which I bet he wasn't thrilled about. My point is Mike didn't have final say over how the film was edited, and he didn't put the words into characters mouths.

Good catch about the Van Dyke quote being from 1976, but it fit the scene. Again I thought he was the only one in part two really true to life. I know he was at the drug parites but I don't think he was shown doing them. Which is how he said it happened.

so when Regan & Saraceno were brainstorming to come up with any beach-related name that wasn't 'The Surfers'

There was a Dutch band called The Surfers in the late 70s. They had a Dutch hit with a Beach Boys rip off song called Wind Surfin'.

And of course, lots of people think it is a Beach Boys song. File under Beach Baby, Little GTO and Surf City.

I have that very 45 - it's rather good.  Smiley

"Mostly" in this case meaning he didn't do anything except smoke weed and do speed daily.

Mike's so clever that he inserted those wife-beating anecdotes into the script, so that we would be scratching our heads for years debating if he was the mastermind behind the movie or not.

Ok, ok, I know that the movie has scenes that are tipical 'Positivity Mike saves the day'. Though when Mike tells the story himself it's not nearly as cheezy as in the movie.

The scene where VDP/Samuel is introduced, "Tommy Shaffer" says of VDP/Samuel (in a Beavis and Butthead-type voice), "even when I'm stoned I can't understand him!"

And MBE, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, I don't think Van was over the line.  The depiction clearly was hurtful to him and I don't think anyone should say "on come on, Van, it wasn't THAT bad. "

Hey I respect youir view, but I think the actor got his speach patterns down pretty well. If Van Dyke was hurt I do understand, but he doesn't come off as a pusher or anything. Again agreeing to disagree is probably the best idea. I am just sharing my personal take on the whole mess and hope I didn't offend you.
