Felt this deserved its own thread.  In addition to what was just announced.

Ahhh that's great news. I don't listen to this one often, but aside from TWGMTR I think this is one of their strongest albums post Love You...Which granted, that's not hard to do. But I really think this is a solid album - the production and vocals are top notch. Carl as usual sounds like an angel. I think it just needed one more incredibly solid single and this album would've been better remembered.

It's weird that the video tag says it was posted 7 MONTHS AGO!  Why are we just hearing about this now?  (Or did I miss a thread?)  But even more weird, why didn't it come out last year DURING its anniversary year, as Steve Levine said it was planned to be?!

In this video, Maevey and I discuss the amazing life of Beach Boys star, Brian Wilson.

I was so lucky to have been asked to produce  the 1985 album titled 'The Beach Boys'  and spent an utterly unforgettable time with them in the studio creating this album.

Here are some of my memories of that time as I share my deep thanks to this amazing man. His legacy lives on.

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Wonderful!

The '85 album has always been a favorite of mine. I never got why so many people dislike it.

Nice!  And that was posted on January 23, 2026, just 6 days ago.  So apparently the project is still a go.  Now the question is how and when will we get it?  Will it be a stand-alone release, or will it be paired with another album in a boxed set?  And will it come out this year, or next?  Or even later?

Hey Bedroom, any chance you could give a quick summary of what Steve says in this podcast?  I don't want to listen to the whole hour if it's not worth it.  Thanks!

Hope you don't mind if I chime in. Steve talks mostly about his work, meaning the production and the work with the synths but also how the Boys (especially Brian and Carl) felt about the possibilitites this new technology offered. If you're into that kind of stuff you should check this out. As seen in other videos, Levine seems like a really nice guy who is very fond of his work with the Beach Boys.

Thanks, I hope I have time to listen to it.  So... he didn't give any concrete info about when the album would be released, I assume?

No, that wasn't even discussed iirc.

They dislike it because it's an 80's pop album, and Brian has a muted presence on it.

I'm starting to think this project won't be released. It's those cheesy 80's Beach Boys.

That would be a shame. I can understand though that they won't bring it out at the same time as "We gotta groove". Maybe in a couple of months...? The anniversary was last year anyway.

Yeah, they messed up not releasing it last year. It's just not an album that's popular with fans who treasure the quirky, weird Brian. Love You gives them LOTS of quirky, strange Brian.

I'm guessing there are just multiple other projects ("We Gotta Groove", a Pet Sounds 60th release that they've already started teasing on the e-mail mailing list) that are in the way of Levine's '85 remix. Levine appears to have taken the project on with no knowledge and/or awareness of the ongoing archival program going on with the BBs catalog (where an '85 remix would fit in a few sets down the road), so they'd have to figure out a way to integrate it into the larger plans with the band/brand.

I'd rather the current archival team deal with the '85 album, as I think we kind of need outtakes and vocals-only mixes and things like that more than a stereo remix. I'd rather see an MIU/LA/KTSA boxed set (physical and/or digital), and then a boxed set after that covering the 80s, which could include an '85 album remix (either Levine's or just let James Saez do his thing), and they could then integrate a lot more outtakes/bonus tracks.

The logical thing to do next is MIU etc, but this is the Beach Boys we're talking about. If it was up to me, I would put BB85 in a set also including Rock 'N' Roll to the Rescue, California Dreaming, and other mid 80's recordings.
I wonder what they will call an MIU set? Hey Little Tomboy? Here Comes the Night?
