'Your daddy knows a little hide away'
'Gotta get crankin' now'
'How can we get things crankin'?'
'The women who live on the farm they reflect his charm'
'Majesty moves through me majestically'
'Don't tell me you are a Cancer'
'...let em know it's totally rad!'
'Be bop munumunuhhhh'

And come on. Love you?
Don't even get me started. Again, I think some fans are WAY too forgiving with the
childlike
childish lyrics because of Brian's state at the time. But like it or not, it wasn't private therapeutic writing assignments. It was a major label release by a MAJOR recording act. I got it early in my foray into Beach Boys fandom (Endless Summer > Spirit Of America > In Concert > Good Vibration/Great Concert! > Love You) and it put me off the band for YEARS and it wasn't because of the voices!
In hindsight I wouldn't be surprised if the band KNEW it was crap and allowed Brian the therapeutic indulgence since they knew they were done with Reprise.
(I know it's bad business sense to release something you know is bad but this band ain't exactly known for always making the best decisions.
)
Mike and Al (despite their apparent change of heart since) did indeed give Brian grief for it at the time.

"If Mars had life on it
I might find my wife on it"
Dylan would have been proud to have written this.
This doesn't belong under a "worst lyrics" thread tho' – it's genius. Would the chances of Mars supporting life have increased Brian's chances of just happening to bump into Marilyn there? I like to think so…

A couple come to mind:
My Diane
California Feelin'
Waves Of Love
I love My Diane lyrics! GAHHH!
California Feelin' has alright lyrics in parts, the grapefruit tree line is of course pretty weak.

I remember some friends shaking their heads in disbelief (and not in a good way) when they heard that one. It's a shocker.

"The private life of Bill and Sue
Can you dig what I'm tellin' you?"
And the rest of the song doesn't get any better.
Second: All of "Summer of Love".
Third:
"Waving from the ocean liners
beaded cheering indians behind them
Once upon the Sandwich Isles
the social structure steamed upon Hawaii
Having returned to the East or West Indies
we always got them confused"
Fourth: Love You album

Songs which the lyrics are so bad it kinda destroyed songs that are great musically, such as Match Point, Make It Big, etc.
Then there's songs with lyrics and music that completely suck, such as Kona Coast, Summer Of Love, Sumahama, etc.

But Don't Hurt My Little Sister is such an essential piece of the anxious, ambivalent song cycle that is The Beach Boys Today! Good to my Baby is so defensive it's almost painful, and then Don't Hurt My Little Sister drives home the point, setting us up for the "holy sh*t I'm a bad boyfriend" masterpiece that is She Knows Me Too Well, just as When I Grow Up sets us up for the anxiety over adult relationships that crystalizes in Please Let Me Wonder and Back of My Mind. Lyrically, the song that doesn't work with the whole (setting aside the two dance singles which are more obviously doing their own thing) is Rhonda.
