So I'm verrrry sloooowly making my way through the new 2024 book "The Beach Boys by The Beach Boys."

And I came across lyrics for a "fast version" of Surfer Girl on page 83.  The lyrics are completely different, and they obviously don't fit with the original melody.  But I notice some lines in the chorus are "Take it or leave it, but you better believe it" -- and of course the song "Surfer's Rule" pops into my mind -- and the new verse lyrics fit in perfectly with that tune!  So it appears "Surfer's Rule" started life out as a "fast version" of "Surfer Girl!"

And then(!), if you look closely at those pages you can see the bleed through of lyrics for other songs!  I'm an old man... so is anyone here good at taking a picture of those and mirror-imaging them so that we can try to read what the lyrics hidden on the back sides of those pages are?

And to make it even more intriguing the second page seems to have bleed through of two different sets of lyrics!  One set is in black and the other is in red!

AND... I think I can make out the last two lines of the lyric in red...

No big thing
Ain't no big thing

-----------

I'm also seeing the title "Good Humor Man" written three times on Brian's notes.  I've always loved that title and have wished I could hear that song!  Has it ever been documented that it was turned into another song?  I really wish I could at least see the lyrics!  Maybe they're in the notebook?

To add to the mystery, the first time "Good Humor" pops up in the book, on page 78, it looks like this...

                  Good Humor
                  Instrumental
accordian    (vocal)

So I can't figure out if "Instrumental" is another separate song or if it is describing "Good Humor?"  And because of what's written under that I'm guessing the "Instrumental" has an accordian playing the melody line?

In truth, I'd really rather have a printed copy of Brian's notebook(s) as opposed to this big tome -- even as enjoyable as it's been to read and look at so far.  Unfortunately it keeps giving us more questions that need to be answered!

Like, what is in the tape box with "Rehearsal, The Beach Boys, Hawthorne" written on it.  At first I thought maybe it was a song called "Hawthorne", but now I'm guessing it's a recording of them rehearsing songs somewhere in Hawthorne.

And what about this unknown title listed in Brian's handwritten notes for album contents on page 80...

"Fast song with high voice -- Gimmick Instrumental Break?"

And then there are "Pray for Surf" and "Rabbit's Foot" -- the former which was later a Honey's song, and the latter which was turned into another song (which I forget at the moment) and of which there is a partial chorus vocal surviving.  How far along were they in being Beach Boys songs?  Did they have finished vocals that were later wiped?

Anyway...  PLEASE, WHOEVER'S IN CHARGE -- LET US BUY A COPY OF BRIAN'S NOTEBOOK(S)!!!

Love and merci,
Dan Lega
